A log of a talk with Irfalia as she argues with another apprentice on being a librarian. (est date 2000)
[Rorgan(#19834)]
A look passes between the two old men, as they draw ever nearer the two who argue in earnest. The older of the two men, returning his hands to their hidden place beneath his cloak as he shakes his head, \"Harsh words, Rorgan, for ones so young.\"
The man with greying-blonde hair replies, perhaps a little too loud, \"I\'ve heard worse, old man.\"
From afar, Galdhil has no idea about you either :)
Krisorn heres the tones of anger ringing in the voices that echo down the street. He sighs softly for he has seen enough of that for one evening. He starts though seeing the young woman who is standing arguing with a young scholar. He increases his pace, though the steps fall at the same time as before. Krisorn\'s longer stride taking him closer to the disturbance, and closer to the other pair of men. He spares them a glance before watching Irfalia intently. He glances around looking to see if any of the guard are about before shrugging and calling out clearly, though not overly loud, \"Irfalia! How are you doing this evening?\"
[Irfalia(#29903)] The young man continues, noticing the arrival of several individuals, and disregards them, caught up in his own escapades of thought, \"You know Irfalia, the master likes you nought. It is quite clear he prefers me to your simple little mind games.\" He stares at Krisorn with the interruption in his commentary. \"You know...\" he states angrily, \"the masters see it better that you have your head in a better place, between the covers of a book.\"
Icarus appears at the end of the street making his way up towards the Golden Kraken. On his way up he notices a group of people in front of the inn, but he is to far to recognize anyone. He continues up the street in a faster walk.
Krisorn takes stock of the situation as he comes up to Irfalia and the young scholar. He looks the other man up and down and then dismisses him quite coldly as beneath his concern, \"Irfalia, how are you this evening? It seems that you are up to your eyebrows in angry confrontations this evening.\"
[Rorgan(#19834)]
The older of the pair of men comes closer to the young man who berates the woman, and again that sickly immitation of a smile crosses his face before he addresses the young scholar, \"Here, here, lad. No sense in attacking the defenseless.\" A rasp of a chuckle gurgles in his throat, \"Wouldst thou not spend thy time more wisely in debate with thy elders?\"
Shaking his head at the older man\'s challenge, the younger of the two simply leans upon his cane with both hands and looks upon the pair with more than a bit of concern entering into those sapphire orbs. \"Treat with kindness those whose station is below yours, lad, for one day you may be placed at their behest.\" These words of the younger man are spoken low and slow, without a hint of the challenge issued by the senior of the pair.
[Erinhaim(#20260)] The sun crowns the Ered Nimrais with a golden fire in the North and in the basin of Dol Amroth, above the seaward plains, there are clouds that streak the winter skies above. From the Men Ernil comes a solitary figure walking from the West. His footsteps are widely separated for his legs are long and powerful. The boots he wears strike soundly on the road, harbinging his approach.
He is a tall man, much like many in the Stone Land Gondor, but his strength of body has few peers amongst his countrymen. An air of quiet is about him, as if worn like a cloak. On his shoulders stands one brooding thought as if returning to this place has given him a sudden pause. Hither was it he was brought after being freed from his leagure amongst Haradric desert sands.
From the West, where once his kin were lords, come the man. And like a lord he looks, for there is noble havior in his visage. His dark eyes are filled with a faraway look. He is Erinhaim and has not yet returned to the woods.
Irfalia smiles briefly at a familiar face, looking at Krisorn. \"Hello Krisorn, I am,\" she pauses, \"doing well this evening.\" Her voice falters from the various comments from the young man beside her, apparently struck in silence by his rash and strong comments on her behaviour.
[Irfalia(#29903)] \"As I was saying,\" The young man clears his throat, \"You neglect your duties too much Irfalia, and that will not be tolerated\" He puffs his pipe, \" instead you bide your times with characters like these...\" nodding in the direction of Krisorn. \"Daliances with characters, like these are frowned upon. The book is far more important, and far more comforting then people of these natures. These lessons you will learn in time Irfalia. Oh, yes you will. \" The young man glares at Irfalia forbiddeningly.
Krisorn looks over at the two new men who have joined the pair and then turns on the scholar, his face dark. This nights work have left him little patience for this mornings discussions, \"Characters? Tell me young... sir.. Do you have any character? Or have you lost it all to your books and the words written in days of old to enlighten you to your duties for this day? Have you even taken the time to notice that your books will not tell you all of the worlds experience or have you not yet learned that lesson? A lesson which the hordes of the dark lands or the pirates of Harad would be more than willing to teach you should men such as me disappear from this earth.\"
[Rorgan(#19834)]
Now does the ancient man standing beside the young scholar clear his throat yet again, \"Young man!\" The sickly immitation of a smile grows a bit wider, \"What good is learning history if it cost ye the ability to learn to be alive?!\"
The younger of the two leans silently upon his cane and watches, giving the familiar woodsman a nod, \"We met in Caldur did we not, Woodsman? Or is it Private now?\" He smiles ever so briefly in the direction of Krisorn.
[Icarus(#30063)] Arriving at the inn, Icarus recongnizes some of the people. He waves his hand and greats everyone he knows \"Good day Master Rorgan, It has been a long time since I last saw you. How have you been?\" Icarus looks at the man standing at besides Rorgan and greats him with a bow before turning to Krisorn \"Ah Krisorn we met again, I hope the night has been pleasant for you.\" Looking at Irfalia, Icarus says \"Good Morning lady Irfalia. You are up early after such a long night.\" and then looks at the strange man next to her and nods his head slowly to him.
[Rorgan(#19834)]
\"Ah, private Icarus,\" Rorgan offers the lad a smile, now completely ignoring the young man as more and more people begin to be gathered by the heated words.
The silver-haired man, for his part, ignores the bow of the young soldier Icarus, and focuses his attention upon the insolent scholar, growling in a low, commanding tone, \"Look at me when I speak to thee, lad!\"
[Irfalia(#29903)] In his defense at the onslaught of accusations by various persons he does not know he says this, \"I am very much alive dear sir, in knowledge there lies power, and history has its tale to tell to those that wish to learn it. It is not a matter of living like a bookworm in some forgotten part of a library, it is a matter of consideration to apply oneself to what one does. A matter to be a guard, you must practice the sword, among other things. It is a matter of devoting oneself fully to one\'s occupation, nothing else. And this here young woman does nothing of the sort.\" The young man puffs on his pipe once more.
Krisorn looks over at Rorgan and Yeorl and nods to Rorgan briefly, sightly, \"Private.. It\'s a long story though.\" He turns towards Irfalia and says, \"Tell me. Do you spend time learning the trade you have taken up? That of scholar? Remember that scholarly pursuits require more than merely remembering who said what when.\"
Icarus frowns at the words made by the young scholar \"What good is knowledge if you spend all your time aquiring it and do not use it. It is true that we practice to become better but they are some things that we can not learn unless we experience yourself. In the same way, you can not learn everything from the books, you can only learn them by living them.\"
[Erinhaim(#20260)] Having escaped attention, even for his imposing size, Erinhaim quietly circumnavigates the crowded square. The thought remains upon his shoulders, unthrown, sitting there like a king at court, glowering over the tall man\'s brow. The booted feet sound out his footsteps as the inn he approaches, its giant golden sea-beast spreading out its tentacles above him, looms.
Just before he enters, before a heavy hand is placed upon the door that bars his passage, the dark eyes turn toward the figures in the square. There they spy Rorgan with the old man, and the others he knows not. How easy it is to pass a friend in a mob of strangers. For a moment another thought crawls over the dark brow of the wide shouldered man, vying with the other\'s kingly presence.
In thought he stands there, beneath that garish figure marked in gold above him. He glances once at Rorgan, then at the stones of the courtyard.
[Rorgan(#19834)]
The aged man nods sagely now that he has his response, \"Is there not benefit to be gained by learning about more than just one thing, lad?\" His face is still twisted into something that resembles a smile, as he continues, \"And wouldst thou not better prepare thyself for thy occupation by learning from thy elders? Thou hast lessened thy worth by thy angry words this morn, lad. Thou wouldst serve thyself better sailing upon the great sea than thou hast done with thy sour countenance this morn.\"
Rorgan smiles slightly at this commentary from the older man, and then he nods to Krisorn\'s response, \"I hear that conscription runs rampant in the capitol these days, Woodsman-Private. Will you not be allowed the opportunity to transfer to the Scouts?\" The movements of the large man headed toward the inn does not pass unnoticed by the tailor, though, and he turns briefly, tossing a few words over his shoulder in a quiet tone, \"Sir Erinhaim, so kind was your company on the long plains North of Rohan! Would you be such a gentleman as to send out the serving wench with a tray of toddies?\" A warm smile is thrown in after the words, as his attention returns to the debate between his father and the young scholar.
Irfalia comments, slowly, with a bit of hesitation, \"I try very hard at my duties, Krisorn. Though it seems that minding books is far more than just that. I am apprentice and it is the duty of my superiors to be harsh, just as those who learn other trades must go through the same. It is to become better not worse. In defense of scholarly pursuits I say this, to those that require action instead of thought. Knowledge does require action, its seems it is one\'s place to go forth with what one has learned and use it to others benefit. I must admit though, it seems that it is very hard for people to listen to tales of the past to learn not to make mistakes of the future.\"
Krisorn guffaws and shakes his head, \"I\'ve yet to meet a young man who has learned from the mistakes of the past. And there is great truth in the fact that there are old warriors and there are bold warriors but there are very few old bold warriors. People seldom want to hear stories about the old warriors and more about the bold ones, even though a soldier is better off being old. Such is life though. I myself could have learned a bit from the past if I had remembered to keep my mouth shut.\"
[Rorgan(#19834)]
\"Words my son should live by, Woodsman,\" says the elderly man in earnest tones. Again, though, he turns and addresses the scholar, \"Thou art a fool and a pretender, lad, for thy words hold less learning than that found in the commonest of earthworms, and less wisdom than the average dairy cow.\"
Rorgan\'s sapphire eyes flash hotly toward the jibe of his father, but as the older man\'s sharp tongue is focused on the young scholar, his gaze softens and is returned to Erinhaim for a long moment, guaging the response of the man his command had set free in far away Harad.
[Erinhaim(#20260)] After Rorgan\'s facitious request, Erinhaim nodded once as if in quiet reply and he turned to the door as if to enter and be about it. However, as soon as his hand touched the wooden surface of the portal, the tall man paused again, the look upon his face one of heavy rumination. There, before the threshold, the tall man blocked the way into the Golden Kraken for a long moment. However, soon he had swept the fit from him long enough to leave the doorway and lean beside it against the wall.
He stands there now, in similar aspect of his arrival. His shoulders, and their pensive charge, are leaned against the wall of the inn, while the brooding still lords upon its wide kindom, gloating at the world about from its high vantage.
Krisorn looks at Rorgan with a grin as his father speaks a bit harshly of him and shrugs with eloquence of, \'fathers.. what can you do.\' And stands back a little to let the young scholar have a line of retreat from the barbs of Yeorl\'s speach. Krisorn smiles a little and glances around the streets before turning back to look at the scene unfolding here. Yeorl seems to have things well in hand, even if his words may seem a bit harsh even to Krisorn.
Icarus listens to the olderly man as he talks to the young scholar. Turning around he sees a tall man by the door of the Inn. Not recognizing him he bows his head lightly and then turns his attention to the conversation.
[Irfalia(#29903)] The young man who\'s name has not yet been spoken, takes another drag from his pipe in consternation, \"It seem then that we have a differing perspective on a subject that brings upon much emotion. I will not raise my voice to those who my opinion falls on deaf ears. I listen to your opinions like it was my own, I do not accept them but I heed them. You may bark and howl at me like a dog that is in your corner, but I will not play your silly little game. You gentleman view upon me as a lesser man and I can have no conversation with those that do not view me as an equal. As for you Irfalia I expect you to be within the master\'s chambers quite shortly.\" The young man takes another puff from his pipe and departs west towards the castle quarter.
Krisorn chuckles softly as the young scholar takes off on his own towards the castle. He shakes his head slightly and says, \"There goes a very arrogant young man. He may be entitled to it but I seldom like any who look upon themselves with such high regard.\" Krisorn sighs a bit before glancing around and then bringing himself back to the present, \"Oh dear me. I really must be off. I only stopped Irfalia, because the young man wasn\'t seeming to be quite respectful, no matter what position he may hold over you. Even the drill sergeants of the guard hold that kind of tongue lashing for the privacy of the barracks. But if you will all excuse me. I really must be going. Night duties tend to leave me tired and this has been a long night indeed.\"
[Rorgan(#19834)]
Moving away from where Yeorl berates the young scholar, tables now effectively turned upon the lad, Rorgan\'s slow steps take him to a place at the wall a pace away from Erinhaim, and he leans back against the cold stone surface with a few quiet words for that man.
In the meantime, Yeorl still stands near to the young scholar, that twisted version of a smile growing until it engulfs his face as he spits out, \"Thou art a coward, afraid to meet the words of an old man in kind. I will wager thou this: A bottle of the finest Esgarothian wine against your servitude for the period of ten and two months that thou can not best I or my son in a contest of wits.\"
[<#19834>] Rorgan +whispers to Erinhaim, \"... ... ... ... ..., ...? ... ... ... ... ... ... ....\"
Krisorn turns from the small group and heads out to the barracks of the guard to get some well earned rest this night.
Irfalia looks about in frustration, being the cause of such a fuss among everyone, that she immediately departs from her postion against the wall and heads west to resume her studies and duties for the day.
[<#20260>] \"... ... ... has ... ... ... ... ... ... of late. I ... ... ... ... ... ... ..., and ... word ... ... ... the ... ... ... begun ... ... its .... ... ... ... me ... ... chains ... ... ... ... in ... Southron ....\"
Erinhaim looks not at the man beside him as he speaks, his dark eyes flash about the crowd, as the words roll out from his heavy tongue, cleaving the air with booming syllabury. In his deep baratone his words rumble forth.
\"... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... as ... might. ... ... ... ... ... ... hard pressed, ... road ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... my heart ...,\" His eyes flash upwards to the threatening heavens, dark glinting at the silvery winter blanket above, \"This ... ... ..., ... ... ... ... such happiness to ... ... ... ... was ... ... ... bondage.\" Shaking his head, the tall man turns toward the door of the inn.
\"Forgive me, my ..., ... will not ... good company this .... For ... shadows ... too heavy and the ... ... ... to ... ... in ... ... ... that which I ... .... Farewell, ... see ... ... ... ... ... ... ... fortune! Mayhap...\"
