Description: It's late afternoon and people are beginning to wrap up their work days. The tavern hasn't begun to fill up, but there are few dwarves enjoying early dinners or simply having a smoke and a drink. The barkeep, Old Lorim, is wiping down tables at a lazy pace.
[Ovor(#20753)] Sitting towards the back of the tavern there are three Dwarves one is old, while the other two are young. They talk amongst themselves, and for all appearances seem to be a father and his two sons out to enjoy a day in the tavern. Of course, they're not father and sons rather, the older one is Filur (the political advisor for the Thane Ovor), while the other two are Bolak and Dolak, two of his associates.
Of course, to know this, you would have to get close. Their talk at the moment hides their watching and listening.
A maiden dwarf walks the corridor with a quick, determined pace. She looks neither left or right though other's might glance at the attention she calls to herself with her speed. She is brightly dressed for an afternoon and for the tavern she is headed towards but does not once turn her head to see if someone watches.
Hildis pushes the tavern door open with determination, careful not to crush the letter she carries, and moves into the room to get her bearings. Seeing the bar she heads straight across the room, winding her way through tables, ignoring any stares she might be earning and goes to the bartender.
"Excuse me, are you, ah, Varn?" she asks with a quick glance to both sides to see who might overhear her.
"Me? Varn? Nay.. Old Lorim I be. This is my tavern, lass." The barkeep straightens from wiping a table down, showing his ample belly and thick long brown beard.
[Ovor(#20753)] The fact that Hildis walks with such determination and directness is what first captures the attention of Filur and his associates. They focus more now upon the Dwarven lass and her conversation with Lorim Bolak and Dolak seem ready to move at a word or sign from Elder Filur. For the moment, Filur gives no such indication.
Her expression is downcast, "I thought there was a Varl here," she says pressing her lips together in frustration and looks about her again. She take in the dwarves at the tables and hugs herself to the bar as though she wished to hide herself. "Do you know where I may find him?"
"Might be one of the customers.. Let me ask, lass." The old dwarf says in a kindly voice, giving her a small pat on the shoulder. Then he turns and addresses the room, "Is there a Varn here?".. Then he looks back at Hildis, "Or is it Varl?" He pats his belly as he looks back to see if any respond. "Varl.. Varn.. Any be by such a name?" He announces again, rather indifferent.
[Ovor(#20753)] That seems to seal it. A slight flicker of the hand from Filur, and Bolak and Dolak are on their feet, moving towards Hildis. The Elder stands shortly afterwards, speaking aloud. "I am afraid I will have to ask you to come with us, lass. It... would be best if you did not attempt to resist."
Hildis begins to turn when the bartender announces the name to the tavern at large and sees the dwarves approaching the bar with some purpose. Her mouth makes a perfectly round O as do her eyes when the dwarf's words register.
"Resist? What?" She actually searches the bar, looking left and right to see if the words were meant for her.
"I'm just looking for Varl..ah, Varn. I mean I have.." and she looks at the letter she clutches and at the dwarves who seem to surround her with such determination.
Old Lorim the barkeep looks towards the three dwarves. "Eh? What's going on, Advisor?" He asks, rubbing his belly again and glancing around the tavern. "Is there trouble? The lass is just looking for a fellow." Something occurs to him and he looks at Hildis sharply, "Ye ain't a Bundazanul, are ya?"
[Ovor(#20753)] "Varn is just a false name for Bokin, who has been involved with... less than reputable activities, shall we say." The Advisor's eyes flick about the tavern a moment before he frowns. "It looks like he has eluded my grasp again..." The eyes return to Hildis, and a humourless, wintery smile comes onto Filur's face.
"I shall have to settle for one of his associates, then. As I said, you will have to come with us... we have some questions that need answering."
The maiden dwarf shakes her head with an expression of surprise and faint distaste. "Nay, I am clan Barazin. And I do not understand!" she says to the formidable three that stand around her with an appeal.
"I was asked not to speak about it and gave my word," her words are clipped and firm and she offers no more of an explanation.
"Bokin..? Can't say as I know that one, either." The barkeep gives a small shrug. "Well I don't want any unsavory business in my tavern. You know Old Lorim does honest work, Advisor? No trouble here.." The old dwarf steps back out of the way, holding his hands up dismissively.
[Ovor(#20753)] The Advisor nods to Lorim. "Of course, Lorim. You cannot help that it may happen under your very nose." Another wintery smile from Filur before he focuses his attention back upon Hildis, a scowl briefly maring that smile. "You do not seem to understand, lass. You have given your word to someone who is not worthy of it. If you are carrying anything you were going to deliver to Bokin, we shall have to take that as well. If you fail to answer our questions, we will have no recourse but to request that the Narag confine you until such a time that you feel like speaking. With the type of deals that Bokin is typically involved in... it would be very bad for you not to cooperate."
The Barazin daughter closes her eyes a moment and shakes her head. Opening her eyes she fixes the Advisor with a determined expression, "I gave my word and how could I know this, this Bokin is a scroundrel. How can you arrest me for carrying the letter of a friend..." She sighs and spreads her hands, "Anything I say to protect myself breaks my word," she says slowly and with dawning realization of her predicament.
[Ovor(#20753)] "Hand over the letter. As for how we can arrest you... as I said, Bokin is involved in matters that are less than reputable. As far as we know, you are one of his associates, and until that is proven otherwise..." Filur trails off after a few moments, shrugging his shoulders. "At any rate, do you truely believe he will meet with you now? Knowing that we have caught you?"
"How should I know?" Hildis asks with an affronted air, hands on her hips, the letter still clutched so hard in her right hand that the seal threatens to break.
"I have no idea who this Bokin fellow is or who he associates with and why you are after him," she says picking up speed. "And since when does a dwarf have to prove that he or she is not guilty? All good dwarves are innocent and subject to their clan law until proven guilty," she says with indignation.
[Ovor(#20753)] "You can choose to give us the letter, or we will take it. Either way, it /will/ get into our hands. Your denials do nothing to prove you are innocent, lass." That wintery smile comes upon Filur's face once more. "If you are truly innocent, why not give it to us? If you are so convinced, where is the harm?"
The smile fanishes, the Advisor's face beoming like stone. "You have a choice before you. Choose wisely. And choose now."
Hildis takes a quick, deep breath and shuts her mouth. She lifts her chin higher.
"I will not break my word though the letter be given to me by a villan or a good dwarf. My word is my word. And I tell you I bring it in innocence of its contents and of the receiver," she looks to each of them, her gaze resting longest on the Advisor as she says each slowly measured word.
[Siv(#24218)] In walks Siv at this point, perhaps wanting nothing more than a good pint of ale. She is drawn up short, of course, at the words Hildis says as she enters.
[Ovor(#20753)] "You do not understand, do you? You would keep your word with someone who would likely betray you if it served his goals? Innocence proves nothing you are carrying it. You are working with Bokin." Filur pauses for a few moments before he speaks once more. "Give us the letter and tell us who gave you it. That is the only solution that involves you spending the least ammount of time confined by either us or the Narag.
"If it is an innocent letter, then you will be let on your way your word will take little damage, given the circumstances. But your refusal to prove your innocence by letting us examine the letter only serves to undermine the very innocence you claim to have."
Hildis's eyes rise to the ceiling as if beseeching some help from on high when she sees Siv walk in. She deliberately turns her head to exclude her from the predicament she finds herself in.
"You accuse wrongly. You condemn me when I do not even know the person I was seeking. I sought one named Varn, though I thought it Varl, and did not know it was a false name. I will not give a letter that I carry in good faith even if it makes me guilty in your eyes. I am a dwarf of her word," she says on a rising note of anger and clutches the letter so hard that the seal cracks open.
[Ovor(#20753)] "Are you willing to risk the damage to your reptuation? If you give us the letter, it will be a quiet matter. But if you force us to imprison you because of your refusal, word will get out as to why and from there..." Filur trails off as he catchs sight of Siv the Political Advisor nods his head towards the other Zinbar Dwarf before he speaks once more.
"I would not like to take the letter by force, lass my lads are wound up from the whole matter with Bundazanul and they may not be gentle. It would be best for all involved if you were to hand the letter over."
[Siv(#24218)] "Imprison?" Siv says, sounding surprised. She walks toward the group even though Hildis has turned deliberately away from her. "Is there a problem? Hildis has an honest reputation."
Hildis shakes her head in mute determination to them. The letter has begun to lose it's rectangular form under the pressure of her hold.
"I would lose my reputation were I to go back on my word, sir," she says after Siv has spoken. Hildis nods her thanks to her.
[Ovor(#20753)] "A reputation that will become less than honest, I believe, from now on. She is dealing with people that engage in a trade that is not entirely legal, and she will do nothing to prove her innocence." The Advisor sighs softly before a slight scowl comes upon his face. "Then we are left with little choice. Restrain her we shall have to take her to visit the Narag. I am sure they have room in their cells until she decides she feels like speaking." That said, the brothers Bolak and Dolak move to restrain Hildis.
"For all we know, after all, she has been one of the major figures in this business for some time now perhaps Bokin was not the only one the eyes and ears of the Zinbar should have been keeping a watch upon."
[Siv(#24218)] "Wait! Don't do that!" Siv tries to interrupt and push between Bolak and Dolak. "It's...well, I'll vouch for her. All right? Will that do? You can't just go about restraining her for no good reason--and as far as I can see, she's done nothing! Besides, she's not Zinbar. Are you trying to start a clan _war_?"
Hildis gulps air but narrows her eyes at the Advisor when he accuses her of having plotted. "Then you will have a long time to wait. I do not break my word," she glares fiercely at the two who move in on her and with a quick gesture pushes the opened letter into her bodice.
"Siv tell my family that I have been wrongly accused of...of...knowing someone that is a criminal and that they take me to the Narag, please." Tears glisten in her eyes at the mention of her family but she presses her lips together so hard it makes her beard lift. Siv's word rise over hers.
[Ovor(#20753)] "Which is why we are not taking her to /our/ cells, Siv." Replies Filur, almost in a conversational tone. "We are taking her to the Narag. She came here to meet with someone that is known to be involved in shady deals and matters, not to mention a criminal, and refuses to provide the one thing that can prove... or break... her claim of innocence."
The Advisor shrugs his shoulders softly. "There is little we can do. We cannot let her go, for the contents of the letter she refuses to give may contain anything from a meeting of Bokin and his confederates to the next thing they wish to... engage in."
[Siv(#24218)] Siv shakes her head. "Then...call her Thane in...or something..." she tries, grasping at straws now. "If you throw her in our cells, this will start an all out war. Or at least another clan feud, and then there will be /two/ clans allied against Zinbar. Do you want to ruin /all/ our business? Make us entirely dependent on trade with Dale? Think, Filur. It's more than likely--no..I will stake my personal reputation on it that Hildis isn't knowingly involved in anything criminal." She turns to that woman. "Hildis...who told you to meet with Bokin?"
Hildis regards her unexpected champion for a long moment and shakes her head saying quietly, "I am beginning to think that he does not deserve protection if he is using me but I gave my word, Siv. I cannot tell. But I thank you from the bottom of my heart. My mother and father will vouch for me and they can perhaps help get to the bottom of this."
Raising her chin again, she looks at the Advisor, "I do not mean to thwart you in your investigation. It is not my goal. We do not criminals among us. But I have told you my position."
[Ovor(#20753)] "Barazin do not have a Thane they have a Steward. And, as I said, we are /not/ taking her to our cells. There is no need the Narag will keep her just as well." Filur regards Hildis for several silent moments before he speaks. "It appears that more and more, all but Zinbar value word over justice. So be it." A shrug comes from the Advisor. "Your position has been noted. Will you go willingly to the Narag, or must we... escort you?"
[Siv(#24218)] Siv holds her tongue now, waiting for Hildis's decision, though she nods to the woman's words about her parents.
[Hildis(#23062)]
"Tell my family. And tell my mother that Purna sends her best wishes," she says simply and then turns to the advisor.
"I have something to propose to you. Let the letter be given to this Varn by someone else and arrest him. I will go with you quietly and even give you the letter but only on that condition."
[Ovor(#20753)] "And just who would you recommend, hm? Bokin knows my associates, so he will not deal with them. We will take the letter, however, and we will consider the situation. If we find someone that is suitable, we will give them the letter... and hopefully we can finally get Bokin." Thus speaks Filur.
[Siv(#24218)] "I'll tell them, yes," Siv nods to Hildis. Then she blinks. "Purna? Ranol's mother? You're thinking about PUrna at a time like this?" Siv stares hard, thoughts working behind her eyes. "You wouldn't, by any chance, have had a conversation with Ranor lately, have you?" she asks slowly.
[Hildis(#23062)]
Hildis is reaching into her bodice to take the now crumpled letter out and stops the barest instant at Siv's question. She swallows and nods holding the letter in her hand.
[Ovor(#20753)] With a brief flicker of a smile over his face, Filur takes the letter, nodding slightly. "Very good... very good... I shall examine this now Bolak and Dolak will escort you."
[Siv(#24218)] "Ranor..." Siv says slowly, biting her lower lip. "Ranor is probably the man behind this," she then repeats for Filur's sake. She rolls her eyes and crosses her arms over her chest, stepping back now to just watch for the moment.
Hildis releases the breath that she has held for too long and blanches when the guards take her arms. "I count on you to use this to further justice, otherwise my word is broken and my reputation as well, Advisor."
Bowing as low as the guards will let her to Siv, she murmurs, "Thank you."
[Ovor(#20753)] Sitting towards the back of the tavern there are three Dwarves one is old, while the other two are young.
