Description: [Warven(#26511)]
It is just past supper time under the Lonely Mountain, the Hall of Dodin is nearly dead no sparing or training going about on this day. In the middle of the Hall is the Barazin Stonewright Warven, he is dressed in his Red shirt and Black trousers with ringmail over it, upon his head a metal helm. Slowly and methodically this dwarf goes through a mock battle with an unseen opponent, swinging his great War Hammer over and over again, thrusting it forward and blocking unseen attacks.

When Ranol has nothing better to do with his time he works on his personal training. As it happens, this evening he has nothing better to do.. or at least that he -wants- to do. He wanders into the hall and after a glance around starts walking towards the only dwarf he really knows, Warven. The huskarl watches the stonewright quietly, studying the forms and techniques that the Barazin uses.

[Warven(#26511)]
Not seeing the Huskarl approach and watch his movements the Stonewright continues his spar with the invisible opponent, going through the motions of attack and defense. Spinning around in a blocking move he spots the Huskarl and lowers his War Hammer to the floor whilst he stands. Smiling he says "Perhaps you would make a better opponent Ranol, care for a match?"

"Certainly, Master Warven." The huskarl says with a grin on his face. "The sword or the hammer?" He asks, reaching to pull his cloak and extra gear off to set on the floor in a pile.

[Warven(#26511)]
With a smile the Stonewright moves over to his own things to begin padding he head of his War Hammer, looking over his shoulder he says "Surprise me, whichever you prefer really" Rummaging through his pack he finds the thick padding and begins to tightly secure it to his War Hammer.

Ranol considers for a moment, then draws his broadsword. He unwinds the long length of cloth he keeps on his sword sheath and ties it around the blade carefully, then hefts up his shield. "How is your evening going, cousin?" He asks as he moves to a clearer area on the floor, making a few practice swings through the air.

[Warven(#26511)]
Finally the Stonewright is finished tying the padding upon his War Hammer, turning about and making his way towards the Huskarl he takes a few more practice swings and says "It has been a good day cousin, the mines are coming along very well and the new chamber is supplying so much iron and silver it hard to keep track. How have you been?"

"Much the same, which is well enough." Ranol says with a grin. He falls into a defensive stance and holds his sword out to the side. "Ready when you are.."

[Warven(#26511)]
With a nod the Stonewight gets into his own fighting stance holding his War Hammer in font of him and says "Ready". Quickly he moves forward and swings his War Hammer sideways aimed for the Huskarls ribs.

Warven attacks you with his War Hammer!...
...and he misses!

Ranol steps back, the hammer barely flying clear of his torso. Immediately the huskarl moves in close, swinging the flat of the blade at Warven's chest in retaliation, keeping his shield wide to give him more manueveribility.

Your attack against Warven mildly wounds him!

[Warven(#26511)]
Seeing his attack go wide Warven tries to bring his shied up to block the retaliation but to no avail, feeling the Huskarl's sword strike his chest and the sound of ringmail. Quickly he jumps back and once again is the offensice, thrusting his War Hammer forward at Ranols mid section.

Warven attacks you with his War Hammer!...
...and he misses!

Ranol quickly steps to the side, twisting as he moves and trying to keep himself in close range to the stonewright. The hammer misses again and the Bundazanul whips the sword around in a fast slash at Warven once more.

Warven parries your attack with his War Hammer!

[Warven(#26511)]
Seeing his attack dodged and Ranol moving in the Stonewright spins to the side parrying the attack with the head of his War Hammer, continuing the spin he builds momentum and swings his War Hammer once more in a sideways swing aimed low this time towards Ranol's hip.

Warven attacks you with his War Hammer!...
...and he hits! Ouch!

Ranol is at the completely wrong angle to block the attack when Warven spins so quickly with the counter-attack, and the hammer slams into his hip. His chainmail rings and the huskarl staggers a step, giving up ground. He looks surprised, but he's grinning, and soon enough the guard springs in to slash at his opponent again.

Warven dodges your attack.

[Warven(#26511)]
Quickly as he can the Stonewright back peddles just enough, feeling the Huskarls sword just hit his beard and brush it to the side, then jumping forward with his War Hammer leading he thrusts it towards Ranols mid-section

Warven attacks you with his War Hammer!...
...and he misses!

Ranol is ducking away low and to the side when Warven attacks, and his hammer punches the air alongside the khazad's shoulder. The huskarl sweeps his blade at the Barazin's legs, trying to trip him to the ground.

Warven dodges your attack.

[Warven(#26511)]
Seeing the attack going low the Stonewright jumps just in time and just high enough, the landing is rough and he goes down to one knee, quickly swinging his War Hammer in an upwards motions whilst he stands

Warven attacks you with his War Hammer!...
...and you parry his attack with your Short Broadsword!

Ranol barely gets his blade across in time to catch the hammer and push it away. It leaves him a bit over-extended in his reach, but he tries to slap the flat of the blade at Warven again anyway, pushing the offensive.

Your attack against Warven mildly wounds him!

[Warven(#26511)]
Once again the Stonewright feels Ranol's blade strike him, this time across the shoulder. Jumping back he gathers his senses for a moment and begins the offensive once more, moving forward and sidestepping at the last second as he swings his War Hammer in a downwards attack aimed for Ranols sword wielding shoulder.

Warven attacks you with his War Hammer!...
...and he hits! Ouch!

Ranol is moving in for another fast attack, but Warven is swinging the hammer down and it slams into his shoulder. The huskarl winces and backs off, rolling his shoulder a few times. He holds his shield in front of him now, favoring his swordarm as he waits for the numbness to pass from the powerful strike.

[Warven(#26511)]
Looking Ranol over for a moment to make sure he is not truly injured the Stonewright holds, seeing him raise his shield it is apparent the Huskarl wishes to continues, and with a sudden lunge forwards Warven obliges, swinging his War Hammer low and angled down at Ranols hip once again.

Warven attacks you with his War Hammer!...
...and he misses!

Ranol watches Warven closely, his eyes following the movements of the stonewright carefully. When the next attack comes the huskarl doesn't move until the last moment, and then he's stepping smoothly to the side. In one fluid motion he drops his shield to the floor with a clang and grips the broadsword in two hands, slashing at Warven's side again with the flat of the blade.

Warven dodges your attack.

[Warven(#26511)]
Lunging to the side into a roll in the nick of time, feeling the wind of Ranols attack on his beard Warven jumps to his feet and spins back around and steps forwards back into attack range and swings his War Hammer in a downward motion aimed at Ranols other shoulder.

Warven attacks you with his War Hammer!...
...and you parry his attack with your Short Broadsword!

Ranol is already persuing Warven as he's climbing to his feet again, and brings the broadsword up to deflect the attacking hammer, pushing it harmlessly away to the side. He reverses his stroke with the blade and tries to get an attack inside of Warven's reach, aiming for his side.

Warven parries your attack with his shield!

[Warven(#26511)]
Raising his shield jus time hearing the metallic "clang" as sword and shield meet, quickly Warven reverses the swing of his War Hammer and brings it back towards Ranol, aimed at his mid-section

Warven attacks you with his War Hammer!...
...and he hits! Ouch!

Ranol is breathing heavily, the spar proving more rigorous than the usual training. The huskarl takes the attack from the hammer, stepping to the side to get away from Warven's immediate range. He swings in low this time, trying to get under the Barazin's defense.

Warven parries your attack with his shield!

[Warven(#26511)]
Lowing his shield just in time the metallic "clang" is heard once more, breathing heavily the Stonewright swings his War hammer in a downwards motion once again, Aimed directly at the Huskarls shoulder, the other shoulder

Warven attacks you with his War Hammer!...
...and he hits! Ouch!

Ranol takes another blow and backs off now, grinning. "I think I'm done.. " The huskarl says, lowering the sword and reaching his hand up to rub his shoulder which is beginning to throb. "You hit very hard, Warven, and I need to be able to do my job come morning." The Bundazanul adds with a chuckle.

[Warven(#26511)]
Lowing his War Hammer and breathing heavily the Stonewright says in-between deep breaths "You fight well Ranol, I have not been this tired after a match in some time." Resting his War Hammer upon the ground and leaning upon it he says "You're a strong one, I tried to pull the blows as much as I could, it's a task though when swinging a heavy weapon such as the War Hammer though"

Ranol rotates his shoulder a few times, grimacing. "Aye, I have tried to pull blows with the hammer as well, it's difficult." He pulls the cloth from the sword and carefully inspects the blade for any damage. "I wonder.. how do you fair against Frarin? If I were betting, I wouldn't be sure who to put my coin on."

[Warven(#26511)]
Still breathing heavily Warven smiles and says "Master Frarin is one of the Finest wielders of the War Hammer that I know, it would be a good spar. Leaving me with quite a few bruises Im sure." Lifting his War Hammer and resting it upon his shoulder he says "I would learn a good bit im sure"

"Aye.. he is very good." Ranol agrees, and finally seems satisfied that his blade is in good condition. He slides the broadsword into it's sheath and reaches to pull of his helmet, wiping sweat from his brow. "I only wish I knew why he's so angry at me right now."

[Warven(#26511)]
As Ranol puts his Sword away Warven looks at him and says "He is a moody one Master Frarin, it might not even have anything to do with you, it could be many a thing." Moving to his gear the Stonewright grabs a waterskin and takes a long drink. Tossing it to Ranol he says "Its just water, but like I was sayin' Frarin's anger might not have anything to do with you, the work of a Silver merchant must be quite angering"

Ranol takes the water, thanking him quietly before taking a sip. He passes it back while shaking his head. "No, I think he is angry with me. We had a conversation a several nights past that did not go well." He looks at the stonewright curiously, "How do you suppose being a merchant is angering?"

[Warven(#26511)]
Taking another long drink the Stonewright then says "The price of silver, not getting enough or way to much, no buyers, things like that" lowering his War Hammer he begins to undo the padding and looking back to Ranol he say "You and Frarin are friends, I doubt he would begrudge you for a disagreement...well not for too long anyway." Pausing to toss the padding ontop of the rest of his gear he says "What was the disagreement about if you don't mind me asking?"

"I.. " Ranol hesitates, running a hand through his hair. "Well, I had asked his advice on something. I'm really not sure why he's mad. I think maybe because he didn't agree with what I had said.. but .. I hadn't even made a decision yet." Clearly the huskarl is at a loss. He also failed to provide any real information on the topic of discussion.

[Warven(#26511)]
Removing his helm and putting it in the crock of his arm he leans upon his War Hammer once more and says "Well my friend it looks like you have two choices, don't worry about it and assume Frarin is just being moody like he is from time to time. Or you can speak with him about it"

Ranol nods in agreement. "Yes. You are right. I'm sure it will work itself out." The huskarl doesn't sound so convinced, but seems to be willing to put the conversation aside. "And what of mining? Is that angering?" He asks with a grin, reaching up to rub his shoulder again, trying to work the ache out.

[Warven(#26511)]
With a smile Warven says "Only when ungreatful Zinbar's try to take and claim what is not theirs.. It can be maddening though when you dig for months finding nothing, but you cant stop for you know the second you do someone else will come along, take one swing and fine a vein of silver or jewels." Taking another drink of water he says "But it is what I love"

"Not all the Zinbar are so bad..." Ranol comments quietly, running his hands through his hair again in attempt to smooth it back. "I enjoy working with wood. It helps me to relax."

[Warven(#26511)]
With a nod the Warven takes a deep breath and says "Yes you are right, not all of the Zinbar..." With a smile he continues "Wood hu, I would of never guessed. What have you carved?"

Ranol offers a small shrug, his chainmail softly ringing. "My father taught me of wood carving. I only do it for leisure, not for profit." After a moment he adds, "It was my grandfather that taught me to handle the sword. He was a Zinbar." The huskarl says with a wry grin and a black brow lifted.

[Frarin(#31050)] After supper time and for once not only has Frarin been on time to supper, but he is not working after it either. Indeed, he seems out on one of his habitual walks now, ever restless when in one place for a long period. He is smoking too, and clad in only a simple tunic and trousers as he wanders. His steps do not carry him directly to the Hall of Dodin, for he remains in the Hall of Silver Axes beyond, but he does slow as he nears the hall's entrance, peering in as if looking for something. And he seems to find it for he comes to a complete stop shortly thereafter.

[Warven(#26511)]
With a cocked eyebrow the Stonewright looks to Ranol and says "Its good to find leisure in something, I am lucky I find leisure in my choice of work. Although its not as interesting as your line of work" Taking another drink of water he shoulders his War Hammer and says "Your grandfather must have been very skilled with the sword"

"My work? Interesting?" Ranol chuckles again. "I train all day. I always figured it seemed rather dull to others." The huskarl gestures absently with one hand around the hall. "You help to create lasting changes to Erebor that will live on for centuries. I enjoy my work, but it is nothing like shaping stone, I suspect."

[Frarin(#31050)] A frown forms beneath Frarin's beard, but it is not mirrored by an angry drawing together of his brows. Rather, they lift and he takes a breath as if hesitant. Then, with a draw on his pipe, he approaches the entrance to the Hall of Dodin with limping steps. And as he nears, if Warven and Ranol do not notice him already, he nods to them and greets, "Hail, cousins." He sounds polite, if anything, in a distant sort of manner.

[Warven(#26511)]
Looking about the Hall Warven smiles and says "It is views like these that make me love my work, there is nothing like turning ruff stone into something beautiful, turning a jagged chamber into a great and beautiful hall with pillars and gilded walls, slow it may be, but the final results can be breathtaking." Pausing to look about the hall for a moment "With your work you get to travel and train at your hearts content"

Hearing the words of Frarin Warven turns and says "Master Frarin, it is good to see you. What brings you to these Halls?"

"Aye, traveling is enjoyable. Though, it makes my work far more stressful." The huskarl muses. He turns at the voice of another and greets Frarin in a more hesitant fashion than he might normally. "Good day, cousin." Ranol studies Frarin's face, trying to figure out what mood the silver merchant might be in.

[Frarin(#31050)] Frarin's face is unusual. Certainly it carries not the usual warmth of greeting reserved for friends, but there is not anger there either. He looks almost uncomfortable, brows lifted and mouth forming a bit of a smile in an almost apologetic manner. "Good day, Master Warven," he nods to the stonewright. "I am only walking after supper, it is a habit." Then he looks to Ranol and appears rather more ill at ease, forcing a half-smile. "How fare you, Ranol?"

[Warven(#26511)]
With a nod of his head Warven says "Ahh, I see it is a good night for a walk, but an even better night for training. Ranol and myself just finished up" Looking to Ranol he says with a grin "Ranol here might have a bruise or two.."

"We were just discussing who might win in a spar, Frarin.. You or Warven. Warven seemed convinced of your success." Ranol says easily, then reaches up to pat his right shoulder, "The bruises he gave me may speak otherwise." The huskarl adds with a grin, nodding in agreement with the stonewright's observation.

[Hildis(#23062)] Just steps behind Frarin another Barazin appears, this one dressed for training in chain mail that is beginning to show some wear. She carries a war hammer carefully wrapped to protect her sparring partner and dangles a helmet. Surprise and pleasure light her face when she sees who Frarin is in conversation with. "Ranol! Frarin! Master Frarin! How nice to see you." She gives each a quick bow and stands smiling.

[Frarin(#31050)] "Aye, Warven is quite good with that hammer," Frarin says, visibly relaxing at Ranol's grin. He looks to Warven and smiles. "I gave you a quite of beating on the pitch at Buhr Mahrling, but you have a talent with the war hammer, do not mistake. You could teach Ranol a thing or two, I'll wager," he says, half-smiling at he glances at Ranol. But then a voice from behind him draws his attention and he turns. "Well met, Hildis," he greets with a small smile and nod.

[Warven(#26511)]
Looking to Frarin Warven says "Ranol is a fine fighter, it was a good spar." Looking Frarin up and down he adds "If you were dressed for sparing I would gladly give you another go" Hearing Hildis he turns and bows his head says "Come to train I see, good to see you cousin"

Ranol looks over when Hildis joins them. It seems that the Barazin are representing tonight. He gives her a quiet smile and nod in greeting. "Good evening." His blue eyes wander back to Frarin, some curiousity in them, but it's to Warven that Ranol speaks. "Perhaps you could teach Hildis a few tricks, Warven? I don't think I should push this shoulder. It's aching.. I might have it looked at."

[Frarin(#31050)] Frarin's lips part hesitantly when Warven mentions the possibility of a spar, and oddly he glances at Ranol. But he nods at the huskarl's suggestion. "Aye, perhaps you could train with Hildis. I have already trained earlier this week anyhow. Perhaps after."

[Hildis(#23062)] Hildis returns the quiet smile to Ranol which spreads into a grin for Warven. "Cousin. Well met, Frarin. I am surrounded by some of the best among us in both war hammer and sword. And you want me to spar with Warven? I have heard about him." Hildis looks a bit wide-eyed at the prospect of entering the ring with Warven. "Ranol is so much better than I am ..." She shakes her head hesitantly.

[Warven(#26511)]
Looking to Hildis as she speaks the Stonewright smiles and says "Cousin, I am not nearly as good as you make me out to be, I am but average I assure you" Returning his helm to his head he walks a few paces away from the group and looks to Hildis and says with a big grin "Come now, your Barazin you were born with a War Hammer in your hands."

"I have been training for years.." Ranol says softly at Hildis's comparison. "You are improving very quickly, do not worry yourself." The huskarl is rubbing at his shoulder again, but doesn't seem to be in any tremendous discomfort. Frarin's look is met with a questioning one in return from the Bundazanul.

[Hildis(#23062)] "Hardly, I thought Barazins were born with a stone chisel in their hands." She pretends to look confused then with a wry shake of her head and an appeal to Mahal on her lips Hildis puts her war hammer down and settles the helmet on her head. She scoops the hammer up with alacrity and follows Warven into the ring. Taking the classic posture for war hammer, she distributes her weight, takes a deep breath and nods her readiness.

[Frarin(#31050)] Frarin takes a draw from his pipe and crosses his arms, backing away from the ring as Warven and Hildis prepare to spar. For the moment, his gaze is fixed firmly on the two, Ranol ignored.

[Warven(#26511)]
Taking up a fighting stance Warven smiles and says "I am sure you are better than you think" Nodding his head that he is also ready the Stonewright begins to move, lunging forward and swinging his War Hammer downwards aimed at Hildis's hip.

Warven attacks Hildis with his War Hammer, but Hildis parries the attack with its War Hammer!

[Hildis(#23062)] Tight lipped she returns the nod then breaks all her training by letting her eyes slide toward Ranol. Concentration returns quick enough for her to see the hammer swing and the air whistles with speed of the blow. She glides out of its range and uses her momentum to throw her weight behind a blow to his shoulder.

Hildis attacks Warven with its War Hammer, but Warven parries the attack with his shield!

Ranol watches the two, but before long his gaze goes back to Frarin and the way the Barazin is ignoring him. He sighs softly as things don't seem to have changed after all. The huskarl looks back to the spar, but asks in a soft rumble, "Where does your ire come from, Frarin?" Ranol isn't paying as close attention to the spar as he might normally.

[Warven(#26511)]
Stepping forward and raising his shield just in time to block the attack from Hildis, a lough "clanging" sound can be heard as War Hammer strikes shield. Warven quickly sidesteps whilst he swings his War Hammer in a downwards motion aimed at his opponents shoulder

Warven attacks Hildis with his War Hammer, but he misses by a mile.

[Frarin(#31050)] Frarin's expression is intent, his eyes never leaving the two sparing partners, save to glance to the floor when Ranol speaks to him. But then he is looking up again, watching Warven and Hildis. His gaze, however, is distant, not focused on the fight. "I...have often asked myself the same question." He says this with a sigh and pauses as if unsure how or whether he should continue.

[Hildis(#23062)] Perspiration has already begun to darken her beard and she no longer tries to watch Ranol and fight. Her world consists of the swing of the war hammer and the wind of its passage. Stepping obliquely to her left she swings low aiming for a knee.

Hildis attacks Warven with its War Hammer and mildly wounds him!

[Warven(#26511)]
Not expecting such a fast attack from Hildis Warven barely reacts until he feels the sting of her War Hammer against his knee, grunting loudly he sidesteps with a slight and swings his War Hammer upwards aimed for Hildis' middle.

Warven attacks Hildis with his War Hammer, but he misses by a mile.

"You are angry.. that much I can see." Ranol points out. "I do not know what it is that I said to make you so." He allows himself a small smile when Hildis smacks Warven with the hammer, his brows lifting. Soon though he speaks to Frarin again quietly. "If you are offended, I apologize. I did not intend to do so." It sounds as if Ranol is simply grasping blindly and has no idea what he said that might have offended the Barazin.

[Hildis(#23062)] Her eyes widen in surprise when she lands the blow and then manages to dance away from his counter-attack. It is a slow dance with the weight of the hammer in her arms and her breath quickens and deepens. She allows the heavy hammer to make her pirouette building speed for a hit directed at his ribs.

Hildis attacks Warven with its War Hammer and mildly wounds him!

[Warven(#26511)]
Once again Warven feels the sting of Hidis' War Hammer, shaking his head and mumbling something intangible to himself he jumps back and then quickly lunges forward moving much faster than before swinging his War Hammer in a downward motion aimed once again at Hildi's shoulder.

Warven attacks Hildis with his War Hammer and mildly wounds it!

[Frarin(#31050)] Frarin sighs again and looks down, shaking his head as he watches Warven and Hildis. There is even a hint of a humourless smile when he looks up again. "You do not see," he says, taking his pipe from his mouth. "I am not angry with you, not anymore." Hildis makes a successful hit to Warven and Frarin pauses, cocking a brow briefly as if approving. Then he abruptly turns to look at Ranol and, with a mixed expression, as if genuine but reluctant, says simply, "I'm sorry, Ranol."

Ranol feels some pride as his student succeeds where he had failed earlier. Then Ranol is focusing on his friend again, looking at Frarin in confusion still. "I.. what has changed? What made you angry before?" The huskarl asks, rubbing the back of his neck.

[Hildis(#23062)] Perhaps it is the worst failing she has, it might kill her one day if they were to fight side by side - Hildis takes her eyes off of her adversary's hammer searching for Ranol and she is struck. Grunting from the impact she staggers back, lowering her hammer in obvious pain. She takes a deep breath, her feet sliding on the floor as she circles Warven looking for an opening. Stamping her foot with a wordless cry she strikes for Warven's elbow.

Hildis attacks Warven with its War Hammer and mildly wounds him!

[Thari(#31038)]
A lady in fine red skirts enters the room, first studying the pair sparring and then quickly scanning the audience. Thari's eyes soon find Frarin and Ranol so close together and she hesitates, watching them.

[Warven(#26511)]
After striking Hilidis the Stonewright pauses, looking to make sure she is alright, a mistake in his part for he has no time to react as she attacks once more. And again Warven feels the pain of her War Hammer, this time upon his elbow. Nearly dropping his own War Hammer after the blow , sidestepping he lunges forward swinging his War Hammer in an angled attack aimed at her War Hammer wielding arm.

Warven attacks Hildis with his War Hammer and mildly wounds it!

[Frarin(#31050)] Lips pursing as if the worst is past, Frarin refocuses on the fight, or at least looks in that direction. "Oh," he sighs, shaking his head, "whatever always makes me angry. I've a temper, Ranol, and I generally make well avoiding it by remaining apathetic to most that goes on around me. Only those I care about seem to receive the brunt of it." He sounds sincere, rather than short or irritated.

With a breath, he looks again to Ranol and the familier bluntness takes over. "I equated you with Braldor. It was not right, it was not...logical, but it made me angry. That was why."

[Hildis(#23062)] Separating her hands Hildis tries to parry the blow but she turns into the strike instead. Her eyes water with the blow and she back peddles away from him. She gulps air and mumbles encouragement to herself as she raises her hammer and winces. She does not have the same speed but she tries to put all of her weight behind a swing for his upper thigh.

Hildis attacks Warven with its War Hammer and mildly wounds him!

Ranol smiles faintly as Frarin explains his mannerisms, taking some comfort in that. It fades at the mention of Braldor. His face becomes contemplative and his gaze drops to the floor as he tries to think back to the conversation on that busy day. "Because I work so much?" He asks, finally, uncertain. He doesn't notice Thari, and isn't even paying much attention to the spar now, despite the fact that Warven is well getting what he deserves.

[Warven(#26511)]
Once again the Stonewright finds himself pausing to make sure his strike was not too hard and once again finds himself in a great disadvantage and -again- feels the sting of Hildis' War Hammer this time upon his thigh. Grunting in pain he lunges backwards only to have his leg almost give out as he does so. Stretching his leg he lunges forward once again on the offensive, swinging his War Hammer in a downward motion aimed at Hildis' middle.

Warven attacks Hildis with his War Hammer, but he misses by a handspan.

Thari spends a bit more time studying the situation. Her grey eyes are sharp on Hildis and Warven for a moment, then focus in on Frarin and Ranol. She sighs, mutters something to herself, then picks up her skirts and bustles toward the latter pair.

[Frarin(#31050)] Frarin snorts softly to himself and actually smiles, shaking his head as he watches Hildis and Warven. "Because you work so hard -for Braldor-," he says gruffly, tone as if laughing at himself. Eyes rolling up for a second, he snorts again. "I'm a terrible hypocrite, Ranol, and I was not very pleasant about it at your age. I spoke with Thari shortly after I left your house that night. I tried to justify myself to her. But...it did not make me more at ease. Do you understand?"

[Hildis(#23062)] Hildis might smile at the miss were she not grunting with pain each time she balanced her war hammer for a new attack. Her red beard is dark as iron rich earth from perspiration. She does not lunge in to strike him anew. Breath and respite are needed so she dances in a circle. Hefting her hammer with gritted teeth she moves first to her left then pushes to the right and a blow for his upper arm.

Hildis attacks Warven with its War Hammer and mildly wounds him!

[Warven(#26511)]
Not expecting such a fast attack to come from Hildis Warven goes to block the attack but not in time, feeling the sting -once again- of her War Hammer, grimacing a bit he says "good strike" spinning about he swings his War Hammer low using his momentum aimed at Hildis' legs.

Warven attacks Hildis with his War Hammer and mildly wounds it!

Ranol takes a slow breath, trying to keep a calm face. He is less successful at keeping heat from his words. "I had hoped that our friendship was beyond yours and Braldor's dislike for each other.. Frarin." There is a faint expression of injury on his face again, his thick beard not concealing some of his disappointment. "I try not to judge the rivalry between you two, but.. I do prefer to stay out of it." Thari is approaching and he gives his cousin a nod in greeting, now completely oblivious to the spar going on.

[Frarin(#31050)] "Aye well," Frarin says, rubbing a hand at the back of his head. He seems...ashamed? "No one is perfect and I certainly am not." There is a touch of strain in his words then too, but he turns when Ranol nods to someone behind him and abruptly the silversmith smiles. "Good evening, Thari."

[Hildis(#23062)] A moment of inattention, a moment of being off balance - Hildis blinks looking up at Warven as she finds herself sitting on the practice room floor. She rubs her thigh, "I believe that one will leave a lasting impression. You have signed your work cousin and I think it is time for me to stop." Gingerly she rises and leans on her war hammer smiling wearily. "A good spar, Warven!"

[Bifur(#6709)] The lone, short figure of Bifur comes into the hall, his eyes shifting among the instruments of war. A slight grin shows on his face as he nods in greeting to a couple dwarves. Taking his rather impressive looking battle axe off his back, he contents himself with settling against a wall and checking the blade while he casually observes others in the room.

[Warven(#26511)]
Leaning in and patting Hildis upon the shoulder Warven smiles and says "A very good spar, you are far better than you let on." Rubbing his knee he grins and then goes to rubbing his elbow for a moment, looking back to Hildis "You had some good strikes, I was surprised at your speed" offering her his shoulder to lean on he adds "shall we join the rest?"

[Thari(#31038)]
Thari nods at Ranol without quite looking at him, then comes up and puts her hand on Frarin's arm. "Hullo, dear, how are you?" Her attention is back on Hildis and Warven. "You know, I haven't sparred in some time and I've half a mind to do so." And then her eyes wander beyond the pair to old Bifur. For some reason, she half-smiles.

[Bifur(#6709)] As his eyes peruse the ancient blade in his hands, Bifur gets a faraway look in his eyes -- as if no one else were in the room for a few moments. He is lost in the crafstmanship and beauty of one of the finest axes ever seen. Though it is old beyond old, it shines as if newly forged and yet to see a day in battle. The same cannot be said for Bifur, of course. Every battle and skirmish fought in the service of the House of Durin can be seen within him.

Ranol mulls over Frarin's words and gives an accepting nod. "Perhaps I put too much thought into my work when I am off-duty." He says finally, as if trying for some sort of compromise to show that he doesn't think himself any better. "Good evening, Thari." He says warmly when she gets closer, then looks on now to watch Hildis.

[Hildis(#23062)] The rest of the room comes into focus as she leans on Warven's shoulder and settles her warhammer on her unhurt side. Ranol had been there all along for her. She gives Thari a quick nod and attempts a smile but winces instead as they step from the ring. One eyebrow rises and her eyes widen slightly at Bifur's presence and the axe he is carrying. Refocusing on Ranol something in the set of his shoulders provokes a frown.

"I want to talk to Ranol, Warven. Thank you for the excellent spar."

[Frarin(#31050)] "Good, good," Frarin says absently when Thari comes to his side and he pats her hand. He takes a draw on his pipe and lets a whirl of smoke circle his head. He glances at Ranol and gives a silent nod, as if the matter is finished. He looks back to Thari though when the healer mentions sparring and he glances about the chamber, a half-smile akin to hers sneaking into his beard. But he shakes his head, chuckling softly to himself.

[Warven(#26511)]
With the nod of his head Warven says "Great spar Hildis, we will have to do it again" Looking to the group he bows his head to Thari and Bifur, resting his War Hammer upon his shoulder he rubs his elbow and chuckles at himself. Looking to Ranol he says with a grin and chuckle "Hildis here is better with a War Hammer than you Ranol."

COMBAT: Your health improves.

[Thari(#31038)]
Thari's still looking at Bifur now. She distractedly nods when Ranol addresses her, but soon leaves her husband's side. "Care for a round?" she shouts toward the old war-hero, dressed unsuitably for it in rich cloth and gems.

"Aye, that I knew, cousin." Ranol says with a laugh as he answers the stonewright. "She clobbers me often enough with it. I am convinced most everyone in the mountain is better than I with a hammer." Does he notice Thari's failure to greet him? The huskarl glances to her, but says nothing. That look of confusion he held earlier seems to be returning, though.

[Bifur(#6709)] The old war marshal's eyes never leave the blade of his axe. In fact, one might not be sure he heard the question if not for his response in a harsh, gutteral voice, "A round? If'n ye don' mind a few bruises..." With that, Bifur seems to be satisfied with his axe, returning it to his back. Standing up, he grunts, "Tis the warrior that makes the weapon, not the weapon the warrior..."

[Warven(#26511)]
Slowly Warven continues to rub his elbow, looking about the group he says "It has been a please but I must return to the mines. Ranol, Hilids, thank you for the spar." Bowing his head to the group he grabs his pack upon the floor and shoulders it before making his way towards the large wooden. As he reaches the door he looks back and gives a wave then exits the Hall of Dodin.

[Thari(#31038)]
Thari is reaching for a small padded axe when she hesitates, lowering her brows while looking at Bifur. "You're wanting to have at it with bare fists, ye're saying then?" she asks in a half-suspicious tone.

[Frarin(#31050)] "Thari is...not happy, Ranol," Frarin rumbles musefully, watching Thari leave but leaning towards Ranol. "She came home upset the same day I spoke with you." But he says no more, instead waving to Hildis. "Well fought, lass, you had the better of him for quite a time!"

[Bifur(#6709)] Nodding his head, Bifur moves forward with nothing but his fists as weapons held before him. He speaks in a deep, stony voice that reverberates in the hall, "I'm sayin' fists with the right trainin' are more of a weapon than a battle axe without. In the midst of battle, a weapon may break. One may be disarmed. A warrior survives such things. The untrained do not."

[Hildis(#23062)] Hildis is flushed from the spar, as she approaches the group around Ranol she gives everyone a tired smile, a puzzled tilt to her head. She removes her helmet which has flattened out her darkened wet braids and stands catching her breath. "Well, cousin Warven can fight, that is for sure. Thank you, Frarin," she smiles ducking her head at the praise, a vague half-smile on her face. Her glance moves between Frarin and Ranol an unasked question in her eyes which widen when she sees Thari moving off towards the ring with Bifur. "Thari is going to spar with Bifur?" she asks increduously.

[Thari(#31038)]
Thari puts her hands on her hips and presses her lips together while looking at Bifur. "A better warrior is never disarmed! Well enough then," she says with a grunt, placing a ruby ring in a pocket before making fists and approaching him. "I've hit a goblin or two like this before. "

Thari is wary in her stance, crouching enough that her skirts sweep the floor.

Ranol groans softly, a deep rumbling thing in his throat that any that wasn't a khazad might mistaken for a growl. "It seems I made a great many mistakes that day." He murmurs, and seems willing to tackle this latest fiasco at a later time because he's giving Hildis a broad smile. "Aye, very well fought. I am glad to see that Warven got some bruises in return." The huskarl says in a good-natured fashion, grinning. "It seems that she is. I only hope Lord Bifur is careful.." There is a trace of concern in his voice.

[Bifur(#6709)] Shrugging his shoulders, Bifur grunts, "Akh... a warrior that never gets disarmed. Surely must be a hero among the dwarven people fer such mastery of battle!" With a wry smirk, Bifur crouches low and starts to circle Thari warily, "Armed or unarmed... however ya please. Let's see what ya got." The old dwarf motions with his hands for Thari to press her attack.

[Frarin(#31050)] "Not only yours, cousin," Frarin mutters. But he is watching Thari now, a mixture of doubt and pride in his expression.

[Thari(#31038)]
Thari circles him as well, pressing a little closer. She watches Bifur with a blank face now, concentrating. All at once her attack comes. She darts forward, fists held close, and tries to kick him in the shin!

Thari attacks Bifur with her Bare Hands, but she misses by a handspan.

[Bifur(#6709)] As he circles Thari, Bifur's eyes focus on hers intently. The eyes betray her intent before the attack unfolds and Bifur moves quickly to the left to avoid the kick, while at the same time bringing his right hand around in a sidelong blow aimed for Thari's exposed ribcage!

Bifur attacks Thari with his Bare Hands and mildly wounds her!

[Thari(#31038)]
It's a flurry of motion. Bifur's fist hits with a meaty sound and a grunted, "Damn!" from Thari, but even as she steps to the side her fist is headed toward the hero's temple.

Thari attacks Bifur with her Bare Hands, but she misses by a mile.

[Bifur(#6709)] The old war marshal is much quicker than he looks! With a spry movement to his right and a quick duck of the head, he avoids Thari's blow. Already in a low position, he keeps his head down and charges at Thari, looking to shove the top of his head directly into her abdomen to knock her off balance!

Bifur attacks Thari with his Bare Hands and mildly wounds her!

[Frarin(#31050)] Frarin winces crosses his arms. Brow now furrowed, he is at last concentrating on sparring, but he is puffing heavily on his pipe as he watches Bifur and Thari.

[Thari(#31038)]
A fabulous tackle! Thari's breath is knocked out of her as she is knocked back. She tries to keep her feet beneath her but stumbles on her own skirts. There is the sound of cloth ripping.

She sits there for a moment, gasps to catch her breath. "Warriors also change into trousers first," she says in a breathless, rueful voice, just as she kicks out her yellow boots to try to hook Bifur's ankle and pull him over.

Thari attacks Bifur with her Bare Hands, but she misses by a mile.

[Bifur(#6709)] As Thari presses, Bifur yields ground to avoid the trap! He manages to keep his feet out of entanglement, but stumbles backward a bit in the process. Rather than pushing an awkward position, Bifur backs off for a moment to reset his balance and crouch down menacingly, eyes locked on Thari.

[Hildis(#23062)] "Aye, he got a few bruises..." Hildis interrupts herself and whistles as Bifur knocks Thari to the ground. She sidles closer to Ranol and reaches for his hand her eyes riveted on the match.

Ranol is also engrossed in the spar between Thari and Bifur, wincing with each hit and wondering if Thari will throw in the towel before or after she's sporting two black eyes. When Hildis takes his hand he glances over in startlement, then seems accepting of it and smiles as he turns his attention back to the fight. After a moment he squeezes her hand briefly.

[Thari(#31038)]
Thari rolls to her feet and crouches as well, her fists tightly curled, her breathing coming quick. Behind her, there is a long horizontal tear in the back of her red gown a couple of inches above the hem. Some sort of a yellow underskirt beneath has a smaller tear in it, too.

She mimics his posture and starts to circle him, looking for a weakness in his defences, but doesn't strike yet.

[Bifur(#6709)] With a mirthless grin, Bifur approaches Thari, speaking in a gravelly voice, "Ya gotta do better'n that." In a flash, Bifur moves to the right looking like he's going to try to take down Thari by tripping her over his left leg. But at the last moment, he moves in towards Thari rather than around her, bringing his elbow into her stomach!

Bifur attacks Thari with his Bare Hands and mildly wounds her!

[Thari(#31038)]
Thari deftly steps forward, away from Bifur's left leg but right into his elbow. The lass makes a sickened sound but brings her fist up while they are in such close proximity, right toward his bearded chin.

Thari attacks Bifur with her Bare Hands and mildly wounds him!

[Hildis(#23062)] Hildis eyes dart to look at Ranol in profile as he reacts to the blows given and received then dart down for a glance at their two hands. It is a first! Hildis carefully suppresses a smile, sighs happily and watches Bifur knock the breath out of Thari. Thari's riposte makes her grin.

[Frarin(#31050)] Frarin winces again, but his hands clench into fists and a subdued smile lights briefly beneath his beard.

[Bifur(#6709)] The old dwarf smirks just a bit as his elbow strikes home. But in his overconfidence, he underestimates Thari's counterattack. Too slowly he tries to avoid the uppercut, her fist striking him in the jaw. Letting out a fearsome bellow, Bifur's eyes betray the raw barbarian within. Though smarting from the blow to his chin, his response is immediate. He lowers his shoulder and aims to bowl Thari over with brute force!

Bifur attacks Thari with his Bare Hands and mildly wounds her!

Ranol is too focused to note Hildis's reaction, and actually laughs when Thari finally scores a hit on Bifur. "Get him, Thari!" He calls finally in encouragement, grinning. The huskarl still has concern mixed on his face, but Thari is older than him and surely knows what she's doing, right?

[Thari(#31038)]
Thari too gives a cry as Bifur bellows, but this soon becomes a laugh. Yes, she is laughing wildly right up until the moment that his shoulder catches her, lifts her entirely off of her feet, and throws her to the ground again. Her head hits the floor in one thunk and then she is slowly, cautiously sitting up. "Ooh!" she grunts to Bifur. Good one!"

[Bifur(#6709)] For a moment it looks as though Bifur is ready to press his attack further while Thari is defenseless... his eyes glow with unconcealed rage. Yet his actions remain in complete control. His fist starts to strike at Thari, but stops in mid swing and becomes an open hand, offering to help her up. With his gravelly voice, he grunts, rubbing his chin with his other hand, "Ya got a solid fist... jes gotta watch those feints."

[Thari(#31038)]
Thari's eyes widen and she ducks further downward to avoid his fist-- but then it becomes an open hand. She puts her hand in his and lifts to her feet. "Thank ye," she says with a wry smile. "Just you be careful in being overconfident, and you'll turn out all right."

She steps back and bows deeply before Bifur. At last she turns to walk back toward her husband and friends.

[Bifur(#6709)] With a smirk and a laugh that doesn't sound too jolly, Bifur nods his head, saying to no one in particular, "Even veterans need ta keep their focus." Looking intently at Thari, he bows just slightly and says, "Tis the benefit of real fightin' in training -- lessenin' the impact, o' course. One cannot fake the unpredictability of an opponent. "

"Good job, Thari!" Ranol says brightly when the spar is over, trying to be cheerful despite the cold should she was giving him earlier.

[Hildis(#23062)]
Shaking her head in pure admiration Hildis adds, "Great job! Lord Bifur is a strong one but so are you."

[Thari(#31038)]
Thari turns and yet again bows deeply toward Bifur. "I will spend more time sparring, then, for the practical knowlege I have will soon become old. I thank ye again!"

Soon back by Frarin's side, she shakes her head at Ranol and Hildis. "Not half so strong as he, no!" Her eyes go up and she murmurs in Frarin's ear.

[Bifur(#6709)] With the match over, Bifur nods in acknowledgement to Hildis and Ranol before going back over to the wall to check on his axe and watch the others again. One gets the feeling Bifur spends most of his time doing this sort of thing.

Ranol bows when Bifur looks his way, then shifts his attention back to Hildis. "Have you eaten yet this evening?" He asks with another smile on his face. Whatever little conversation he had with Frarin, it's improved his mood considerably.

[Hildis(#23062)] Holding Ranol's hand in chainmail - Hildis looks quite happy about it. "Ah...I had quite forgotten and I am ravenous. Perhaps, we should eat out?" Could Hildis be thinking of his last gallant attempt to feed her?

[Thari(#31038)]
After Thari has murmured something to Frarin, they both make their excuses to Ranol and Hildis (Frarin being, for once, more cordial than his wife). They depart the hall.

Ranol waves goodbye to his cousin and her husband.. or perhaps to his friend and his wife who is so very unfriendly? Then the huskarl looks back to Hildis. "Somewhere quiet would be nice.." He says, then releases her hand and begins to collect up his gear. "I should probably go talk with your father again sometime soon, though. We spend too much time together without his knowledge."

[Hildis(#23062)] Hildis waves to Thari and Frarin again and turns to Ranol. "I did already. Just two days ago." She looks down, a gentle smile touched with sadness on her face. "He's changed. I think...I don't know what to lay it to. I think my mother had some big talks with him while I was travelling. Maybe my leaving the house for the first time." She shrugs and looks up, "He is not nearly so pig headed. But you are welcome to talk to him if you like..." she chuckles, "Who knows he may be nice to you?"

"You did? Oh." Ranol is surprised and plunks his helmet back on his head before pulling his cloak back on. "And he is okay with the time we spend?" Not that it's really all that much, but the Bundazanul has ever said that he isn't comfortable with sneaking around.

[Hildis(#23062)] "Well, yes I did. I thought he should know that we had, I suppose, moved on from just wanting to have a dinner together towards..." She ignores the crash of arms around them and moves closer, still not close enough to embarrass him but a more intimate distance. "What would you call this?"

Ranol is thoughtful as he shoulders the last of his gear, wincing at the contact to his bruised shoulder. At least the young couple is considerate of the people around them so far as closeness goes.. unlike some dwarves that are playing with their weapons off in a corner. "I suppose.. a relationship?" He asks, trying the word out as a spoken entity, instead of an idea.

[Hildis(#23062)] "I suppose that would fit. We are not engaged. But committed. Does that fit?" She also is trying these words out loud.

"Aye.. Committed. That is good." Ranol says quietly in agreement, a sincere smile on his face. He begins walking towards the door. "A committed relationship. Or we can simply tell others it is a courtship. They are close enough."

[Hildis(#23062)] "He tried to get angry but I wouldn't let him. He was pushing for engaged or betrothed. I said give us time." She picks up the hammer laying at her feet and her helmet following out the door. "Courtship works for me too." She smiles at his back and swings her helmet playfully.
