Description: Many dwarves witnessed the excitement in the Great Hall of Thrain, and many more will hear of it as rumors fly through the mountain. It's a dwarf with slicked back blond hair and an oily straw-colored beard that hurries to catch up to Siv as she makes her way to the Zinbar halls. "Siv! Hold up, lass." The voice is sibilant, like water rolling over some logs. She's met this dwarf once before when she paid Ranol a visit in his home.
[Siv(#24218)] Fire in her eyes, Siv turns about quickly, fists balled up and ready to slug someone. She only relaxes a little as she sees it is Ranor. "Yes sir?" she manages to be polite at least, containing her anger.
Ranor gives the woman a smooth smile, his eyes adopting a sad smile. "Are you okay? Has anyone thought to check on your health?" He moves foward, reaching one hand up in an attempt to lightly brush back her hair and see for himself. "I saw how hard she hit you.." He murmurs, making a tsking sound with his tongue.
[Siv(#24218)] "What?! I'm fine!" Siv's instinct is to pull away from Ranor, though he dwarf's sad smile does make her hesitate. "Really," her tone softens, "I'm fine. She only slapped me and not hard. What angers me is I have no idea what she thinks I did."
"Shhh.. shh. Be at ease, lass. I mean you no ill will. I know you're a dear friend of my son and I wanted to be certain you are well." Ranor gives her a gentle pat on the arm. "Who can say what Thari is really after.. she is much like her father. She accuses you of spreading rumors, yes?" The woodcarver begins to slowly walk again, glancing over to be sure she's moving again. "Best not to stand in one place where long ears may be listening.." He says in a soft whisper.
[Siv(#24218)] Siv reddens, then hastily begins to walk at a very brisk pace. "Yes, she accuses me of saying horrible things about her. And everyone--even Ranol!!--believes her, when it's all a viscious lie! She...it's all very confusing." She frowns over at Ranor. "And I think that your son and I aren't friends after this. He didn't seem so friendly."
"I fear my son is being misled.." Ranor says in a sad voice, his face adopting a troubled expression that is so like the one Ranol often wears. "Balur and his ilk are trouble, lass. You must be prepared for what she might try next. Likely she will continue to press these ridiculous stories, and if any trouble finds her she'll convince her father to throw money at the problem.. Everything will be brushed beneath a rug and where will that leave you?" He shakes his head slowly, his gaze on the stone under their feet.
[Siv(#24218)] Abruptly, Siv stops. "She'll throw money at it?! So she'll ruin my reputation with lies _and_ then she'll make things worse! I...." Siv stutters for words, anger bubbling over. "I will kill her. I swear it...."
"It is their way.. And for some reason they seem to have an interest in my son. I fear they are using him, but when I try to speak to him about it he grows angry. I look at all he has achieved and it pains my heart to think that my sister's husband may drive him to ruin." Ranor slows to a stop a moment after her, looking back with a solemn face. "It would not be the first time Balur took advantage of family."
The woodcarver is quiet for a long stretch of time, his gaze wandering over the green walls of the Zinbar cavern. "Mark my words, Siv.. The original crime will be forgotten. Thari attacked you and none will speak of that in the end."
[Siv(#24218)] Siv's eyes narrow as she studies Ranor more closely. "What do you mean? What do you expect to happen? And what experience have you had in the past to indicate such?"
"I do not wish to upset you further.." Ranor says with that sad expression returning. "Better for you to simply walk away from this now. Perhaps then you will suffer no further misgivings from the daughter of Balur."
[Siv(#24218)] "No." Siv plants her hands on her hips and squarely faces Ranor. "I want to know what I'm up against. What was your experience?"
Ranor runs a hand through his hair, smoothing it back with a hesitant expression. Finally he nods and looks around, then draws her into a dark tunnel with no traffic. "As I'm certain you noticed, our humble family abode is just that.." The woodcarver studies her reaction with blue eyes. "Do you know why my son became a clan-karl?"
[Siv(#24218)] Though she hesitates briefly, Siv lets Ranor pull her aside. "Uh...yes...but no, I don't know....why?"
"It's a bit complicated, but let us say that I found myself in some financial difficulties. While investing I repeatedly met failure and yet my sister and her husband met more and more success. I struggled to find the secret, and begin to discover some alarming similarities between my misfortune and Balur's profits."
Ranor grows quiet for a moment, then continues, "Ranol, consciencous lad that he is, went on behalf of our family to the Thane and worked out an arrangement to serve off some of the debt. I wish he had not, it is not a son's burden to bear. But, Ranol can be easily influenced if he thinks a cause right and just... "
"Now after being on a trip he rather suddenly is close friends with his cousin. He pays visits to Balur's home, he defends -her- after she assaulted you? Thari is charming and has a way of luring in others to care for her.. Look at what she has done for that Frarin fellow's reputation."
[Siv(#24218)] One of Siv's eyes twitches as she listens, a frown growing on her. "I don't know what the circumstances are involving your personal family concerns, of course....nor do I want to know, really." Her expression is slightly sour. "As for Frarin...his reputation? What are folks saying?"
"She accuses -you- of all those rumors.. was that what she said? Surely she's going to try and use you to cover up her own transgressions. It's all terribly obvious, lass." Ranor strokes a hand through his beard, his gaze lazily wandering around them. "It was probably Balur's idea. Maybe she is with child and they're trying to cover it up.." The woodcarver gives a slow shrug. "I only wish that my son wasn't involved. He's suffered enough on Balur's behalf... But I must be gone. Be careful, Siv."
[Siv(#24218)] "With child?!" Siv mouths the words but doesn't say them out loud. "Thank you, Ranor. Thank you _very_ much." Anger now burning even hotter in her eyes, she turns and heads back into the main hallway--last seen heading toward Thane Ovor's office.
