Location: The Last Homely House
Game Date: May
Description: [Ovor(#20753)]   Though the Dwarves may be in Imladris, not all stay within the House. Some stay with the camp, making sure their goods are well kept. Amongst those few is the Zinbar Thane Ovor and a decidedly uncomfortable looking Farkin, Captain of the Thane's Huskarls. The both sit on either side of a small table, plates and cups before them, even though a gentle rain falls from the clouds above.

"Perhaps here I can find folk that have decent coin to afford my work." Rumbles the Thane, shaking his head slightly as he takes a bite of some meat or another. "And stop looking so sullen, Farkin. We will have our weapons back as soon as we are on our way." The Huskarl Captain merely grunts. "As you say, lord. Still, after such a time keeping my weapon beside me... I feel uncomfortable without it."

The Thane grunts. "How do you think I feel without my hammer?"

Ranol is feeling equally naked without his weapon at his side. He walks into the camp with an almost worried frown on his face. His short black hair is damp from the rain, beginning to look as unruly as his beard when the guard runs his hand through it. He paces several times, then finally sits down near the others with a small sigh, restless.

[Ovor(#20753)]   The Huskarl Captain nods his head slightly. "Still. We are friendly with them and mean them no harm it would not be much of an imposition for us to keep our weapons..." Farkin shakes his head before taking a drink from his mug, shaking his head. He seems to be about to speak more when he notices the pacing Ranol, frowning a moment.

The Thane catches the frown, however, turning his head slightly. A few moments of silence before the Thane speaks. "You are... Ranol, ay? Of Braldor's guard?"

Ranol looks over, almost startled when Ovor addresses him. The dwarf must have been lost in his own thoughts. He stands again to give Ovor a short bow of respect. "Aye, Thane." He gives Farkin a nod in greeting as well.

[Ovor(#20753)]   "Come, join us." The Thane waves an iron-gloved hand briefly, setting out another plate and putting some food on it while Farkin pours another cup. "What is it that has you out here, might I ask?" The Thane's voice is quiet and rumbling, an eyebrow arching briefly as he asks the question.

Ranol walks over and sits down, "My thanks." He says, having a soft manner of speaking. He doesn't answer the question immediately, thinking it over carefully. "I was feeling restless." He admits finally, reaching for the cup and murmuring a thank you to Farkin before sipping.

[Ovor(#20753)]   "What about?" The Thane takes a bite of meat after his question, followed by a drink from his own cup. Farkin has fallen silent for the moment, glancing around every now and then before picking at his food. "Though," continues the Thane. "It is not surprising. We are getting closer to home, and we are in the mountains now. Or close enough, at any rate. It is good to feel them beneath the feet, no?"

"Yes, very good to feel the stone of a mountain again." Ranol smiles at that, but it fades quickly. "I suppose there are too many thoughts in my head." There's a pause, then the dwarf continues, "I've found a lot of new responsibility and I have not even a weapon to carry for the time. It makes me edgy."

[Ovor(#20753)]   "Oh? What new responsibility have you taken on, then?" Again, the Thane's eyebrow is arched a moment before he nods. "After so much time on the road and having one's weapon near at hand... it is disconcerting to be without it. Especially my hammer... if it has been mishandled, then I shall find the one that did so." This last is grumbled by the Thane.

Ranol glances over at the Ovor, then explains in a carefully neutral tone, "Thane Braldor has appointed me as Huskarl, and chief of his guard." Quite the promotion from previously being nothing more than a rather recluse clan-karl. He takes another sip of the drink, pale blue eyes shifting over to Farkin once curiously before moving on elsewhere. "This is a welcoming place, but their restriction on weaponry feels rigid."

[Ovor(#20753)]   Both Thane and Huskarl Captain pause in their actions before lookingto Ranol. It is Farkin that speaks first. "He has made you the head of his guard? Do not take this the wrong way, but were there no others that were experienced to put in such a place?" The Thane, meanwhile, takes another drink before grunting slightly. "Ay, rigid. But, we are their guests and must abide by their terms. We would do the same in our home."

Ranol flicks his eyes between the two, answering Ovor first out of respect for the man's position. "That is true, Thane. I had not thought of it in that light." The guard shifts his attention to Farkin next and answers with a shrug. "It surprised me as well." Ranol says with a small smirk, "He would hear nothing of my thoughts on the decision at the time. It is what he desires. I am certain he has his reasons."

[Ovor(#20753)]   "Thanes do as they will." This is said with a bare note of dry humour by Farkin, earning a grunt of amusement from the Thane. "How long have you served in his guard?" Ovor, meanwhile, finishes off the food on his plate. "Of course, we probably have better reason than they to have such laws, but..." The Thane shrugs slightly.

"Just over three years." Ranol answers, finally reaching to take a bite of food. He looks at Ovor in confusion, then realizes that the man is still referring to the elves and nods quickly in agreement.

[Ovor(#20753)]   Now it is Farkin's turn to grunt. "Only three years? Strange indeed. Yet, as I said, Thanes will do as they will... yet." A brief sigh from the Huskarl Captain before he speaks again. "Well, the first thing to remember is look to those more experianced than you. Listen to their advice ask for it. If you do not ask for it, they will think you a fool and likely be right. The second thing is to delegate most of the daily tasks to a second until you learn them yourself let him run the guard while you study under him."

Ranol looks up as Frarkin begins dispensing advice, listening closely to the dwarf. There's a flicker of relief on his face as the huskarl seems to be giving sound suggestions, offering at least a starting point for Ranol to work with. "Okay. That makes sense." He's not certain if Frarkin has more to say, and waits patiently.

[Ovor(#20753)]   "You are charged with the life of your Thane it is not an easy burdon, but one that you should be proud to carry. Make sure those under you train hard do not let them slack. Their free time is their own, but you should have them train at least two or three times a week. They may complain, but training has never harmed any one when it is time for the real stuff." Farkin falls silent for a moment, taking a drink from his cup. "Train beside them. Let them see you do it. Train with the Thane, if possible I would imagine Thane Braldor is more skilled than you in weapons, so take any advice he gives."

Ovor, meanwhile, glances at his Huskarl Captain with a slightly surprised look on his face for a few moments, as if he is not used to the other Dwarf talking this much. At least in one conversation.

Ranol has all but forgotton Ovor for the moment, his attention on Farkin as he concentrates on the advice, intent on remembering it all later. He nods along quietly, his only movement that of his thumb idly rubbing along the surface of the cup. He has several fingers bound together on his left hand, remnants of the fight with the troll back at the bridge.

[Ovor(#20753)]   "The most important thing to remember is that you have those around you that will offer their experience if you but ask them. Go over the organization your predecessor had set up and question the other guards. If there is nothing wrong with it, do not change it. If they have complaints, take them into consideration when speaking with your second. Do not change what you do not need to until you get more experience." With that, Farkin seems to have said his fill.

When Farkin grows quiet again, Ranol nods a few times, mulling everything over and committing it to memory to think on later. "Thank you for the advice, cousin. You've eased some of my worries." He says with genuine appreciation. He looks back towards Ovor, "I should probably be returning. Thank you for sharing your table, Thane." The guard rises, preparing to leave.

[Ovor(#20753)]   Farkin merely nods, focusing once more on his food. The Thane on the other hand, nods his head and speaks. "You are quite welcome. Pass my compliments onto Braldor, will you? See if he is willing to tell me if there are any Elves here that would be interested in the leather goods of Zinbar." With that, the Thane turns back to his plate as well.
