Dwarves to see Thranduil
Gimli and co are off to visit Thranduil in Mirkwood.
Sort Date: no date set
Location: Mirkwood
Description: The cold November air clings to everything in the forest of Mirkwood, adding an unpleasant chill to the already hostile environment of the dangerous woods. There are some places that are a refuge from the dangers, though, depending on whether one holds to past grudges or not. It seems that a small group of dwarves it willing to try their luck with the elves that make their home here, for a trip of the stout folk are approaching the dwelling of Thranduil and his kin.
They move steadily along the path, heavily armed with grim expressions on their bearded faces. Leading the group is a khazad with a thick yellow beard that bushes out from beneath a steel helm that matches the splintmail armor that he wears under a thick traveling cloak. Strapped across his back is a vicious double-bladed axe.
[Gimli(#30149)] Behind the yellow-bearded dwarf comes another, this one with a beard of brown, yet also attired for the dangers of Mirkwood: a dwarven mail adorns his torso, and a bright helm of steel covers his head and while he wears no shield, a great battle axe is also strapped on his back. "Well, it seems we have made it to Thranduil's abode, after all lads", the brown-bearded dwarf says to the two others, as he stops.
[Celevrabe(#27319)] The arrival of the dwarves does not go unheard by the keen ears of Amon Thranduil's residents. A pair of eyes watch the group from nearby, hidden behind a tree.
Celevrabe steps backwards, feet causing little, if any, sound to pass through the air at the disturbance. He swiftly moves amongst the trees and gazes out again, pleased to see he is now a little bit ahead of the group. His curiosity is high, but he remains silent as he continues watching the group, wondering why they are here.
"Aye, but I don't be feelin' any safer fer bein' here." Nali grumbles, looking around at the trees suspiciously with his brows drawn together. "They be coming to meet or us, or do we be needin' to go in deeper, Lord Gimli?" The yellow-bearded dwarf begins to reach back for his axe, but stops and aborts the action halfway in the process, his hand dropping to his side again.
[Gimli(#30149)] "I think we should be close enough to the gates of Thranduil's abode... that's what the Elf we met further east told me", Gimli replies to Nali, as he scans the woods about them with his dark eyes. "Well... lets see then", he adds, as he puts his hands on the sides of his mouth. "Hail! We seek Thranduil, the Elvenking... we come from Erebor with a message from dain!", he bellows to any who would hear.
[Celevrabe(#27319)] The watching elf's hands immediately reach for the spear on his back as he sees one of the dwarves reach for his axe, eyes narrowing. He relaxes as he sees the dwarf stop, but still watches suspiciously. He continues moving ahead with each second, both he and the dwarves closing in on the gate. He wants to reach it before them, in case they came with hostility, so he can warn the guards. However, he sees the dwarves stop.
Celevrabe pauses as he hears the message, waiting a while before striding out from his refuge amongst the trees, coming to a stop in front of the group, though does not make a word, waiting for the group in front to make the first move.
Nali chuckles at his leader's eloquent method for seeking attention. He looks around slowly, bushy blond brows still drawn but there's little anger on the khazad's face. When the elf steps out his gaze snaps over to the tall figure, his stance growing more guarded.
Silence deepens as neither party says anything for a long moment, then Nali rolls his eyes and relaxes a bit as he speaks in exasperation. "You be hearing my captain? We're here to be speakin' to yer king."
Celevrabe examines the dwarf group for a while, a sight unusual to his eyes. He glances to the dwarf that spoke to him, and responds, "I heard him well enough, master dwarf, a shout like his was sure to rouse all ears in this forest." A mischievous smile flickered upon his ageless face, before fading once more.
He lapsed into silence again, perhaps testing how patient these creatures were, eyes darting from one to another. He finally says, "And how can we trust you, for you surely can not expect us to let you straight into my King's land, do you?" He remains standing perfectly still, eyes fixed on the dwarf who had spoken, almost in a teasing manner.
[Gimli(#30149)] "Well met", the brown-bearded dwarf says, as he advances a couple of paces. "I am Gimli, son of Gloin, and I come as envoy of Dain, son of Nain, King under the Mountain", he says, as he bows, the tip of his beard touching the grassy floor. "We have met with master Ingildur, who guided us here and moreover, we come as friends to your people, master Elf", he adds, after straightening and look up to the Elf's eyes.
Nali bows as Gimli does, introducing himself. "Nali, son of Rali." The third dwarf follows suit. Nali smoothes his yellow beard back into place and looks around again in a critical fashion, a surly expression on his hairy face.
Celevrabe glances next to the lead dwarf, eyes studying him curiously, and responds graciously, "And well met to you too, sir." He nods his head slightly to the dwarf. At the name 'Ingildur', Celevrabe's eyes widened with recognition, "You know the Feredir?" He asks, aware that he just used a term that may not be familiar with them.
He glances to the other dwarf, "Well met to you too, master dwarf." He then realizes, "And you may call me Celevrabe..." He frowns, before saying, "Well then.. Follow me to the gate.."
[Gimli(#30149)] "Aye, we have met him, while he guarded the eastern borders of this realm", Gimli replies, nodding. "He was the one who told us how to come here, and greeted us to Thranduil's realm", he adds. As the Elf introduces himself, Gimli nods once more. "Well met then, master Celebrave. We'll appreciate if you can show us to the gates of Thranduil's abode, for we have travelled for many days now, and we're weary".
Nali shifts the heavy pack that he's carrying on his back and rubs his hands together. "This be more like it. Finally be gettin' somewhere." He mutters in a quiet rumble, his armor creaking and scraping as he moves. Dwarves are not known for their subtlety.
Celevrabe listens to the dwarf leader's words, and nods, "I see.." He turns away from them and strides forward once more in the direction of the gate, "Keep us, dwarves, if you can." This is followed by a musical laugh as he continues forward.
[Gimli(#30149)] "Lead on, then", says Gimli, as he shoulders his own pack and motions for the other two to follow.
Nali watches the elf skip ahead and grumbles something under his breath at the taunt. "Elves and their teasing.. makes me wonder why we even bother comin' out here. Waste of time, I say." He stumps along in a grouchy fashion, his eyes jetting over their surroundings frequently.
[Celevrabe(#27319)] "Of course, master dwarf!" He calls back as he continues. He grins, "And elves are born to tease, as well as with excellent hearing." He smirks slightly as he approaches the river, where a fallen tree is currently lying across. He turns back to face them.
"How about it? Want to swim or test your balance on this log?" He then climbs onto the log with ease and waits in the middle for their decision, arms folded.
[Gimli(#30149)] "Elves may nimble, yet dwarves can certainly cross this bridge, if you can call this log so", Gimli replies, as he approaches the edge of the fallen log. "We do prefer to build proper bridges of stone, which can stand for many years without crumbling... but we can also cross this one, if need be", he adds.
Nali stops when they reach the water, smirking at the sight of the log. "Aye. A bridge be no trouble, even one that be made of wood. Though maybe we should be wading across to wash the dirt of the road away, lest we offend delicate elven noses with the smells of the road." He gives Gimli a sidelong look, watching his captain approach the log.
Celevrabe gracefully gets to the other side with another two strides, and turns back to watch, "Ah. But surely a bridge like yours has a grip that will stop you slipping in the frost of a November morning?" He grins, "Trust me, sirs, I expect you'll find it more difficult than you think."
[Gimli(#30149)] Gimli huffs then, and after casting a sidelong glance at Nali first, and at his other companion afterwards, puts a foot on the log. He adjusts his backpack then, making sure there's an even distribution of the weight, and then begins to cross. Surely, he's not as graceful as the Elf, yet his footing is sure as he begions the crossing.
The sun rises over the forest turning the dewdrops into pearls of light.
"If this be the courtesy of the elves, I do hope your king will be accepting the offer we be bringing so we can be repaying you later." Nali says with a wicked grin on his face. He moves to stand at the end of the log, watching Gimli make his crossing, waiting. No need to make it more difficult with two dwarves trying to pass at the same time.
Celevrabe grins before whistling softly, and suddenly, there's a disturbance from a branch above the log, and numerous drops of freezing cold water fall down towards the dwarves. There is another noise, before a second elf drops down beside Celevrabe, the two of them looking at the dwarves to watch the result of what just happened. Celevrabe has a smile upon his face, a triumphant type of smirk. That is, if the water hits the dwarvs
[Gimli(#30149)] Ungraceful perhaps, but Gimli corsses the log, and stands defiantly on the other side. "Well, that was easy", he says, as he looks to nali. "Come on cousin!", he calls, waving encouraginlgly to the otehr dwarf to cross.
Nali shows the first sign of trepidation, his earlier grousing absent as he climbs up onto the log with an expression of concentration. He considers the river, then scowls and slowly inches his way along. Halfway across, the second elf drops down out of the tree and Nali looks up sharply, reaching back for his axe immediately.
It's at the same moment that he recognizes the new arrival as another elf that he remembers he's not on a log. He throws his arms out wide with a sudden, "Whoa!" but manages to recover with a shaky sigh of relief, then finishes the crossing without further incident. The blond dwarf scowls up at the elves, "Can't be bothered to build a proper bridge." He grumbles.
[Celevrabe(#27319)] The two elves watch with a dissappointed expression as Gimli makes it safley across the bridge, and Celevrabe mutters, "You spoil our fun.." The two then turn to watch Nali, and wide smiles cross their faces as the second almost falls.
The second elf smiles and lends a hand to help the dwarf down.
"May I introduce you both to-" The second elf interrupts with, "My name is not important. Now come, friends, our home is near!"
Celevrabe grins, "We have a proper bridge, friends, but why waste what nature is given us, which is a very fine bridge made of wood!"
[Gimli(#30149)] "Indeed", Gimli comments tersely, as the third dwarf, Lorni, starts to cross. Lorni almost lips once... twice... thrice... and then he's over the log, on the other side of the river. "That was close", Lorni, a raven-bearded dwarf comments with a gruff voice, as he adjusts the pack on his back. "Let us go to your home then, Master Elf... I think we've had enough fun for a day", Gimli adds, as Lorni grunts his approval.
Nali nods his agreement, looking thoroughly irritated by the entire affair. "Yes. Let's be on." He casts long gazes at both of the elves, crossing his arms as he waits for them to begin moving again. "Has a proper bridge and they be makin' us scurry along a log like chipmunks." The grumbling begins anew.
[Celevrabe(#27319)] "Oh, but your message seemed of great importance, master dwarf!" Liefa ((Second elf)) replied in a fake disappointed voice, "We'd have rather taken a shortcut!" Celevrabe nodded in agreement, and added, "Though shortcuts tend to make delays, but there is no harm in that. Oh, and chipmunks tend not to slip!"
He then turned to Gimli, "Enough fun already? No, no! You must join us tonight for the feast and then surely for some social time afterwards!" He insisted, and Liefa added, "Yes, drunken dwarves always entertain me."
[Gimli(#30149)] "A feast? perhaps we shall join... yet, we've been travelling for some time now, and Mirkwood's not a very welcoming place to travel through... so i think you'd understand our weariness", Gimli replies. "But we'd appreciate your guidance to Thranduil's palace, where perhaps he'll grant us leave to rest for a bit before appearing in his court".
Nali drops his hands to his side, clenching them into fists and he growls under his breath. Obviously the yellow-bearded dwarf has less patience than his captain. "Do you be treatin' all visitors to yer home this way?" He asks in a demanding voice, then sighs in disgust. "Fine, a feast! Let us be on."
Celevrabe replies, "Yes, yes! Of course!" and Liefa adds, "And we're guiding you there now! No more surprises, a promise. Well, unless our king has anything in store for you." Celevrabe then also adds, "But that all depends on the manner of your message."
"Ahh, the dwarf is upset!" Liefa exclaims as he glances at Nali, head tilted, "Now what do you mean? Treating them with a feast and fun?" Celevrabe then adds, "Or almost having a rather... cold bath?"
[Gimli(#30149)] "Lead on, then, and we shall follow", Gimli replies, as he starts to move towards Celevrabe and Liefa.
They move steadily along the path, heavily armed with grim expressions on their bearded faces. Leading the group is a khazad with a thick yellow beard that bushes out from beneath a steel helm that matches the splintmail armor that he wears under a thick traveling cloak.
