"...and the sails were drawn up, and the wind blew, and slowly the ship slipped away down the long grey firth; and the light of the glass of Galadriel that Frodo bore glimmered and was lost. And the ship went out into the High Sea and passed on into the West, until at last on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise."
Return of the King - "The Grey Havens," J.R.R Tolkien
Built by the Elves of Lindon at the beginning of the Second Age by the surviving Elves of Beleriand -those who chose to remain on Middle-earth after the wars against Morgoth- , Mithlond (from Sindarin mith "white fog" + lond "narrow strait, entrance to harbor; land-locked haven") or the Grey Havens, a.k.a. the Elven ports, is a haven (seaport) on the Gulf of Lune in the northwest of Middle-earth, ruled by Círdan the Shipwright, where Gildor and Galdor dwell also. The Grey Havens was part of Lindon, the kingdom directly ruled by Gil-galad, last High King of the Noldor in Middle-earth; however, now it is used by the Elves to leave Middle-earth for Valinor.
Currently, and according to the maps, Mithlond's anchorage is divided into the Harlond (the "south-haven") and the Forlond ("north-haven") which occupy the southern and northern banks, respectively, of the River Lune. Even after the death of Gil-galad, the place has remained a focal point of the history in the northern part of Middle-earth.
The folk living here are a remnant of those that followed the banner of High King Gil-galad and the standard of Lord Círdan. He remains the lord of the walled city and claims the head seat of the governing body, the Shipwright's Guild. The main province of the Havens is in sailing and the building of the sturdy ships and vessels of the Eldar. From Mithlond is where all Elves weary of the world cast off in ships and make sail for Valinor, the Undying Lands. On the west coast of Elendor about the head of the Gulf of Lhun, Mithlond is the least harassed of the Elven cultures.
Mithlond is a restricted culture that consists of experienced players who have a deep knowledge of Elven history and a thorough understanding of role played by elves in Elendor. If you are interested in joining the Mithlondhrim, please contact one of the Mithlond admins for an application.
