More Advice from Farkin

Ranol pays Farkin of Clan Zinbar another visit for his opinion on things
Sort Date: no date set
Location: Dwarven Camp - The Last Homely House
Game Date: May
Description: Ranol really shouldn't be looking for more advice. He really really shouldn't be getting more advice from Zinbar, but Farkin seems to know what he's talking about and the newly made huskarl has found himself lost again. He can't help but give a wary glance at the meadow, watching for that playful bear he encountered the other day.. an odd incident.. that was. Soon enough he's at the dwarven camp and walks slowly, blue eyes searching for Farkin.

[Ovor(#20753)]   Farkin is spotted soon enough, speaking with the two other Huskarls that had come with the Thane Zinbar. He seems to be lecturing them on the finer points on keeping their kit clean and maintained (must give the right impressions, after all), which sends the Huskarls off to ensure their kit meets the standards of the Huskarl Captain. Farkin merely grunts, shaking his head slightly.

Ranol wanders over, keeping quiet as to not interrupt. The dwarf is looking much as he did the first night they spoke, a faint expression of stress on his face but the determination is there as well. He wouldn't be here if he didn't want to improve his service to Braldor.

[Ovor(#20753)]   It doesn't take long for Farkin to notice Ranol. A slight twitch of the face beneath the beard is all the sign the Stoneheart gives to the other Dwarf's presence, though he turns his attention to him soon enough. "And how have your duties been going?"

"Well. Very well. I want to thank you again for your words of wisdom, cousin." Ranol gives a short bow, smiling. When he straightens again he studies Farkin carefully, trying to judge if he's proving an irritation to the captain. "I hope I am not taking you away from your own by paying a visit.

[Ovor(#20753)]   The Huskarl Captain shrugs slightly. "Nothing pressing. The Thane is off trying to get the Elves to trade or purchase our leather goods, leaving me with little to do but look after his Huskarls. As for the wisdom, it was no problem. We are equals, now, and it simply will not do to have an equal fail in his duty."

Ranol grins faintly at the mention of being equals. Ranol is still growing used to the change in rank, it seems. He's quiet for a moment, then ventures to ask in a careful tone. "I was hoping that I might ask your opinion on another matter, if it isn't too much imposition upon you." He rubs the back of his neck, his gaze wandering over the camp as he awaits an answer.

[Ovor(#20753)]   "Oh? What is the matter, then?" The Huskarl Captain arches an eyebrow for a moment before moving to take a seat at a table before the Thane's tent, motioning for Ranol to sit in the other chair.

Ranol moves to take the offered seat, shaking his head. "No problem.. exactly. I'm only wondering, where do you draw the line between your duty and your personal opinions on matters." His brow furrows, "What I mean is, situations of safety and security aside, how involved do you get in your Thane's business?"

[Ovor(#20753)]   "Only as much as I have to. The Thane, if he sees fit, will ask you for your opinions on matters." Farkin frowns for a moment before speaking again. "After all, our primary concern is the Thane's saftey. If you feel secure enough in your position and your friendship to your Thane, you may be able to voice your opinion. I would say the exception is if it something you feel might be a threat to the Clan as a whole. As the Thane does not have advisors with him (at least, I do not believe Braldor to have any), you may need to serve that purpose."

Ranol actually seems to relax as Farkin speaks. "Aye, I thought much the same, but I wasn't sure if it might be construed as a lack of loyalty were I to defer from getting involved in matters outside of security. Of course, it's a completely subjective thing for me to worry about, I suppose, since each Thane likely sees things differently.. " He pauses, then adds with a wry grin. "Still, you have the experience I do not."

[Ovor(#20753)]   A slight grunt of amusement comes from Stoneheart. "It is not lack of loyalty, that is for certain. You are the captain of his guard I would think any matter of your loyalty (as if there could be any doubt with a Dwarf!) is settled. A Thane needs opinions from those around him, especially in the field. While Thane Braldor does not lack experience, it is still helpful to have someone else speak. Though, as you say, every Thane will see it differently."

Ranol nods along as the dwarf speaks, then grins again, "It is more an interest in not sharing my opinion, I guess. I'm certain I can find my own path in this, but I appreciate your sharing of your thoughts, Farkin. I hope I can return the favor some way in the future."

[Ovor(#20753)]   The Huskarl Captain shrugs slightly. "We will see. If you do not think you should share your opinion, do not. Unless, of course, the Thane asks for it." The Dwarf pauses for a few moments before he speaks again. "And, yes, I do believe you shall find your path. Everyone does soon enough, your duties will become natural, and you will learn the subtle dance that is your standing with your Thane."

Ranol smirks, "Yes.. soon enough, I think." As he stands, he runs a hand idly through his black hair, wondering if other clans have problems such as Thari and Frarin and their problematic relationship. "I won't take up any more of your time, thank you again, cousin. Have a good afternoon." Unless Farkin stops him, he'll move on, heading off to see what his own clan-karls are up to.

[Ovor(#20753)]   The Huskarl Captain merely nods before standing, moving off after his Huskarls, no doubt to check on how they are getting along with their gear.
