Bear Wrestling
Ranol wrestles with a bear (Mobeorn) and Rochwen watches.
Sort Date: no date set
Location: The Last Homely House
Game Date: May
Description: [Mobeorn(#22365)] Spring is in full bloom here in Imladris, with shrubs, trees, and flowers are bursting with bud or even full leaf. Far in the distance from the front lawn are some trees, the light of dawn coming over them now, illuminating thepeacefulness of it all. There's a shape moving through the trees. Dark and brown and large.
Inside the tent: Rochwen says, "Peoples!"
Ranol is just stepping out into the yard, looking to be heading in the direction of the dwarven encampment. He pauses when he sees movement in the trees, his blue eyes watching curiously to decipher what is off in the distance. He's wearing his armor today, but of course is still lacking weapons.
[Mobeorn(#22365)] Whatever is moving among the trees, it is taking its time--moving a step or two, pausing, moving again. It seems large. Brown. The growing sunlight glints off it just slightly, as if it is sleek.
Ranol abandons his previous task for the moment and begins walking towards the treeline. He watches intently as he approaches, squinting against the bright sunlight shining into his eyes.
[Mobeorn(#22365)] It's... a bear. Possibly twice the size of a normal bear. Sleek brown fur covers its formidable flanks, but its paws, head and ears seem a bit too large for its body, as if it is not yet full size. It lifts its head, brown eyes bearing down on Ranol as he approaches.
Ranol stops dead when he identifies the creature, alarm washing through him. He reaches his hand down reflexively for his sword, but of course it isn't there. The dwarf begins backing off again, not wanting to tangle with the animal unarmed, slowly taking one step at a time to avoid startling the creature.
[Rochwen(#30925)] Quick sounds, coming down from the north towards the front yard, that might sound very much like...hoofbeats? It would seem so, for there is a dark, sleek gray mare trotting slowly down the path. Keeping easily astride the mare's back is the elleth Rochwen, looking very much at home, despite the fact the horse wears no saddle or bridle, no harness of any kind. There are only a few glass beads woven here and there among the horse's multicolored mane.
[Mobeorn(#22365)] The bear continues to stare at Ranol. Can bears grin? This one shows a set of very white, sharp teeth toward the dwarf--and then his head turns slowly at the sound of the approaching horse. He doesn't move, gazing at horse and elf. Toothily.
Ranol is still backing up, a wary expression on his face. He hears the hoofbeats, and turns to look after he sees the bear take an interest. Will Rochwen be able to see the bear in the treeline from her approach? Ranol isn't certain and lifts up a hand to wave while calling a warning. "Stay back! Bear"
[Rochwen(#30925)] If Rochwen cannot see the bear, the surely her horse can. The mare comes to a quick halt, muzzle held high in the air as nostrils flare. Rochwen frowns, and clutches at the bit of mane she hold as her horse half rears in the air, coming down with snort. The mare manages a sort of backward sidestep, even as the elleth hears Ranol's warning. Blue-gold eyes snap up, wary as their gaze falls upon the bear.
[<#22365>] There is a low rumbling sound from the bear's belly, but it's not a growl. Those pointy teeth are still bared to the dwarf and there's...a twinkle in his eyes? Could that be? "" Again a sort of rumblign noise and a snort, along with bear sounds that sound nearly word-like. But the bear turns toward horse and elleth. ""
Ranol doesn't speak bear, and wouldn't expect to hear a bear speaking, regardless. He keeps a careful eye on the beast, but it hasn't acted overly hostile yet and he'll continue methodically backing off. Whatever it's doing, Ranol is quite content to let it continue. It's springtime.. the creature is probably out frolicking and looking for fun.
[Rochwen(#30925)] At the sounds coming from the bear, Rochwen frowns and tilts her head. Her horse, whose ears have been back and her posture threatening, relaxes a bit. Ears move forward with interest, even as the elleth slides down from the mares back. She watches the bear carefully, before slowly approaching, thoughtfulness in her eyes.
[<#22365>] Ranol's retreat seems to egg the bear on--more chuckling-like bear sounds from its belly. "" It steps out of the woods now...and toward the dwarf. The bear is large. Very large. On the other hand, its steps are rather loping--playful one might say, even. And there's that gleam in its eyes, which likely means either it is playful. Or eyeing its next meal....
Focus on the dwarf is interrupted, though, at the approach of the elf. "" It tilts its head to her.
Something fishy is definitely going on. Do elves talk to animals? Probably. The dwarf doesn't seem afraid, just wary, as any smart dwarf would be around a potentially hungry bear. He slows his retreat with a glance towards the now-relaxed elven woman, but keeps a defensive posture in case this creature really is looking for lunch.
[Rochwen(#30925)] Rochwen head tilts as the bear's does, before she comes to a halt a polite and respectful distance away. Her far away thoughts show in her eyes, but then they suddenly alight with interest. She offers a bow to the creature, for she cannot very well curtsey in breeches, and she half-smiles. "I must apologize, for I do not understand your words, my friend," she offers.
[<#22365>] The bear's toothy grin gets toothier at the elleth's curtsey. And then it dips its front paws to her, touching its nose to the ground. Clearly it understands her, if nothing else.
Attention is then turned back to the dwarf, with a gruff sort of snort. The bear, bounds right up to the dwarf, and suddenly there is a large paw swatting through the air, as if to lift the dwarf right up off his feet and into the softly padded ground here! It might seem he is attacking, but if he hits, only teh fleshy pad of the paw would make contact and the blow seems...gentle. Plus, there is what sounds like a laugh from the animal.

Crazy elven lands with their crazy animals. Did the bear just .. bow.. to her?! Ranol is starting to drop his guard, relaxing a bit, and then the animal is swinging it's paw at him. He throws up his arm defensively, but his stance is wrong and the strength of the creature kicks him to the ground easily. He immediately springs into action, rolling over to his stomach to push himself up again, his blue eyes locking onto the bear.
[<#22365>] The bear growls and rolls its eyes. "" Word-like grunts again, but there's no sound of anger in them at all, just some irritation. "" There is the unmistakeable sound of laughter as the bear rushes forward and tries to head-butt the dwarf in the belly.

[Rochwen(#30925)] The elleth's smile widens a touch at the bow, amusement in her eyes, for she clearly knows something. She frowns in surprise as the bear suddenly makes a playful swipe towards Ranol, and flinches slight as it happens. She shakes her head a moment later, and hesitates, wondering if she should step in or not. When she doesn't, her mare snorts and decides to, stepping forward slowly, her nose angled low so she might get a good sniff.
The animal is definitely toying with him, and Ranol begins to get a challenging gleam to his eye. It charges at him again, and this time the dwarf holds a strong stance, taking the blow solidly and maintaining his footing. He grunts, but only brings his fist down in response, punching at the bear's thick skull.

[<#22365>] "" There's a grunt from the bear, then another laughing sound. Bear nose crunches against dwarf leather armor, and the bear makes a snuffing sound with his nose--and there are those teeth again, shining quite near Ranol's face. "" is a rumbling noise from him, and then the bear continues with its forward momentum, those bear teeth looking for all the world like they will close on Ranol's neck--but instead he aims for the dwarf's arm, and if he succeeds, he just gums it. Instead of likely ripping the arm out of its socket.

[Rochwen(#30925)] Soft laughter echoes through the yard from the elleth, even as her horse pauses in her approach. A shake of her head, another snort, and the mare stomps a sharp hoof into the grass. "Fainrandis, my lady, leave them," Rochwen requests of the mare. The horse looks to the elleth, flicks her tail in the air, and moves back.
As mildly crazy as Ranol tends to be about thrills and challenges, when those bear teeth are so close that he can smell the breath of the animal, there's a real expression of fear on the dwarf's face. Maybe he's misjudged. Then a moment later the animal is chewing on his arm, and likely putting toothmarks in his leather bracers. Ranol is all buck again and growls. "Stop that!" He swings his arm down again to try and sock the bear between the eyes.

[<#22365>] More laugh-like soudns from the bear--he doesn't bite on the dwarf's arm, but only gums it up, leaving it gooey and sticky with bear drool. And then he pulls away so swiftly from the dwarf that Ranol's blow completely misses his head, coming down on air instead. "" The bear seems to grin at the dwarf from a distance now. "" The bear seems to bow to elleth and horse again.
[Rochwen(#30925)] The elleth laughs once more, and finally moves closer to the bear and dwarf. "I think that is enough of an...encounter, perhaps, my friend?" she asks the bear, her voice light and amused. She winks, and looks to Ranol, "I apologize for asking, but a Healer must no injuries?"
The bear suddenly jumps away and Ranol is left stumbling a step as he regains his balance. He looks at the slimy drool covering his arm with disgust. "Ugh!" Then his blue eyes look up at the bear again with a scowl, but the dwarf doesn't seem angry at heart. There's excitement in his eyes. He's never sparred with a bear before. Rochwen draws his attention, "No no.. I'm fine. Is this a normal occurance in these parts?" He asks as he works to unhook the leather bracer, intending to wipe it off.
[Mobeorn(#22365)] Healing? Injuries? The bear tilts its head to the elleth, and then lumbers slowly over toward her--carefully, brown eyes big and round and woeful. Then....it tilts its head at her, slinking low to the ground, so that his head might--just might--come under her hand. What a suck-up--it wants its head scratched?
[Rochwen(#30925)] Rochwen laughs again, and it echoes brightly across the yard. She pauses a moment before setting a hand on the bear's head, smiling. She glances toward Ranol, and shakes her head. "Not...often," she says, looking as if she might laugh again. She offers no other explanation, though, for her horse has decided to boldly march up and bring her nose next to the bear's.
Ranol rolls his eyes as he sees the bear start acting like nothing more than an overgrown puppy. "Elves and bears.. and Durin knows what else.." He mutters, more for show than anything. Then the huskarl starts walking towards the dwarven camp again as he tries to shake the drool from his bracer.
