Thari Tortures Ranol

Thari patches up the injured clan-karl.
Sort Date: no date set
Location: The Last Bridge
IC Time: Late Night
Description: [Thari(#31038)]
Kind hands had carried Thari back to her bedroll after the troll was led away. She is still the only healer in the group with much experience and so sleep was reasoned to be good for her-- which it was. She passed from simple unconciousness to sleep eventually.

The fire still burns. Several dwarves are guarding the camp in the deep of the night, hours past when Ollie was led away. Thari's eyes suddenly shoot open and she sits up. There is a short groan.

Ranol is sitting alone, a grim expression on his face as he watches the horizon, having little else to do. The ache in his shoulder and arm is a bit too severe to sleep through, a basic sling being the best that the others managed for him while Thari was recovering. When he hears her nearby form groan, the clan-karl looks over sharply in concern.

[Thari(#31038)]
Thari puts a hand to the back of her head and winces. She rolls to her knees and then up to her feet. "Fra--" She speaks and then stops. All dwarves near her are sleeping. She looks about, then weaves through the bedrolls toward a seated figure.

"Do you know--" again Thari interrupts herself, this time with a gasp. "Ranol!" She drops to her knee beside her cousin.

"He got back, he's sleeping.. As you should be, cousin." Ranol answers softly, not wishing to disturb those around him. His voice sounds restrained, either from anger or the pain he's feeling. Or maybe it's that bad bread doing a number on his insides?

[Thari(#31038)]
There is some slight easing of tension in Thari's face as Ranol speaks of Frarin, but she does not move away. "You've your arm in a sling. Tell me what injuries you have-- the firelight is poor to see by. Do you bleed?" She reaches for his arm and gently feels it, moving from the wrist upward.

"No.. no bleeding beyond a few scratches. My shoulder is-" Ranol cuts off with a sharp gasp of pain when she even lightly tugs at his arm, the swollen muscles far too tender after the abuse taken by the troll. "I'm not sure what's wrong with it.. something broken maybe. I can barely move my fingers on that hand." He explains in a disjointed fashion, a bit of a palor behind his black beard.

[Thari(#31038)]
"Hmm," Thari says, frown in her voice. Her fingers reach his shoulder and there linger, feeling, pushing lightly, no doubt causing him a bit of pain. "Ah, your shoulder has gone out of joint. Fairly easy to fix and will feel better when I do." She feels for the knot on his sling and begins to untie it.

Ranol clenches his teeth against the pain as she pokes and prods, hissing sharply more than once. The dull pain was bad enough on it's own. When she moves on to untie the sling the clan-karl manages a weak laugh, "Oh, is that all?" His voice cracks a bit, betraying his attempts to handle it all so casually.

[Thari(#31038)]
Thari releases the sling from his body and runs a hand over his cropped hair. Her voice drops, low enough that none but him could hear her. "I know it hurts, Ranol, and I'm sorry." Her tones have become uncharacteristically gentle. "It'll hurt while I fix it, too, but then you'll be able to sleep."

One hand reaches for his injured shoulder and the other cradles his elbow. She begins to lift his arm slowly.

Ranol doesn't grow worried until Thari gets that calm, gentle tone of voice. That's what clues him in that this isn't going to be a walk through Bree Market. (Although, Bree really isn't all that calm or safe these days..) He sucks in a sharp breath as she rests her hand on his aching shoulder, trying to brace himself for the pain that's sure to come.

As Thari begins to raise his arm agony lances through his muscles and bones, and the clan-karl reflexively tries to jerk away, hissing. He knows that Thari is only doing what needs to be done, but his body seems to think otherwise.

[Thari(#31038)]
Thari shifts her body quickly, putting her legs behind Ranol, one knee jutting up against his back, her other leg curling around him. "Hold still," she says sharply. "Only a moment." She moves with him, continuing to lift his arm as she does so. Eventually, the joint should pop back in.

Every centimeter is agony that stabs through his arm and torso, and this is so much worse than when he was sitting quietly. Ranol finally loses any shred of control he has over his own reaction and screams in pain, likely waking up everyone in the small camp. He thrashes once as she forces the bone back into place, then gasps in relief as the worst of it passes.

Ranol's body shudders a few times as his nerves settle again, and the clan-karl takes several long slow breaths, saying in a quiet, shaking voice, "Don't do that again.."

[Thari(#31038)]
Several of the dwarves roll to their feet at the scream, blearily reaching for weapons. "Go back to sleep!" Thari calls. "I'm just tending to someone's wounds." They slowly go back into their bedrolls, some watching the luckless Ranol.

Thari's hand cups over Ranol' shoulder "You'll be able to sleep now," she says. She reaches for his sling and begins to put the arm back into it.

Ranol is still breathing in a haggard fashion, chuckling softly between breaths. "Oh.. I'm sure." He says in joking sarcasm, squeezing his eyes closed as she jostles his still very tender arm to get it slung up again. He groans softly, the pain still considerable, but at least it's bearable again. "Thank you, Thari."

[Thari(#31038)]
Thari finishes tying the knot beside his neck and pulls his beard through so it might lie above his arm. "I won't do that again as long as you don't let that happen to your arm again," she says with a grin. "Don't use your arm until I say you can, even if you think it'll be fine," she adds sternly, her smile dying. "Is there anything else I ought to look at?"

Ranol may be a bit of a glutton for punishment at times, but her question about other things to look at brings a wary expression to the dwarfs face. "I'm not sure.. it hit my shield pretty hard." He looks down at his fingers, having a difficult time seperating the pain in his shoulder from anything else.

[Thari(#31038)]
Thari follows Ranol's gaze downward. "Ah, lad," she sighs. "You're in for a rough night, aren't you? A moment." She stands and walks away to her things. Soon she returns to him and sits on the ground.

"This won't hurt as much. I hope." Thari straightens a broken finger and quickly binds it against the one beside it.

Obviously Thari makes far more sense of the swollen digits than Ranol did. He looks up at her questioningly, not terribly keen on that repeated tone of voice. That's her 'this is going to hurt' tone. When she returns he watches her patiently, still enjoying the relief in his shoulder. Then all at once the healer is yanking at his finger, sending unexpected pain shooting up his arm. "Ow! What are you doing??" He asks a bit more loudly than intended.

[Thari(#31038)]
"Making it so you'll be able to use your hands again," Thari says crisply and without apology. "Now hold still!" Another finger is straightened and bound. "If you have no more wounds I can let you sleep."

Ranol is anticipating it now, and flinches as she grabs ahold of another finger and sets it proper. He gasps sharply, but manages to keep quiet this time. It hurts, but not like his shoulder does. He frowns as she binds his fingers. "How long will that take to fix itself? It will make my job hard.."

[Thari(#31038)]
"Weeks," Thari answers. She leans away from him now, rolling up what is left of her strips of cloth. "and I don't want you to be exerting yourself prematurely, do you hear me? It happens too often and then you'll need months to heal. Ooh, my head," she mutters the last bit under her breath and reaches for the nape of her neck.

"Well how much is-.. Thari!?" Ranol reaches forward sharply with his good hand, ignoring the pain of moving as concern floods through him. "Are you okay? They said you hit your head pretty hard. Want me to find Eirdis?"

[Thari(#31038)]
Thari laughs and waves her other hand at him. "Hold still! Just a bit of a headache. I just need rest and so do you." She presses her fist to the ground and starts to stand.

Ranol hesitates, not entirely convinced, but he lets his hand drop again to his side, settling again. "Thank you, Thari. We -would- be in trouble without you. I wish you wouldn't get involved in the fights.."

[Thari(#31038)]
This makes Thari hesitate, looking down at her cousin. A moment, and then gruffly she speaks. "You're right. I'll try to do better." Quickly she walks away toward her own bed.

Ranol leans back, convinced that he won't be getting much sleep with the way his arm and shoulder are aching. He'll realize how wrong he was when he wakes up in the morning all stiff and sore.
