Northern Entry to Buhr Mahrling
A well used wooden dock extends out into the flow of the river with many punts and river crafts moored to its pylons. The dock creaks and groans as it shifts slightly in the current and under the weight of the endless traffic.
Barrels and crates are piled everywhere on the dock, waiting to be moved onto the the river crafts or loaded into the large warehouse to the south.
With nightfall, the dock is silent except for the relentless creaking of the timbers. The only noticable movement is the scurrying of the occassional rat.

Barding Camp
A small encampment. Some stubby tents are erected here and there, and no sigil or house crest can be seen upon them still, though, they appear to be of quality design, beyond what a travelling merchant could own. Great horses can be seen destriers of the most remarkable breed, tall and mighty. Some are a shaggy brown, others a chestnut red. One, finer and more majestic than the rest, has a coat of glossy black, and fierce eyes. A camp fire has been made, within a circle of loose stones. A lone man sits at it, clothed in travelling leathers a great, bearskin cloak flows from his back, and the crest of Karath shimmers upon his breast. His dark eyes watch the road warily, a sword at his hip.

The wounded and weary mount in number. Supplies dwindle, but with the market-place now cleared of Easterling patrols and the ware-house raided, barrels and crates have been hacked and cracked open - their contents a myriad of necessities. Salted pork. Citrus fruit. Whisky. Horse-shoes. Cloth varied from exotic cotton and silk, to familiar wool and linen. The healthy soldiers take stock of the freed cargo, arranging and piling, compiling inventory.
Those less fortunate sleep the restless sleep of fever and infection - but few available to tend to their comforts. Around a fire pit, would be smithies mend the hacked armor of the wounded should they return to their feet before the fighting is done.
What warmth new spring brings to these south-lands offers little blessing. How many more of the Eastern horde yet linger, clinging to their hold on Buhr Marhling?
[Raynar]
Amongst the wounded is one Raynar of Karath, Sergeant of the King\'s Men. Despite being heavily bandaged on his torso and left arm and shoulder, the Karath is either in good spirits or bored, if his quiet humming and tapping fingers (of his right hand) are any sign having been amongst the wounded since returning from a nightly patrol in the market place, that may not be all that surprising.
His humming breaks off into muttered words. \"Get through the battle of the gate without a bloody scratch and then I nearly get killed on a simple patrol. What a horrible way to go...\"
[Lorthrain]
\"The luck of the Karath is fickle, perhaps?\" chuckles a voice nearby, and Lorthrain of Girion appears to have caught Raynar\'s words. Strolling through the wounded men, himself only half-recovered from his own injuries, the Lieutenant arrives by the Sergeant\'s side and looks down with a wince over the bandages.
\"What did you do? Come across a troll?\"
[Elodie]
\"Oh, shush,\" Elodie remonstrates from the other side of the bed as she happens to turn from treating a nearby patient. \"Yer not goin\' anywhere, saves back ta Esgaroth when all this is said an\' done.\" Her chivvying is brisk and purposeful as she looks at the bandages. \"Let\'s us change those bandages, shall we? Put some fresh ones on, make sure nothin\'s goin\' ta set ta festerin\' in there. Greetings, Lord Lorthrain,\" she adds, looking up to the Girion. \"Is there anywhere yer not?\"
[Adom]
Upon a rough but suitable bedroll, wrapped well against the chill, Tavuro sleeps - deeply. A lucky soldier to still be breathing, his good arm beneath him, on his side - naught but thick bandage showing upon the visible right shoulder. Without the whole of his shield arm now, the wound cauterized already once, fresh blood rises to the surface again.
[Raynar]
\"If I did, then I\'d have kept half the lads here up all night regaleing them with my story of brave fighting and bold survival, so I would,\" Raynar replies dryly, brief grin twitching over his face as he turns his attention to Lorthrain. \"Then the story would be all over camp, it would. Alas, no.\"
He pauses as Elodie speaks, snorting in soft amusement before he nods and begins to slowly push himself into a sitting position. \"Ah, but of course. Cannot forget the changing of bandages. Healers always want to get me unbandaged...\" With a soft laugh, he turns his attention back to the Lieutenant. \"Just a lucky Easterling. Not that lucky though he\'s dead, though I have to admit \'twas not my blade that slew him.\"
[Lorthrain]
\"All blades are one in such a purpose, my friend,\" smiles Lorthrain to Raynar, and he nods. \"Yours would have done the same, I have no doubt, were your fellow in the same dire need. And if not a troll, then certainly I have heard of a great bear of a man, though I gather it was Magnus who took him on.\"
Grinning then to Elodie, the Girion nobleman replies: \"And few places are there that should be free of a Lieutenant\'s attention, Miss Elodie the healing tents of his men not among them. But I am glad to see you too. I have hardly the need of my conrades here, though I would glady take some of your attentions also, if you have the time.\"
His gaze travels then to the figure of Tavuro, and there it sobers. A cool, sombre gaze is his now, and he swallows. \"Though such time can wait indeed.\"
[Elodie]
Raynar\'s words bring Elodie\'s smile, tinged with red on the apples of her cheeks as Raynar talks of healers and changing bandages. She keeps her eyes to his wound, though, as she unwraps the sergeant. Once revealed, she looks the wound over critically. Then she reaches into the basin she had brought with her, and carefully cleans the wound site, applies new ointment, and rewraps the shoulder. \"Let\'s leave the rest of the bandages off, the other cuts are healing nicely, best to let them breathe.\" taking up the old bandages and placing them in a sack, she looks up to Lorthrain, \"of course I can see to you...\" she trails off and follows the direction of his eyes. Giving a light oath, the color blanches from under her freckles. \"I may need some help from you in turn, first, though. Could you summon a couple of your brawnier lads, please?\"
[Magnus]
As the conversation is made by the warriors of the noble houses and the healer Elodie goes about her profession, another man enteres the scene. The Royal Warden Magnus\'s has given himself a rough dressing, having been required to learn field bandaging due to his long solo trecks into the wilderness, but it is nearly soaked through. Having bled profusely from the stomach wound he received the night before, the tall willowy man is paler in complexion than normal. Stil however, despite the pain he manages a smile as he moves through the camp towards the assembled party.
Looking to Lorthrain, the Royal chuckles with a wince and speaks \"My stomach feels like its been used as a dwarven anvil.\"
[Adom]
An attendant of too few seasons, same as the limb-less squire, approaches Tavuro\'s make-shift bed. He stirs none as she leans forward, wiping beads of sweat from his forehead. Shaking hands cover her eyes as long dark locks fall over her face. Perhaps playmates in youth - games that will never be replayed. \"Sleep away, Tavu,\" she whispers, wiping a single rolling tear from her nose, \"I have not the heart to wake you, nor the will to burn you - but soon I must.\"
Sitting then next to him, she moistens a clean rag with cool fresh water from a nearby basin. Folding the cloth in half, then quarters, she rings excess water onto the dust and sets it upon his brow to cool fevered dreams. Her eyes close, her head nods - the work of this war taxing all, and so Aleia finds a moment\'s sleep herself.
[Raynar]
\"Let them breathe, hm?\" Echoes the Karath Sergeant as his eyes, glinting with amusement, flick back to Elodie with an arched eyebrow. \"Well, if you say so. You\'re the healer, so you are.\" With another quiet chuckle, he turns his attention back to the Girion. \"Mastiff I believe, rather. But, then, \'tis all a bit confusing, so \'tis, given how much I was bleeding at the time. One of the Wardens I know that, at least.\"
At Magnus\'s entry and arrival, Raynar grunts in amusement. \"Could be worse. Could always be worse.\"
[Lorthrain]
Nodding quietly to Elodie\'s request, the Girion lord moves as though to exit the tent, but is met with the arrival of Magnus. Bowing his head he manages a grim smile as his eyes survey the Warden, ere at length he nods in approval. \"You\'ll live,\" he nods, with respect. \"And that\'s no mean feat, considering. I will need a minute of your time, along with Mastiff, if you have it spare after your treatment, Magnus?\"
[Magnus]
When the responses are made to his statement, Magnus simply shrugs and nods. \"Yes. I know. I merely was wishing to have a professional examine my stomach wound and put a clean dressing on properely before I went back into the town.\" The Royal Warden now surveys the scene around him and sighs. \"How is Mastiff? I have not seem him yet this day. Hes a tough old nut. I don\'t know anything could crack em proper.\"
Finally registering the words of the Girion lord, the young man nods simply and says, \"As long as it doesn\'t interupt the patrol schedule, we can talk.\"
[Elodie]
Rising from her seat next to Raynar, with intent to move on to Tavuro, Elodie takes one look at Magnus and her eyes narrow. \"Who\'n\'world bandaged ya?\" she demands. Her kit and the sack are set down beside the empty cot next to Raynar, and she jabs an impersious finger downwards. \"Sit. It may feel like it\'s been hit with a dwarven anvil, sir, but it looks like it\'s been used fer elven target practice.\" She glances up to Lord Lorthrain, \"I\'ll still need those men, sir. Just not as quickly.\"
[Adom]
Heavy and deep come the breaths that lift the warm blanket off Tavuro\'s torso and over the side. Aleia\'s shoulders jump, as the wool falls upon her lap and wakes her from but a moment\'s respite. Slowly she drags it back over his body, covering as well the unsightly nub where arm should be. With a sigh and shake of her head, slowly back and forth, the single word \"No\" repeating in her thoughts, she stands then and shudders. Wandering then towards the flaps of their field-hospital, Aleia steps outside, seeking the hot and well-tended fire of those tinkering loudly just beyond the canvas.
[Magnus]
When the healer begins issueing commands, the Warden\'s eyebrows raise in surprise. A simple grin decorates his face as he moves to take a seat next to Raynar. \"Still alive, I see?\" He nods quickly to the man. \"Elven target practice, eh? I wonder if that would\'ve been more pleasant.\" Grinning, the Royal Warden looks back to the Girion lord. \"So whats next on the list? More journeys into the town? I\'d love to see what other surprises they have for us.\"
[Lorthrain]
\"Your patrols can wait, Magnus,\" replies Lorthrain, his brow furrowing slightly, ere he adds: \"There are plenty more men uninjured who may take them up whereas I must hear your report in person. I shall be in my tents. Elodie, those men shall be with you shortly.\"
And with that the Girion lord strides away.
[Elodie]
Rolling her eyes, Elodie unrolls Magnus\'s bandages, and then looks at his wound, shaking her head as the scab comes off with the bandage. Folding up a cloth, she forms a compress, and holds it to the wound. \"Just sit still fer a bit,\" she tells the Warden. \"Lord Lorthrain answers ta me when it comes ta injured, an\' until I say yer done, he\'ll wait. We\'re goin\' ta stop this bleedin\' clean ya up so it doesn\'t get infected, if it\'s not already, an\' put a fresh bandage on ya ta keep it clean.\" Suiting actions to words, her fingers are nimble and efficient on their work.
[Magnus]
As the lord of Girion responds, the Royal Warden nods. \"Understood.\" His attentions are drawn away however as the healer Elodie makes to remove his bandages. A brief grunt follows as the scab tears away from the blade wound in his stomach. \"I see.\" As the various maneuvers are performed during the healer\'s processes, the willowy man winces on occasion but does not cry out despite the great pain he must be experiencing currently.
\"How are my brothers doing? I could not see the fate of those who went with me into the field last night.\"
[Adom]
From outside a lady\'s voice mingles questions with answers from the soldiers. Their words are low until suddenly a chorus of \"Aye,\" and \"Oh!\" mingles with the rustle of armored men standing. \"But leave the fire?\" Aleia requests firmly, a quieted response following from the men. The lady returns then to the confines of her duties, forthwith to the stockpile of supplies. She crosses her arms, lips taut, eyes narrowed as she readies for the business yet to come. \"Hmmmf,\" she exclaims curiously, now stepping back through the tent-flaps and to the glow of fire but steps past the entry.
Tavuro rolls now in his sleep, onto his back. The cloth falls from his brow, but the fevered sleep holds him deep in its dangerous arms.
[Raynar]
\"Oh, aye, still alive,\" replies Raynar to Magnus, flashing a quick grin. \"Takes more than an Easterling to kill me. This time, at any rate.\" The Karath shrugs his uninjured shoulder slightly. \"Just wished it made a better story I shall have to rely on the tale of the battle for the gate, so I shall, until the next time.\"
[Elodie]
Glancing over towards Tuvaro and Aleia, Elodie\'s eyes go to the woman. She takes a breath, then turns back to Magnus. \"Any of yer friends that came here from last night\'re still alive, an\' mostly restin\' well.\" She rises to go to a nearby table, picks up a cup of water, and an empty cup. Going back, she pulls a vial from her bag, and pours some of it into the cup. \"Drink ths, and drink the water,\" she tells him. \"Wait half an hour for it ta settle, an\' ya can go make yer report. Just watch yerself. Tends ta make ya lightheaded fer awhile. But it\'ll make sure ya don\'t get worse sick down tha road.\" Then she turns back to Raynar.
[Magnus]
Chuckling, the Warden replies. \"Well they can\'t all be good ones, I suppose.\" Turning back to the healer before him, he nods and accepts the vial. No sooner, has she told then he is downing the unknown substance and next moving onto the water. \"I will, madame. Thank you.\" Standing abrumptly, Magnus smiles as he receives a head rush in response. \"Down the road is the important stuff and I plan to stick around at least for a while longer. You have my thanks. Be well.\"
Turning quickly, he nods to the man Raynar before making his way out of the tent and onto the abode of Lorthrain.
[Adom]
Approaching her leader Elodie, Aleia waits for the soldier to speak his thanks, at last informing her, \"Twasn\'t too tough to get them tinkerers to move away from our tent as you requested. Although, sorry I am that I forgot ya for a bit.\" She looks across her shoulder to where Tavuro lays, no words of excuse but distraction pained upon her face.
With the night deep, tired eyes look again to the healer, \"Do you think I might take a pillow whilst we wait for the Lord\'s men to arrive? The fire remains ready outside.\"
[Raynar]
With a nod to the departing Warden, the Karath Sergeant falls silent (well, mostly silent he has taken up his humming again) while moving himself back down from his sitting position.
[Elodie]
Elodie nods to the Warden, and then to Raynar. \"I suggest tryin\' ta\' get up an\' get yer own food. But if anythin\' starts bleedin\' again, ya let me know. Don\'t be a hero, Lord Lorthrain doesn\'t need dead heroes. He needs live soldiers, ya hear me?\" Her tone is tough, but her eyes looking down to his are warm.
When the other healer addresses her, she turns, and looks the girl over. Although she may not be a lot fresher herself, she lays her hand gently on the girl\'s shoulder. \"Go get some rest. Wake up Sandra, an\' I\'ll have her help me,\" she says quietly. \"Ya shouldn\'t stretch yerself too thin. Unfortunately, there will be more ta do, not less, in tha days comin\'.\"
