Description:
[Azradi(#20135)]
The council room of Farside is cast largely in shadows. One oil lamp burns near the entrance to the room and another sits on the long table. It casts its bright light on a scattered pile of charts, haphazardly strewn across the polished surface. The Fleet Master of the tower, Azradi anAzulada, stands leaning over the table, studing one of the unfurled maps. She holds down the nearest ends while the furthest are weighed down with a brass instrument and glass of wine.

The flickering light sends shadows dancing upon her thoughtful features.

Hesitant at the room's threshold, Alimah knocks quietly at the doorway. "Captain?" she asks. "Are you busy?"

[Azradi(#20135)]
Azradi lifts her head and grins. "In comparison to a few weeks ago? No."

"But my brother has given me new duties and orders. It occupies my mind."

"But I can spare a minute or three," the Corsair Captain says. She pulls her hand away from the map, allowing it to roll up. "What is on your mind?"

"It is...about duties..." Alimah hesitates, then steps into the room. "It is about duties, in fact, though. I am afraid that..." She pauses again. "I am afraid that my duties or perhaps it is my heart have taken me from the Farside Tower."

[Azradi(#20135)]
"I see," Azradi says, an edge creeping into her voice. Her earlier good humor evaporates into a frown. "And where has your heart gone to?"

"It must be your heart, because your duties are here in Farside as you chose and as you /swore/."

"Yes, Captain, of course. But...I am compelled to do so, despite my oath, and it is not done with trickery or deceit. Only because it is something that I deeply and truly feel," Alimah says. "The Black Tower."

[Azradi(#20135)]
A small fire flickers deep in Azradi's grey eyes, a spark at most. "You hedged with us demanded the best deal you could refused to commit until in the end you hoped to find in us a sanctuary from your father."

"And now you want to leave because your 'heart' is drawn to another tower?" Her mouth twists into a smirk. "And what did they offer you? What position, what coin has made your heart flutter so like a maiden's?"

"It is a matter of a calling," Alimah answers, not flinching at the Captain's words or manner. "I had not felt it until now but I know it to be true. I will be a mere assistant. Nothing more. No great power or rewards."

[Azradi(#20135)]
"You will do nothing of the sort!" shouts Azradi, the spark flaring to a conflagration. "You will remain a Corsair of Farside as you are sworn!"

"Alphros is right Umbar has fallen too far under the Emperor. The people have forgotten the old traditions."

"You have no right to even /ask/ to leave let alone do so. I will not release you from your oath." The Farside lady waves her hand dismissively, "Return to your duties."

For several long seconds, Alimah just stares at the Captain.

"You may not release me from my oath. But your brother will. Your brother is the Farside Lord and it is he that I serve. I was just giving you the courtesy of informing you first."

[Azradi(#20135)]
"But I hold your oath," Azradi replies, smiling coldly. "You swore to /me/ that you would serve him faithfully. It is my duty to enforce it. He cannot release you from an oath sworn to me."

"But speak to him tell him how feckless and faithless you are. If he wishes, he can ask me to release you."

"But mind you, until then you are of Farside. Be wary with your actions lest you give reason to be named a traitor."

"I am not a traitor. I came here to you open and honorably and asked to be released from my oath," Alimah hisses. "If you do not release me--then I still serve you and your brother, and fully so.

"I am no traitor," she repeats, louder now. "I will not go beg to your brother and ask him to have you release me. This is your oath to hold me to or not. If this is how you treat those sworn to you, so be it. Your policies speak for themselves." She turns, as if intending to leave, but waits for the Captain to answer.

[Azradi(#20135)]
"Am I treating you badly?" Azradi laughs, "I'm so terribly sorry. Did I hurt your feelings? Please forgive me."

"You do not understand how things work, evidently. You do not shop for Tower Lords and then turn them in for news ones like an overworked field donkey."

"These are not my policies," the Corsair lady says, her voice hardening with anger once more. "This has been the tradition for millennia. When you swear service to a Tower, you are sworn. You are not free to come and go as you please."

"I will not release you unless my brother asks me to. Whether you speak to him or not is your own concern. But you would have needed his permission to leave even if I had been willing to release you."

"Oh, I understand perfectly well. Captain. Is that all? Am I dismissed? And what duties will you assign me to this day?" Alimah stares blankly toward the woman.

[Azradi(#20135)]
"I did have a task in mind for you," Azradi replies, frowning ever more. "But frankly, I do not trust you at the moment to fulfill it. You have already confessed your heart is not in it."

"So instead, do as you normally do. Be ready to sail when we have need of you - keep your fighting skills honed."

"You are dismissed."
