In Archet Village
What you don't know about Muirgheal might hurt you.

Few in Archet (or Bree) know much about this woman and where she originally came from with her rather exotic looks- even after all these years of her presence in the little village. She turned up in Bree long ago, at the age of seventeen, and took up a semi-permanent residence in a room at the Prancing Pony. Back then, she was always seen around Bree with a dark-haired woman called Uannve, though she eventually married the Ranger 'Seeker' and started a family with him. He hasn't been seen around Archet for years; suppose she did away with him somehow? It doesn't seem to matter much to her, as everyone knows she lives in the house her husband built with that Uannve, and they're as good as married.

Muirgheal is a somewhat nervous woman in public, standoffish with strangers and always armed, though she's calmed down some over time. She sometimes disappears from Bree and Archet, but she's never gone long enough to miss.

Just like the lady herself, her children flit in and out of Archet- the inseparable Caoimhe and Alfirin, and Caoimhe's twin brother, Elfaroth. All three are currently absent from the village, however, gone off somewhere into the wilds together.
Description
This young woman, scant years out of her teens, is like an image that summer dreamt up. She has a radiant tangle of long white-gold hair that reaches down over her backside. The front strands have been braided on either side of her head, and are joined in the back. Brighter even than her hair is the 'crown' she wears- a circlet of a bright silver chain, punctuated at small intervals by small pearls and azurite that blaze the way towards a small charm which rests against the smooth, pale skin of her brow: its shape is that of a serpent, cast in white gold.

Her wide, fey eyes are a vivid hazel. Her brows are neat, long arches much darker than her hair, drawing an observer's attention to her eyes. A few sandy freckles dust her cheeks and the bridge of her small nose, like kisses from the sun. Her lips are pale pink and perfectly shaped.

On her lean frame she wears thin, well-fitted deerskin breeches that hug what few curves she's got, and a long-waisted hunter green tunic. The sleeves have been tailored to just above her elbows. A belt around her waist holds the scabbard of her long sword and the smaller sheaths of a pair of daggers.

The scars on this woman are few but notable. There's a small pink crescent-moon about an inch under her right eye. The palms of her hands show heavy scarring from a knife, old white lines crisscrossing over her skin. Her left calf, when visible beneath trousers and boots, is mostly scar tissue, and the twisted way the wound has healed suggests little medical care and a tousle with some large animal.

History
There are few in Bree and its surrounds who haven't heard the name of Muirgheal, the mother of the twins Caoimhe and Elfaroth, and their younger brother, Alfirin. However, there are fewer who would recall the name of Seeker, the mysterious father of these three. He's been gone for years. Still, there are those who recall Muirgheal, pregnant with the twins, disappearing for some time before returning with that Seeker fellow, and their subsequent attempt to make a home for themselves out in Archet. Seems they wanted to raise their family in private.

Well, it wasn't too long after their return that Muirgheal gave birth again, and then Seeker was gone, leaving her to care for the three small children. Oh, it's not like she didn't have help; soon she was back with that Uannve Oth, a woman as mysterious as Seeker, if not more so. They say Muirgheal and Uannve are practically married, unnatural as it may sound, and it appears to be true; they raised the children together, punctuated by the occasional absence of Muirgheal from Archet, though she has always returned.

Like the rest of the family, the land of Caoimhe's birth is a mystery. For the most part, she was raised in Archet by her mothers, Muirgheal and Uannve, and she was close with her brothers- especially the younger- Alfirin. In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who'd spotted Caoimhe out of the company of her younger, blonde-haired brother as they roamed the lands surrounding Bree together- hand-in-hand, or at least always close enough to touch. As would be expected of any of Muirgheal's get, she grew up strong, fast, and fierce, though her skills extended beyond those of the blade; it was not uncommon to see Caoimhe with a little leather bag full of parchment, stubs of charcoal, and other materials for sketching the townsfolk or the wilds.

When Caoimhe reached the age of fifteen, she vanished from Bree; she was off to the distant land of Dale, and there she remained for several years that she will not speak of. Yet the wild moors are in Caoimhe's blood. Eventually, she left Dale behind her, and with a merchant caravan, she crossed the Misty Mountains and traveled back to her homeland.

Now, back in the company of her family, she seems to have renewed her fierce closeness with her younger brother- a closeness that seems as unnatural as Muirgheal and Uannve's union. She and both her brothers have taken to roaming the wilds of Eridaor in a little group, and the trio is not looking to make friends- rather, to secure their freedom and carve out an existence in this often-dangerous corner of the world.

This goat is both well-fed and hard-worked, by the look of him. A wether of a fine Alpine-stock, he is a lovely shade of tan, with black markings along the sides of his face, and upon his legs, down to his hocks. His eyes, with their strange and curious square pupils, are a deep shade of amber. His horns curve gently towards his back, and are held back -- his nose forward, frequently sniffing.

Upon his back is a light pack, held in place by a series of leather straps. It does not seem much to hinder his movement, but occasionally, the contents might clank or clunk as they shift.

He wears a shirt of canary yellow, though more often than not, this is smudged with some kind of dirt stain or bits of twigs and leaves. Black suspenders hold up a pair of brown trousers than appear to be hand-me-downs (and just a touch on the large side). Does he wear shoes? Only when the weather requires it, and even then, it is most likely a pair of soft-soled doe-skin boots that have been broken in for some time now.

History
Tommy Wheelock was born to Dahlia Rushlight and Paner Wheelock. His mother was a small-time herbalist, originally from Archet. His father is a traveling merchant, and the two met at the Archet Market, where he was once peddling some goods that had arrived from the south (pipeweed and the like). The two were quick to marry, and a small residence was established in the town, though Paner was gone more often than not on account of his livelihood.

They had a mostly happy existence, and greater joy was brought by the arrival of their first child, Tommy. However, the birth was difficult, and Dahlia's health never fully recovered. It was only a year after Tommy's birth that Dahlia fell into a terrible fever, and passed away. Paner, utterly heartbroken and unable to provide the presence of being necessary to raise a child alone, brought Tommy into the care of his Rushlight relatives, where he lives under the watchful and loving eye of his great-aunt Ethel, and his cousin Braden, who he follows around like a small dog when he isn't hunting in the Chetwood. Paner visits on the occasion that he is in town, and shows the boy love -- but after the death of his wife, spends most of his time on the road.

This girl has a soft, alluring face with dark, teasing eyes. Her dark, mid-back-long hair is thick and wavy, arguably too much for her, and nearly kept tame with an array of pins and black ribbons. Her equally long bangs are likewise swept to one side and the other and pinned there. Her nose and mouth are of the typical variety and girlish enough to suit her vanity. Her chin, child-like cheeks, and soft jawline finalize her appearance as unmistakably feminine.

She wears a very long, black dress with a tall neckline; snug sleeves bunch down her arms and cover most of her hands, while the dress bunches in small folds across her hips, waist, and bust; the observant might note bare toes peeking from beneath her dress' full lengths, and threadbare portions through the dress' hemline.

A curious TRINKET glitters in Synoah's hair at the back of her head.

History
Born where the wilds could touch her life daily, and where the "White Mountain" was always in view, Synoah learned to love nature, the howling wind, warm layers of bundled clothing, dreadful storms, and the playful camaraderie of her closest brother, Nalen.

What imaginings he and she shared in their early youth, romping through gales from one stand of trees to another, have bound them steadfast, especially through the loss of so many of those they together held dear.

Following her parents moving them to the Shepherding Village, Synoah's detachment there was a derivative of longing for her former life, and in Bree that detachment continued.

Thus, life has thus wholly changed for Synoah: from self-made subsistence living to poverty; and a large family with married siblings and relatives to living among foreigners with a single brother and parents.

This is a lithe woman of average height with long, waist length brown hair which she keeps pulled back from her face in a single long braid tied off with a bit of leather cord. Her eyes are a boggy green color shot with touches of hazel like moss on a bog. They are a little small and surrounded by short brown lashes. Her brown brows are arch upwards then slanted straight across and a bit downwards. She has high cheek bones and a tan complexion with freckles speckled across her nose from many hours in the sun.

She wears a pair of light buckskin pants. Her top is a sturdy green blouse with a demure oval neck line and long, tight sleeves that are cinched with leather strips at her elbow and wrist. On her feet she wears a good pair of sturdy brown leather boots with soft leather soles that end just below her knees.

History
Some say Sammy's the child of the wild mud-covered men or maybe bandits, but that's just pure poppycock. Anyone who's lived around the town of Archet knows that Sammy's little family lived deep in the Chetwood and would come into Archet fairly often when Sammy was just a wee thing. Her father was a hunter and her mother was a herbalist, and their two daughters each learned their parents respective trades. In the end, however, Kalie took more a shine for herbalism, and Sammy became quite the hunter and woodswoman.

Now, as far as anyone knows, Sammy still lives somewhere out in the Chetwood with her sister and her elderly parents. Granted, no one's seen the parents in a month of Sundays, but they're old and maybe can't make the trip into town anymore. Of course that doesn't stop the gossip mongers from spreading baseless rumors about how Sammy did something foul to the pair of them. Actually, no one sees much of the sister either, but, apparently, she's a bit mad.

Sammy's in and out of Bree fairly often to sell game caught while hunting as well as a selection of seasonal herbs that are probably her sister's work. She has a reputation as a rough sort of woman, and most respectable inhabitants of Bree give her a fairly wide berth.

Description
This man does not quite qualify as young, but is still far from old age. His curls of chestnut brown, though soft and loose, retain an untamed quality as they peek out from beneath the confines of his rabbit-fur cap. A pair of all-but-pitch eyes gleam beneath brows that are lifted with a hint of mischeif, and his lightly freckled nose is the only departure from his skin's otherwise tawny and weathered hue. A thick, but short-clipped beard swathes the lower half of his face, and if one were to look very closely, they might note that he doesn't seem to have much of a left ear.

His clothes have seen many seasons, but with a few subtle and strategic mendings, still serve their purpose well. A cotton shirt -- perhaps once white, now dun -- is buttoned over his lithe, but clearly hard-worked, frame. A black leather belt holds up brown trousers that are tucked neatly into his tall boots. These are sturdy, but well broken in with use; the laces tied by long-fingered hands that share those qualities.

In the cooler weather, he wears a dark green woolen cloak pinned at his neck with a wooden clasp. A quiver of arrows with tails of various kinds of feathers, along with a bow, hang across his back; a small skinning-knife from his belt.

History
Braden is the second of two children born to Danton and Ethel Rushlight. In his youth, he always seemed to be teetering about in the Archet wilderness in the most curious of manners-- jostling in bushes, careening about in the Chetwood, peeking down rabbitholes in hopes of obtaining a furry companion. The lad's manner was dauntless, and he would often accompany his father for hunting escapades in the forest, perhaps hoping to someday become skilled in this, Danton's trade. His mother would sometimes worry over his enthusiastic explorations, but was far more pleased that he had a love of life.

This was, in every way, a contrast to his sister. Bryony Rushlight, eight years his elder, was reclused and unreachable in every way. She spent nigh all of her time cleaning, for it seemed to be one of the only things she was willing to take notice of in life. The other was Braden himself. Despite the opposite polarity of their dispositions, Braden and Bryony were indeed an inseparable pair. Taking an almost matronly attitude towards the lad, Braden had the equivalent of two mothers watching over him through his early years.

There was the day when Bryony left, however, to go find a life of her own in the town of Bree. After her departure, there was something a bit more pensive about Braden-- a caution towards those who were unfriendly, perhaps a greater inclination to spend time in the bushes by himself. This continued for a time, and began to worry his parents. Quite obvious to the cause of the lad's doleful mood, they sent him on a sojourn to Bree himself, to stay with his sister for a time and perhaps regain his previous bouyancy.

The venture was a success: Braden snooped about the hedges of Bree with a guileless grin for many years, accompanied by his faithful pet duck, Waddle, with whom he faced many trials and tribulations: a troll attack, a wolf hunt, and a campaign for Mayor of the town not the least of them (and which is often referred to in jest to this day). While Waddle was not elected, the two gained a respectable reputation in the town for a little while, even despite the boy's blatant friendliness to those no-good Rangers. He studied letters and history often with Jonah Thistledown, the lorekeeper, and spent most falls doing seasonal work for the Heatherseed family on their apple orchard in Combe, courtesy of his and his sister's friendship with Elias of that family. Braden has been known to play a mean tune or two on a fiddle as well.

That is, until his late teen years and early twenties, when his dauntless nature brought him into the acquaintance of some of the less savory figures known about Bree. He was seen late at night in dark alleys sometimes, or having a drink with fellows that ought to be avoided, and for a while seemed to have a few more pennies in his pockets than is appropriate for a young roustabout. There was a brief flash of hope for him as he embarked on an engagement and was set to marry Sarah Thistledown, the granddaughter of his teacher Jonah, but the relationship came to a grinding halt over matters that Braden (mostly) refuses to discuss to this day.

Following his fallout with miss Thistledown, the man gained a bit of a scoundrelly reputation among the young women of Bree for a little while, and seemed to be diving deeper and deeper into the murky waters of no-good business, beyond even the reach of his beloved sister. But the sudden death of his cousin Dahlia (who left behind a young Tommy for Ethel to care for) hit him hard, and in a rare decision of wisdom, retreated to his family haunt in Archet to recuperate from his mess in Bree, and start a new and more respectable life among his family members as a hunter under the tutelage of his father.

He has lived in Archet now for seven years, and has rebuilt a reputation as a man of good word and a sturdy upbringing. He is known for raising goats as pack animals that accompany him on his longer forays into the Chetwood, as well as spending time keeping the company of his lumberman Rushlight relatives at the Lodge. Recently, he has been called upon to lead a hunting party to seek out a pack of wolves that has attacked the citizens of the town repeatedly. While he achieved little success, after returning from the woods severely wounded, he soon married Nimah Dearway, and the two have one daughter, Willow.

Description
This woman is of average height. Hair is deep brown, and shines in the light even though it is pulled back into a braid. Holding most of her hair back, yet some strands left to play around her oval face is a leather braided headband. Hazel eyes then peer out, they reflect from her tanned skin though it is the undertone of green that gives them more dimension and life. There then is the freckles, they rest across her nose and over her cheeks, acting as a nice crown atop of ruby lips.

The woman's body is lithe. Wearing a pair of fitted brown pants, they travel down her leg where they meet a pair of darker brown boots. The well worn items finish mid-calf and are tied tight with laces. Over a cream coloured shirt is a snug leather jacket. It is held close with buckles and gives a good ease of movement.

Around her waist is a belt, it holds a pouch, a flute, and what looks to be a carving knife. Slung over her shoulder is a sack, going right to left.

History
Born in the Spring of 1433, Nimah is the third eldest to Ilid and Mary Dearway. She has two older brothers, Merick and Drewin, and a younger sister who had been killed by a wolf, her name was Beth.

To most outsiders the life of this Dearway girl was quiet -- but that is far from the truth. Yes, she liked to adventure about, play in the woods -- which she often did with her long time childhood friend Aruan, but it was her father and his passion for the drink that would keep her closer to home then desired But it was because of that that she turned to her craft, which was carving . It wasn't all that bad in many ways, there was no real violence, that was until one day the drink made him pass out and he neglected to watch Beth and she was killed by wolves on their farm. That was when things turned, and Nimah, just hitting the age of a teen at that time, was left to pick up all the pieces.

Merick had moved out, but Drewin was around from time to time, being a hunter he would be gone for days or weeks at a time. Ilid grew more violent after that incident, and he would sometimes hit her mother, or throw things. He even took a swing at Drewin too, but the man who had became a mute swung back and the two parted and hadn't spoken since. Her parents relationship when downhill, and Nimah had suffered a lot of pain in hurt with watching all of this, and the odd time being subject to vile words and insults. Still she could not part from her family, could not walk away and allow her mother to be alone and hurt, so she remaind to try to fix what could be and hope that it would all change.

These reasons are what held her back from doing what she really wanted in life. Some of it typical, wanting a family of her own (And never allowing it to be the way she had it growning up) but much of it was wanting to own her own shop and sell her carvings and wood work. to be independant, but having to deal with the matters at home (and silently at that, as it was never let on to the other townsfolk) left all her dreams in the dust. There was also a lot resentment to her father who couldn't seem to get his act together.

After all that time, all the pain and loss and hurt the family had indured, there was still more to come. The wolves are relentless and one night she had fallen pray to one. The wolf nearly killed her, it tored of her leg which now causes her to limp. And it killed her father who tried to help out in a drunken stooper. But if it wasn't for Braden Rushlight, who happened to be visting, her life would of been gone as well.

With her fathers death, though sad, there was also a sense of freedom. Not having to take care of her family anymore, to deal with that shame and hurt, Nimah is now able to move forward in her life. Which has had more trials, but, as always, she seems to pull through them and keep going, wanting to make her life better then it was in the past.

She is now married to Braden Rushlight, and the two have one daughter, Willow.

Description
This girl has a small rounded face. Her cheekbones sit high, accentuating her face but giving her eyes a sunken expression. Her hair is stringy and hangs in wisps around her face, thin strands like cobwebs around her face. Underneath her eyes are dark circles that shape the depth of the irises. Most of the time, the chestnut locks fall haphazardly around her face but occasionally, she pulls it back with a black ribbon which trails down her back. Her face is youthful and, were it not for the dark circles, she would be a pleasant thing to gaze upon. However, this feature gives her the impression of being ill or in dire need of rest. Her eyes are narrow, as if she sees the world through a tunnel, but the vision is keen and ever watchful. The irises are a deep shade of green, like the leaves just before they turn the withering shades of brown and gray. Her eyebrows rest above her eyes which gravitate towards the center of her face. Smack center is a small pointed nose which punctuates the center of her face. The mouth is small turning down at the corners. Though the skin is pale and ghastly white, her lips are a natural shade of rose. The girl is tall and slender but, perhaps a bit fragile.

She is adorned in a black blouse which clings to her lithe figure. The sleeves end in a pair of brown leather gloves which are a constant over her hands. Occasionally, she may be seen wearing a pair with the fingertips missing, made of a cheap fabric, though this is not common. Over her head, she often wears a traveler's hood, which hangs low over her features partially shielding her already darkened features. The legs are covered in a beige pair of pants, a black design gracing the side of the legs. The pants disappear into a pair of heavy black boots which end about mid-calf.

History
While her sister was considered a child of bandits, Kalie was always thought to be the child of something much more sinister, but that too is highly unlikely. Those who have lived around the town of Archet know that Kalie's family comes from a place deep in the Chetwood and would come into Archet fairly often when the girls were small children. Her father was a hunter and her mother was an herbalist and both of the girls would fall in their parent's footsteps. Kalie was very different from her sister and so she became the herbalist leaving the woods to her sister.

But there was a reason for this. Not many people would know it but the girls are fraternal twins, meaning they are twins that don't look alike. Kalie is slightly older by a matter of seconds but she doesn't let Sammy forget that too often. However, it was when the girls were very young that Kalie came down with a fever and developed a nasty disease. If it had not been for her mother's expertise in herbs, Sammy most likely would be an only child. Their mother was able to nurse the girl back to health, but Kalie was left with a severe fear of dirt and disease. Having shared the womb with Sammy, her sister seems to be the only one she doesn't consider a threat to her health. So while her sister went frolicking in the disease ridden woods of Chetwood, Kalie stayed home studying the herbs and would soon surpass her mother in knowledge.

But with knowledge comes power and Kalie discovered a darker power of herbs. She learned of herbs that had not only the power of healing disease but of causing disease, as well. People assume the girls still live somewhere out in the Chetwood with their elderly parents. It's been months since anyone has seen their parents, and, even if they are old, the rumors are that Kalie's most likely slowly poisoning them. Or at least, that's how the gossip goes. Kalie has developed a reputation as being a bit mad, if not outright crazy.

Kalie instead chooses to let Sammy go in and out of Bree to sell her herbs when she goes to sell her game catches. These are, of course, herbs of the good kind. There are, after all, some secrets too dark to be shared.

Description
Youth lies evident upon this man's face, hints of strife and determination etched in the fine features, mostly along the lines leading from the bridge of his nose across his cheekbones. His hair is a light dust color, wavy if not curly, uneven and shaggy as a man of the wild. His eyebrows are bushy and high set on his flat forehead. His eyes are craters set deep in his face, the irises overcast and cloudy grey, as if a storm rages somewhere behind the pupil. The nose is long and slender, ending above small mouth deeply shaded crimson. The angle of his chin is adorned with beard, following the curve of his face into a small patch running from his bottom lip to connect with the patchy hanging tuft. He has broad shoulders and a full frame, strength evident in muscles rippling beneath his tunic. The man is thin but far from frail, with commanding height.

The man is clad in typical attire of a Ranger. Covering his torso is an off-white tunic. The fabric is thick enough to protect from the elements but tight across his body so as not to be caught in the fabric if forced into battle. The top lies around his collarbone, the V-necked opening exposing a soft splash of hair. The sleeves are rolled to the elbow and a pair of chestnut colored, worn leather gloves adorns the man's weathered and scarred hands. The fingertips are cut off of the gloves so a pair of soot colored over gloves caresses the man's long fingers. Covering his chest, he wears an auburn leather vest. The edges spill over his shoulders and the front dips in a V along with the tunic. On the point of the V, there rests three small leather adornments, simply complex in their arrangement. On his waist, one finds situated a thick leather belt, about two inches in width. A dark emerald pouch clings to the belt containing only he knows what. His legs are covered in a dark brunette colored pair of pants that are neatly tucked into his boots of a midnight color and made of a dark leather material. They make their way partially up the man's shins. Wrapped around his shoulders, a long grey cloak billows out from behind him, a delicate clasp, a pointed star, rests against his jugular. The bottom of the cloak is soiled with mud and dirt having spent many nights on the cold basin of the wilderness floor. Upon his back, he carries a simple bow and quiver and a swords thumps rhythmically against his left leg.

History
The family of Aruan held their origins in Numenor, descendants of the Faithful. They had settled in the area around North Eriador and it was there they stayed for several generations until the birth of the boy. His mother and father had built a small house in Archet on the edge of the Chetwood forest. The soil here was rich and provided fertile ground. The family was a quiet lot. His mother stayed at home tending to the domestic duties. She had established a small farming area and took care of several animals, while his father spent a lot of time in the woods. It was there that they lived for some time, his father's work apparently keeping them in this area.

From a young age, Aruan felt a connection to the woodlands behind their home. It was not anything unusual for the boy to disappear during his morning chores, only to be found several hours later rolling about a thicket. His mother worried greatly about him sneaking off like this. He did not know the truth of his family, for fear of what trouble such a title would bring upon the boy. His father also worried that the woods may not be the safest place for the child, but he could not bring himself to forbid him from following this path.

It was for this reason that he taught the boy what he knew in the way of weaponry. By the heat of his tenth year, he had learned to swing an axe and skillfully nock an arrow, as well as wield a sword in defense. Aruan's father made it clear that the only time such skills should be utilized was in a defensive situation. After all, peace is the ultimate goal here.

Aruan was also taught the way of the woods. His father began sometimes taking him with him in the mornings, a different spot each day. The days he did not go with his father were often the ones were he snuck out on his own. He loved the woods, a nice break from the town in which he was bore. Sometimes, he would go hunting with his father who would turn to him and whisper the importance of stealth when tracking. Aruan learned quickly and took the lessons his father poured into him to heart.

And a good thing he did. While Aruan's mother did not fear so much after these lessons, she still worried about the boy. Not being very old at this point, maybe having seen just past thirteen summers, he still found moments to slip away from his parents and explore on his own. There was a specific area that the young man was confined to and he had been warned by his father not to go past this point.

As it goes, curiosity piqued Aruan's interest and this generally never ends in anything good. He wandered farther and farther out into the wilderness, much further than he had been before either on his own or with his father. It was on this journey that he would discover his family's secrets. He was wandering the trees when the snap of a twig caught his interest. He paused a moment turning towards the sound. He had had the right mind to bring a sword with him and his hand came to it at this point. Not a moment too soon, neither, because the wolf came at him from out of a nearby thicket and attacked. With raised sword, he fought the wolf. It came at him in an attack, slashing at his throat. The claws ripped through the boy's tunic and, by doing so, pulled the silver-pointed star pendant from his neck. The wolf's attention was drawn to the pendant and the animal immediately backed off at the sight of it.

It was at this time, his father came upon him. Aruan's mother had sent him after the boy since he had been missing for such an extended length of time. His father realized at that point that he could hold the secret no longer and took the boy home to have a talk. Sitting him down, his father explained their bloodline and that he was a Ranger of the North. He had sworn to keep the peace in their land and carrying on the legacy of their kind. With this knowledge, Aruan decided that he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps, as he had followed in his grandfather's. This was how it had been for many generations before him.

With a kiss on his mother's cheek, he left the only home he'd ever known. He convinced his father to take him to join up with the Rangers and it was there that he was taken in and taught their ways. He spent many hours with the lore-masters soaking up what they had to offer. He learned quickly and impressed many who tutored him. He showed extraordinary promise in their ways. So it was, after he completed his training, there was found a need for more Rangers to be sent back to protect the Shire, a series of disturbances nearby calling for added precaution. This is how it came to pass that Aruan was sent back to assist the Rangers in protecting this area, where he now spends most of his time.

Description
A roughly shorn mane of sun-streaked golden hair, accompanied by a carpet of stubble, dominate this young man's features. His eyes -- a steely silver reminiscent of that western isle -- shine keenly beneath prominent brows that are a darker brand of blonde. The hard lines of his nose and lips give him a somewhat surly appearance that belies his youth; a youth made obvious by the smoothness of his skin, which is a rich shade of caramel.

He is tall, perhaps unusually so, and his build has the sinewed, wiry strength of the wild. It would seem that not much heed or care is given to his trappings -- splattered here and there with mud and fraying along the edges that see the most wear. Numerous layers are folded over his torso, which include a black shirt, a plain green tabard, and a brown jerkin. On a small black cord around his neck hangs a (hopefully) beast's tooth. Inclement weather finds him enveloped in a grey cloak of thick wool.

A brown belt houses two sheathed items -- a long sword and a shorter, curved dagger -- in addition to keeping a pair of knee-worn trousers secure at his hips. The pants are tucked into his boots, which are a tightly-laced deerhide in make.

Bree Backstory
Alfirin (known by most simply as Al') is the third and youngest child of two foreigners, Muirgheal and Rhifaroth (Seeker) Seregon-Coruceil. Brought to the village of Archet when only a newborn babe, Al' and his family settled into a cottage, and attempted (perhaps unsuccessfully) to assimilate into the town and the folk that lived there. Seeker, acknowledged by some as a Ranger, made his livelihood as a fletcher of arrows, and rebuilt the small home that his family inhabited. However, it was only a few years after their life had been established that Seeker was said to have disappeared entirely, the circumstances of which are neither known nor discussed. Left with her three children, Muirgheal raised them, though after some time it became apparent that another foreign woman, Uannve Oth, had taken up residence in their home and was also helping care for the children. The family is known to be strange and perhaps a bit secretive, and to have an affinity for carrying swords unnecessarily.

Al' had always kept very close company with his sister Caoimhe, and following her departure over the mountains at a young age with Brev Telartair, he grew increasingly broody and filled with adolescent secrecy. A few pennies may have gone missing here and there in Archet with the onset of this new attitude, but for the most part, his grievances were kept to himself, and he was often home late for supper, if he returned for the meal at all. At the age of sixteen, he too vanished from the village altogether -- some say it runs in the blood -- and there was no sight nor sound of him; few dared to ask Muirgheal or Uannve of his whereabouts. After the better part of four years, he returned in the company of his long-lost sister (some say coming up the Greenway from the south, others attesting to a path from the plains to the east). The two did not stay very long, however, and when they departed anew for the wilds unknown, their brother Elfaroth left the family cottage for the first time to come with them.

Tharbad Backstory
Al', as he is only known in those parts, first appeared in the ruins of Tharbad as a sixteen-year-old boy with a head of offensive blonde hair and a punky attitude. It didn't take long before he started carving a niche for himself among the few vagabonds and nefarious fellows that dared to inhabit the place at all. Swifter than he was strong, and more cunning and snide than most, he endeavored to provide for himself at first by snitching small items of value from camps and wanderers, but soon graduated to more valuable loots of passing trade caravans, and outright theft from other criminals. He was quite handy with a sword, and he gained a small following for a few years, but his reign was eventually challenged by a group of powerful thugs who hailed from Dunland to the south. They were attempting to accumulate wealth in order to bring a tribute to the annual festival at Kierkgard, and once they set eyes upon Al' and his forgoil-esque features, made it their business to exterminate him by any means possible.

Al', however, had other ideas. Though his comrades abandoned him (some even turning against him), he attempted to hold his own against the growing threat, and made one last grand gesture of defiance: succeeding in stealing a great portion of the Dunlending's money and tossing it into the Greyflood from the heights of the city's ruins, one coin at a time. Of course, this victory was short lived. He was soon waylaid by the men, and very nearly met his death as they held him down, and began to brutally stab him -- but the torch-holder's blunder of setting his comrade's hair afire allowed Al' an opportunity to escape, though gravely wounded. He fled Tharbad immediately, abandoning his dreams of thief-lord-dom, headed towards the Swanfleet, and has not been seen nor heard from since.

Description
The twin orbs, flashing and nearly sable in their dark hue, are the first notable features upon the face of the woman before you. They show in contrast to the truly unnatural pallor of the skin which spreads across her cheeks, smooth and porcelain -- save the small, rosy scar that mars the visage just before her ear. Her features give the impression of youth, save for a faint crease at the corners of her eyes that speaks to a deeper wisdom. She would even be pretty, on the rare occasion that she smiled; but for the most part, she bears a look of calculating skepticism. Thick locks of deep brunette are folded neatly into a braid, which is wrapped up beneath the white work-kercheif which encompasses her head.

Her frame, while not extremely slight, is well-formed and has a certain grace to its movements. She stands perhaps lower than the average height of her people, but this is made up for by the steadfast and unyielding demeanor that emanates from her. Her dress, a cottony green interlaced with the occasional blue stitching, hangs plainly upon her. A thin leather belt rests upon her hips, bearing a small pouch of indiscernible contents upon one side; this also upholds the alabaster apron which lies upon the front of her skirts. A pair of dun boots peek out from beneath the hem of her dress, sturdy, hard-soled, and yet with a certain style in simplicity -- seeming much like the woman herself.

History
It was high noon of a warm summer day that welcomed the first child of Danton and Ethel Rushlight into her life; an almost ironic setting for a daughter who was soon revealed to be so cold. The small family dwelled peacefully in the town of Archet, Danton working as a huntsman in the surrounding Chetwood, and his wife Ethel taking to the occasonal study of herbs. It was Ethel who chose the name 'Bryony' for her daughter, having great hopes for the girl's happiness. Yet, within the first few years of life, it became apparent that Bryony was not a reflection of her parents' hopes, always seeming distant and disinterested, even from those who loved her.

Despite this, the pair never relenquished faith in their daughter, always encouraging her towards friends and activities of interest. The fruitless efforts seemed to not even scratch the hardened surface of Bryony's soul. This was, of course, complicated by the strange condition of the girl's ghostly pale skin, which prevented her from spending any significant period of time out in the sun -- and even the short stints were accompanied by many layers, kerchiefs, gloves, and wide hats that often garnered the mockery of other children.

There were, however, two things which Bryony allowed herself to love and devote to unquestionably. The first was perfection. When she set out to accomplish something, she was always precise and efficient in her completion of the job. Few things held enough interest for her to practice this skill upon, but one which she found satisfying enough to while away the hours was cleaning. Danton's household was never less than spotless when Bryony was within it, and she never seemed to tire of the tedious job. While it proved rather convenient for her family, Bryony's reclusion and seeming obsession with such a thing worried them.

Bryony's second love was her younger brother, Braden Rushlight, who's cheerful and ambient demeanor was such an extreme contrast to that of his sister. Why or how this occurred is yet a mystery to her parents, but from the birth of her one and only sibling, Bryony had always taken it upon herself to care, protect, and even spend time in the company of the lad. The closeness between the two was one of the things which kept them heartened for their daughter's cause.

There was, however, a third thing to play a significant role in her life. Avery Lightfoot, the son of one of Danton's fellow hunters, was quite a frequent figure in the household. Being two years her senior, the boy seemed to find an endless amount of amusement in torturing Bryony day and night with things that sprung from her most horrible nightmares-- things that brought uncleanliness to her house and self. From hair-tugging and nicknaming her 'Swab' for her cleaning habits to sneaking slugs into her bedroom, rarely was the girl without some sort of pestilence from him. It was only as they grew older that this prey-and-predator relationship took more of a turn towards friendship, though one would hardly find Bryony admitting to this. However, upon the coming of his seventeenth year, Avery left Archet in search of a life in Combe, leaving Bryony to revert to her solitary and cleanly ways.

It was two years following Avery's departure that Ethel made the suggestion to her daughter that she should perhaps find a way in which to use her sparse interests to find a satisfying life for herself, rather than to forever clean the house of her childhood. And so, despite the lingering ties to her brother, Bryony travelled the short distance from the town of Archet to the more opportune Bree-proper, where she managed to land a very suitable job at the Prancing Pony, where she continues to this day to clean every dusty corner and stained tabletop with her usual fervency.

However, Braden showed signs of a depression after she moved away to Bree, and it wasn't long before an arrangement was made for hm to come stay with her for a time to ease the separation. However, 'a time' became further and further extended, and grew soon to years. Bryony, working both at the Pony as well as part-time in the Healing Houses, saved up enough money to purchase a house in the north end of town, where the two took up a permanent residence together, until he left to return to Archet in adulthood.

She came into the acquaintance of Elias Heatherseed, which developed into a rare friendship between the two. Bryony and Braden would often go to Combe to spend time on the orchards of Elias' family, and one might even have suspected that there were inklings of something more between the two at one point -- but she does not speak of things in that light, and is only apt to reminisce on the currently unknown whereabouts of her friend.

Despite living and working in the bustling and metropolitan centre of Bree Proper, Bryony has never been known to take kindly to strangers or outsiders. If anything, there are few in the Breelands than can give such a scornful eye as she, particularly to those Rangers; though when asked, she does not discuss the matter. Any who come to the Pony in search of hospitality will receive their share of food, drink, and service from her, but woe be to the stranger who expects a smile.

'Bree was the chief village of the Bree-land, a small inhabited region, like an island in the empty lands round about.'

'Passing through, they kept on along to Road for some miles. It bent to the left, curving back into its eastward line as it rounded the feet of Bree-hill, and then it baegan to run swiftly downwards into wooded country. To their left they could see some of the houses and hobbit-holes of Staddle on the gentler south-eastern slopes of the hill; down in a deep hollow away north of the Road there were wisps of rising smoke that showed where Combe lay; Archet was hidden in the trees beyond.'

The Breefolk culture, despite its name, is actually home to humans and hobbits of four towns surrounding Bree Hill.

The Towns
Bree Proper
The village of Bree had some hundred stone houses of the Big Folk, mostly above the Road, nestling on the hillside with windows looking west. On that side, running in more than half a circle from the hill and back to it, there was a deep dike with a thick hedge on the inner side. Over this the Road crossed by a causeway; but where it pierced the hedge it was barred by a great gate. There was another gate in the southern corner where the Road ran out of the village. The gates were closed at nightfall; but just inside them were small lodges for the gatekeepers. Down on the Road, where it swept to the right to go round the foot of the hill, there was a large inn. It had been built long ago when the traffic on the roads had been far greater. For Bree stood at an old meeting of ways; another ancient road crossed the East Road just outside the dike at the western end of the village, and in former days Men and other folk of various sorts had travelled sic much on it. 'Strange as News from Bree' was still a saying in the Eastfarthing, descending from those days, when news from North, South, and East could be heard in the in, and when the Shire-hobbits used to go more often to hear it. But the Northern Lands had long been desolate, and the North Road was now seldom used: it was grassgrown, and the Bree-folk called it the Greenway.

Bree is the largest by far of the four towns situated around Bree hill. Dominating the majority of the hill itself on its southern and western sides, Bree is the typical small town. A marketplace, business district, and residential district make up the sections of the town, with the fourth major attraction being the Prancing Pony Inn by Barliman Butterbur. 'The Pony,' as it is affectionately called by most established residents of Bree, is the center of Bree's social life. Bree is home to both humans and hobbits, with several established families of each.

Bree proper provides a perfect place for the residents of the smaller villages to pawn their wares, as visitors make their way through the larger of the four towns regularly. The marketplace is a frequent stop for dwarves and humans who are traveling through from hither to thither. As the cornerstone and anchor for the entire culture, Bree proper has some similance of government, including a Town Council and captain of the Breeguards. The vast majority of the population of Bree resides in Bree proper, though one might not find it as kind to strangers -or- as safe as some of the other towns.

Staddle
Home to the halflings, Staddle is best known for the fact that everyone who lives there is one of the 'Little Folk." No humans live in Staddle, which provides fairly well for some relief if ever the Bree-lands encounter some conflict between its two species. Staddle is set in the southeastern side of the Bree-hill, and there a group of somewhere between 100 and 300 hobbits resides peacefully. Since they are closest to the main town of Bree, the residents of Staddle make the trip into town more frequently than those from the other towns.

The life in Staddle is very characteristic of a hobbit lifestyle. Lots of gardening, cooking, eating, smoking, playing near the ever-so-safe Staddle Pond, and more eating make up the activities which go on in the smallest burgh of Bree. Though a great many of the hobbits who live there must work like any other modest Breefolk, they tend to take life a little bit easy.

Combe
Combe is a relatively small town on the northeastern side of Breehill. It is located low on the slopes of the hill, and rests just outside the Chetwood forest. Combe is in many ways independent from the other towns, sitting quietly minding its own business, surviving fairly well for a town of its size. There is a small marketplace there, and the burgh itself is the farming center of the Breelands, as there are several large farms, orchards, and herds kept in and around there.

Combe is inhabited mostly by humans, though there is a small hobbit population there as well. Combe residents make their money mostly agriculturally, with the raising of livestock and the farming of crops and fruits.

Archet
Probably the largest of the three minor towns in the Bree-lands, Archet is a small settlement which lies further away from Breehill than the other villages. Archet is a forestry-based town, inhabited mostly by humans. Located just inside the mysterious Chetwood Forest, Archet likes to keep to itself as much as possible, though the political processes in Bree tend to keep a pretty good eye on the financially supportive lumber industry there.

While getting to Archet through the forest may be a trick, once you're there you are likely to find friendly, down-home type people who welcome honest folk and shun those who don't seem to be on the 'up-and-up.' Archet is home to a large lumberjack population; were it not for the massive amounts of wood treated and tended by this small town, Bree would lose a fairly large amount of resources.

Other Nearby Geography
Chetwood
The Chetwood was once part of a vast woodland covering nearly all of Eriador, but since the Second Age has dwindled down to the few remnants that remain, of which the Chetwood and the Old Forest are two. Around the Breelands, the Chetwood is a major source of economic value, providing lumber, hunting, and foraging for the Breefolk; Archet's livelihood is based on this. However, the Chetwood is also known to be a dangerous place, especially in the dark -- beasts roam about, and some of the older town residents and travelers will tell taller tales of things they encountered deeper in the forest.

Other
There is a bit of in-game help for getting around Bree. In certain rooms in the town, you can type one of the following to get directions to that place.

+market - the marketplace
+smials - the hobbit smials
+jail - the Breeguard Headquarters and Jail Cells
+houses - the Stone Houses
+healing - the Healer's House
+pony - the Prancing Pony
Not every room has every command; sometimes directions can be found by reading the room description, or by continuing to follow the last direction given.
Economics is a keystone in the culture of Bree! Geographically, Bree stands at an old crossroads, and was historically a bustling center of trade and travel. Though this has dwindled somewhat with time, Bree still sees a great share of commerce, both among ourselves as well as with folks from far away.

Breefolk take great pride in their many different trades and crafts! To learn more about different topics concerning the economy of Bree, and how this might inform (or inspire!) your Role Playing, please read up on the following:

Jobs
Jobs are important in Bree -- we try to RP our jobs as much as possible. It adds variety to our RP and also gives us a new perspective on our characters. The following is a list of jobs for Breefolk to play. However, it is important to note that the Bree LAs are very open to other ideas - this is not a comprehensive list of professions, and we almost never turn a new idea for a job down, so if something you have in mind doesn't appear here, ask us about it anyway!

Jobs List
*Citizen (housewife/
husband, busybody,
gossip, retired senior
citizen, child)
*Craftsman (carpenter,
smith, woodworker, thatcher,
mason, builder, glassmaker)
*Farmer
*Cook
*Hunter
*Messenger
*Stablehand
*Tinker
*Tailor
*Barber
*Butcher
*Shopkeeper
*Breeguard [1}
*Gardener
*Servant
*Lumberman/woodcutter
*Bookkeeper
*Healer
*Merchant
*Maid/janitor
*etc.

[1] Guardsman is usually a part-time non-paid public service position filled by folks who already have other jobs.

Keep in mind that when you choose your job, your RP is not restricted to your worklife. More often it simply comes up in conversation with others or as an excuse for having certain skills or other traits. Combat and travel is rare in Bree, even in jobs such as messenger, hunter or guardsman. But you will not miss out on fun TPs or RP if you choose a more mundane-seeming profession. Bree, being a small town, needs a good spread of jobs among citizens.

Certain positions within the town are not considered feature roles (although they may be held by an FC). These ones are the high-ranking jobs such as Head of the Towne Council, Head Breeguard, Master Merchant, etc. If a job title holds a certain amount of stature, chances are it will require some work to attain. Since responsibility goes hand-in-hand with the role, we would prefer that they be given to players who have demonstrated some dedication to their character.

If you would like to have a position like this and the role is unfilled, consider thinking of a plot for your character. For example, if you wanted to be the head of the council, suggest running an election TP. In all cases, promotion must have some IC reason behind it. Talk to BAD if you would like more details. Additionally, BAD will talk to you if they consider you a good candidate for such a role.

Frequently asked questions concerning professions:
*Is this list complete? Can't I be something else? Of course! Just talk to an LA to see if your idea is feasible.
*Are there any requirements for any of the jobs? Yes. In order to be in the Breeguard, you need to be combat-registered. See +breeinfo combat for more information. Healing can be enhanced by +heal abilities, but this is not necessary to enjoy RPing being a healer. If this is something you are interested in, +mail BAD and ask about it. This also requires combat registration.
*What about the town's more important roles? Can I be mayor? See +breeinfo promoted for information about promoted positions.
*As a merchant, what can I sell? It's likely that you'd make your own wares, so consider being an artisan or craftsman of some kind in addition to simply selling things.
*What about artists or performers? Can I be one of those? I don't see them on the list anywhere. Yes, you can, but the region isn't terribly prosperous and probably wouldn't be able to support art for its own sake. Consider having another job and being an amateur painter/musician/poet/author/etc. on the side or as a hobby.

Guilds
Guilds are a loose association of people with similar skills or jobs. In Bree, there are four: the Merchants Guild, the Craftsmans Guild, the Farmers Guild, and the Healer's Guild; and they wield political force as well as economic.

*The Merchants Guild includes shop owners and traders.
*The Craftsmans Guild is, as suggested by its name, composed of those who make things.
*The Farmers Guild applies to owners of farms either crops or animals, or both; as well as hunters, trappers and the like.
*The Healer's Guild is for healers.

If you feel that more than one guild might be appropriate for your character, choose the one that is your primary work. For instance, a carpenter might open a small shop to sell his own work: he would belong to the Craftsman Guild not the Merchants because his primary work is carpentry. He could be a carpenter without the shop.

Ranks
There are an unlimited number of apprentices and journeymen allowed in the Guilds, but only one master in each. These four Masters, along with Barliman Butterbur (as owner of the only Inn in town), the elected Head of the Council and the head of the Breeguard, make up the Town Council. (There are still apprentices among the people who do not belong to a guild, but no journeymen.)

How Guilds Work
*The guilds set the prices for their members' goods. These prices may be determined after much arguing in a Town Council meeting, or they may be set arbitrarily, but beware of rebellion. ;) They also set the level of quality that will be accepted for selling in their stores.

*The guilds assign masters of known quality to teach apprentices joining the guild.

*They choose which of their members will take on certain tasks; for instance: which merchant will be in charge of this year's trading caravan to the Shire.

*They collect fees for membership, in return guaranteeing guild-members a fair price for their goods, instruction from other, more advanced members, and some amount of assistance in the event of catastrophy. This pool of fees is also what is used in the event the Council decides some public work, such as repair of the Gates or upkeep of the Great Eastern Road, is necessary.

Named stores in Bree will be assumed to be owned by members of the Merchants Guild. Kiosks, or portable shops, such as the pipeweed wagon and Smokey Blackthorne; will be assumed to be freelance. Stores will have set prices, which are higher than wagon-shops; but may also be assumed to have a guaranteed quality. What you get at the shop will vary wildly. You may pay much less and get an excellent bargain, or you may go home with trash. Guilded stores can buy only from other guildmembers, and guildmembers can only sell to Guild-owned stores.)

General Pricing Guidelines
As a baseline, non-guildmembers selling an item may RP receiving half the posted price for that item shown in a shop. Apprentices of the guild receive 60% that price. Journeymen receive 75%. For guildmembers, half of the difference is given to the guild. Don't panic, you don't have to have a math degree to play this. ;) Something in the proper vicinity is just fine, we won't come hunt you down if you're off by a penny or two.

As an example: You are a farmer selling carrots. Apprentices and Journeymen of the Farmers Guild may sell to the General Store. Using the price currently on the menu (100 cp), an apprentice will receive 60% of that - or 60 cp. He will then pay 5 cp (half the difference between the 60 cp he got for being an apprentice, and the 50 cp a nonguildmember would presumably have received) to the guild and keep the rest. A Journeyman would receive 75%, or 75 cp; and pay 8 cp to the guild. These prices can't be changed except by the guildmaster.

If, however, you have chosen not to belong to the guild, you must sell your carrots either to one of the non-guild shop owners, or directly to the customer. If you sell to a shop, you receive a base price of half the posted price (50 cp), plus whatever you can bargain for. :) If you sell directly to the public, you get whatever you can con them into paying. And, of course, you pay no membership fee. So you may end up with more money that a guildmember, you may end up with less, or you may end up not being able to sell your crop at all.

Joining A Guild
If you want to join a guild, you may choose to be either an apprentice or a journeyman. This should be based on your character's age and skill. Generally, younger characters will be apprentices, and older ones will be journeymen. But this isn't set in stone. If you are older, but changing jobs, be an apprentice until you learn the ropes. Feel free to ask the LAs when you are submitting your history (or any other time) if you're not sure which to choose. You can either RP joining the guild, by RPing with any member who is a journeyman (or the master); or, if no one is available, you can simply +mail bad-bb asking to be titled appropriately. The titles look as follows: Jeweller, Apprentice Craftsman; or Baker, Journeyman Merchant, etc. If you join the guild as an apprentice, the guild will assign you a master who will teach you the trade you have chosen. And the guild will decide when your work is of appropriate quality to move up to journeyman

.
If you decide not to join a guild, your title will simply be Jeweller's apprentice, or Baker, etc. Apprenticing is still the most common, indeed, almost only, way of learning a trade. Boys and girls apprentice themselves to someone more experienced. When they have learned all that their master can teach them, or their master feels they have reached a reasonable leve of skill, they are no longer an apprentice, and can either set up in business for themselves, or continue working for their old master, only for pay instead of knowledge. There is no particular test or standard that you must reach to end your apprenticeship, as there is in the Guilds.

Should I Join One?
You do not need to belong to a guild. There are both advantages and disadvantages to doing so. Here are some of each to help you in making up your mind.

*Advantage: Guildmembers are guaranteed a price for their goods.
*Disadvantage: The guild sets this price and you cannot change it.

*Advantage: The price guildmembers receive is generally higher than non-guildmembers.
*Disadvantage: Some portion of this increase must be given to the guild as a membership fee.

*Advantage: The guild offers free instruction from more experienced members. Hence, you will likely learn more and faster.
*Disadvantage: Non-guildmembers are free to attempt to negotiate their price higher when selling.

*Advantage: You are guaranteed that your crops, or crafts will be sold.
*Disadvantage: You have to sell them only to stores which belong to the Merchants Guild.

*Advantage: People may be more inclined to buy from a Guildmember, knowing that the Guilds guarantee the quality of all work sold under their name.
*Disadvantage: You might be an apprentice for a long time, if you are a slow learner, or if someone in the Guild hates you and continually says your work isn't up to standard. Remember, this is political as well as economic. :)

*Advantage: You are guaranteed someone to teach you whose work is also of a certain quality.
*Disadvantage: You aren't allowed to choose your own master, and if you are assigned to someone whom you hate, you're stuck with them.

Money
While it is entirely fine to merely role-play the acquiring and exchange of money with your character, here in Bree, we also have a system in place that allows you to use +money as well, for an exhanced economic experience! If you do decide to use +money, below is a guide to how to effectively interact with the systems we have in place to make it a viable and fun experience for everyone.

+Money
First most important thing: RP. Everything we do here is to make RPing more fun. So get out there and do it! Next most important thing: Spend your money. ;) You will get more. Trust me on this one. Ok, now that's out of the way and you're waiting for me to get down to it and actually say something useful here. Here goes.

The 'bank' is in the Common House. You receive a 'payday' once a RL week, and you must be IC to collect it. At that rate, you will accumulate those pennies pretty quickly. Please spend them. :)

The command to give someone your money is: +give fred=9 cp (or GF or whatever you want to be giving Fred.)

The amounts given out by the bank are intended to reflect a character's job and status, but if you feel the amount isn't accurate, feel free to let BAD know. (It /will/ be lower than you would actually be making at that job in this time period in a culture similar to Bree's. This is because you can't log on every day and only RP buying food and getting new clothes. ;) Your salary is adjusted to reflect this.)

People who are playing children or destitute characters still receive an OOC 'salary'; consider it the allowance your parents might give you, or money you manage to get from begging.

*Incorporate buying things into your RP. Having a scene in the Market? Buy an apple pie from the bakery and treat your friends.
*Spend money between yourselves. If you and Elias have a bet on over when it will finally snow over 3 feet this winter, and he wins... +give him his winnings! If you RP picking someone's pocket and they don't notice, remind them to +give you what you stole. If Renulf the Rich hires you to watch over his horses (Sorry... that's MY job, you can't have it, this is just an example!), refuse in a huff until he actually pays you that money. And then be sure and go out and spend it again. :)
*NPC the clerk who waits on you. Think of going to an old-fashioned store; it's an interactive experience.
*Use the buy/sell messages that are pemited to you as part of your scene. If you buy potatoes for your mother to put into her special stew, and the clerk just hands you a bag to fill; RP hunting through the bin for the biggest ones and gloating over the bargain you're getting.
*Everyone needs to eat, drink, and have a place to sleep. If you live in your own home, you don't need to pay rent, but what if the roof springs a leak and you don't have any nails? What if your hammer breaks while you're pounding in the shingles? Maybe your wife wants new curtains and has sent you off to get her the material.
*Maybe you don't live at home, but instead are renting a room from a friend. (Here seems a good place to interject the following comment: if your character would ICly be spending more money than you can find places or people to actually +give it to, you can always ask OOCly for BAD to recycle it back into the bank. This is assuming that you are actually trying to make this thing work and not just hold enormous amounts of money that ICly would have been spent. ;) And we promise we won't use it to bribe several Nazgul to kill that pesky Strider... )
*Tools break, clothing wears out and needs patching (or replacing). RP having holes in your favorite dress and then RP arguing with the seamstress about how much it's going to cost to buy a new one. If you're feeling creative, hire her to actually sew you one... (the game will never know the difference and it will cost you the same number of pennies - just don't forget to BUY the finished dress.)
*People like presents. Buy them some. Girls are fond of ribbons and combs, I hear, and boys like pocketknives or whistles, among other things. Buy your mum a new cooking pot if you're feeling especially rich.
Once again, the single most important part of making all this work is to use it! Don't just log on, collect your salary and then spend the rest of the time counting how many pennies you have. Use the examples above and find even more creative fun ways to spend. :)

Breefolk culture is an expansive topic, and there will be overlap between these articles and the ones on the main menu. However, these topics are particularly helpful in guiding the creation of your character and to inform your RP for the most thematic "bree" experience. These are also great jumping-off points for starting scenes or coming up with plots. Does your character give the stink-eye to traveling strangers, or seek out pricey goods from dwarves? Are there upcoming holidays that you might celebrate with your family? Have questions about what kinds of tools you would use for an IC construction project? This is the place to look for answers.

Appearance
Physical
Humans: According to Tolkien, the humans of Bree were "brown-haired, broad, and rather short." Keep this in mind when you write your human's description-you don't have to fit it perfectly, and there's plenty of room for variation within those bounds. You should stay away from a) Being tall, dark-haired, and grey-eyed, as those are Dunadan characteristics or b) Having blonde hair and blue eyes. As far as heritage goes, Bree humans are distantly related to the Dunlendings, noted for their dark hair.

Hobbits: Most people have a better idea of what a typical hobbit looks like, but if you don't, here's what Tolkien says, in brief: Hobbits stand between 2 and 4 feet tall, usually toward the lower end of that range, but are not as broad as dwarves. They have curly, usually brown hair on their heads, wear no shoes. "Their faces were as a rule good-natured rather than beautiful, broad, bright-eyed, red-cheeked, with mouths apt to laughter and eating and drinking."
Keep in mind that although these are only guidelines, if your appearance is too unusual, you'll get some strange looks from people ICly.

Clothing
When creating a wardrobe for your Bree character, think 'simple.' We're not too sophisticated, and don't have sewing machines, so avoid tight clothing and daring styles. Skirts and dresses are long; think ankle-length. No zippers; most things will be fastened with buttons or laces.

For fabrics, 'homespun and practical' would be the bulk of what was worn by Breefolk: cottons, wool, linen and leather, with those of greater means procuring velvet, silk or brocade from merchants trading in Bree. We do have dyeing capabilities, so don't feel like you have to stick to brown or black; but do remember that dyes cost money - with blues and scarlets being the most expensive and rare - and be reasonable in what you think your character could or would wear. The average Breelander is not given to frippery or flashy dressing; there aren't many occasions to show off!

Men: Most wear waistcoats/jerkins or vests, jackets or cloaks, shirts with buttons and loose pants/breeches with belts, and/or suspenders/braces, caps.

Women: Almost all wear dresses or skirts and blouses, laced bodices, aprons (sometimes several of them, layered over each other), petticoats, and shawls or cloaks. Older women are more likely to wear more clothes layered; young girls might just have a simple dress or pinafore over it.
Families
"The Men of Bree seemed all to have rather botanical (and to the Shire-folk rather odd) names, like Rushlight, Goatleaf, Heathertoes, Appledore, Thistlewool and Ferny (not to mention Butterbur). Some of the hobbits had similar names. The Mugworts, for instance, seemed numerous. But most of them had natural names, such as Banks, Brockhouse, Longholes, Sandheaver, and Tunnelly, many of which were used in the Shire. There were several Underhills from Staddle..."
If you like to know more about one of those families, simply type +breeinfo <familyname>, and if you have decided on which family you like to join, set your family name accordingly (see +breeinfo C4). If none of these families appeal to you, you may choose to invent your own family name. In this case +mail BAD with a short history of your family.

Also, before choosing the name Butterbur, Goatleaf, or Ferny, please send a proposal to BAD explaining how you would like to be related to the character in the books.
Holidays
[this information credit of Wikipedia]

The calendar that we use in Bree is mostly based upon the Shire calendar, with two differences:
Bree still uses the King's reckoning of years for the Third Age, which can be calculated by adding 1600 years to the Shire Reckoning date (So, 1424 S.R. translates to 3024 T.A.) The latter date would be used in Bree, though most would be familiar with both dating schemes.
The names of certain months and holidays differ slightly in Bree, though the months and dates they correspond to are the same.

The length of the year is 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, 46 seconds, with 12 months, but all of 30 days. Five additional days were added to create a 365-day year. The months followed the lunar cycle.
Summerdays
The Summerdays, known in the Shire as Lithe, is the celebration of the summer solstice. It falls between Lithe, the sixth month of the year, and Mede, the seventh month. In most years there were three Summerdays. In Leap-years there was a fourth. The summerdays are a time of great feasting and merriment. Summerdays activities might include such things as large picnics by a pond, with swimming; contests of various natures (or, for children, field games such as sack races or crack the whip); dances; displays of musical or artistic projects; special markets; and sundry.

Yule
Yule celebrations lasted six days in total, including two days before and two days after the Yuledays. This six-day period was called Yuletide. It was a time of feasting and merriment. Breefolk might decorate their homes with candles and lanterns or boughs of evergreen and holly. The burning of the largest log that one can find is also customary for Yule. Other fun activities might include the making of fermented holiday drinks, or, always a favorite: fun in the snow!

Diplomacy/Cultural Attitudes
"The men of Bree belonged to nobody but themselves; but they were more friendly and familiar with Hobbits, Dwarves, Elves, and other inhabitants of the world about them than was (or is) usual with Big People."

Bree stands at a crossroads and is a natural gathering place for travellers passing through, though there's fewer of those than there used to be. Still, if you're lucky (or unlucky!), you will get to ICly interact with player from a wide variety of cultures across Eriador, and sometimes from further off in Middle-Earth. Here's how most of us view Outsiders: your character's opinions might differ very slightly, but you should try to stick fairly closely to these guidelines.

Shirefolk - We're usually on good terms with our western neighbours, and trade with them for pipeweed, amongst other things. The Shirefolk, being peaceable hobbits, have never caused us any trouble (though they may not be able to say the same for us.) Bree hobbits regard Shirefolk as colonists - it's /our/ claim to be the oldest settlement of Hobbits in the world, after all, founded long before the Brandywine was crossed - still, some Bree hobbits have Shire relations.

Dwarves - Parties of Dwarves can often be seen journeying on the Great East Road, going to and from the Mountains. Although they may be a bit gruff, Breefolk generally like them because they bring money and goods and once rebuilt the South Gate. They can be rowdy on occasion, though.

Dunlendings - Our southern neighbours. We share some very distant heritage with the Dunlendings, having common ancestors who migrated north from the White Mountains. We occasionally receive their merchants, but otherwise regard these uncouth southerners neutrally. Their troubles are of no concern to us.

Rangers - These mysterious wanderers loiter around Bree and say very little. We regard them with suspicion - aside from their silence and height, it's rumoured they have strange powers of sight and hearing, and can speak with bird and beast. Oh, they can tell fine tales when they've a mind, but we don't befriend them.

Isendrim agents - We don't know that these folk are agents. To us, they're just other humans from around here or the lands down south, travelling merchants and the like. A suspicious-looking and rather ugly man has, however, sometimes been seen in the Pony...

Yfelwydan humans - Although not really a group in particular, these humans sometimes cause trouble and things go missing while they're around. Some are outcasts from Bree or have a history here; others we don't know. May be mistaken for Rangers.

Other humans - Occasionally we'll get a caravan or visitor from some strange place like Gondor or the other side of the Misties. Strange visitors are taken neutrally and judged by their own actions.

Elves - Breefolk rarely travel east (the lands are empty and the roads dangerous), and the Fair Folk are seldom seen by us these days. For some, Elves are becoming the stuff of legend: fragments of old tales and half-forgotten stories. If Breefolk do encounter one of those elusive Elves, we'd be polite but distant - after all, the business of the four villages is our main concern. Events outside our borders don't mean much.

Orcs - The Orcs of the Misty Mountains and foothills rarely make it to Bree, mostly due to the Rangers' control - but we don't realize this. To us, Orcs are the goblins of fairy stories, evil, twisted ... and far removed from everyday existence.

Trolls - In 3026, there was a major troll attack on the Breelands. The culprit is now dead (RIP Lou) but he managed to cause a great deal of damage to our South Gate. There has also been a troll encounter in the fields outside the North Gate. Trolls are not fun, but dangerous, and they eat our livestock and sometimes our people.

Wargs - Eat sheep. Not good. Rarely seen around Bree.

Travel
Travel Within the Breelands
The following chart shows travel times in hours between the towns in the Breeland, based on a Breeman on foot travelling on the road. For hobbits, multiply the times by 1.5. If going by cart, multiply by 2/3. If very old, young, or otherwise impaired, adjust accordingly.

The variation in here occurs due to different routes that may be taken and the fact that Bree is not flat! For instance, one walks downhill to get from Staddle to Combe, but uphill going the other way. Please take the terrain into account when RPing travel between towns and see +breeinfo towns for more information about each location.

Walking -- Most commonly, about 2.0 to 2.5 mph (24-30 minutes per mile) can be maintained. If you're pushing yourself a bit harder, you can likely maintain a pace of 3.0 to 3.5 mph (15-17 minutes per mile). Short bursts of faster speed could be achieved, but not likely maintained by anyone unused to walking all day. This also assumes that you are travelling solely on a well-maintained road. If you are off the road, your speed will be drastically reduced depending on the sort of terrain. Slogging through a swamp, you may only make a few hundred yards in a hour.

Riding -- Ponies: 3 mph, walking. 5-6 mph, trotting. 11-12 mph, galloping. Keep in mind that you would not be able to keep up more than a walking pace for long periods without killing your horse. Assume that over a distance, a lone person riding a pony would be able to go approximately half again as far as a person on foot. Also, these figures presume a single person, not greatly burdened, travelling alone and able to set their own pace. A group will go at the speed of the slowest member.

Travel Outside the Breelands
Bree is a community largely concerned with itself - not really worried about seeing or participating in events in the outside world. Some amount of travel is necessary to maintain relations with 'neighbors' of course, but 99% of all Breefolk would never leave their home -- because they WOULDN'T WANT TO. The few of us who are PCs can be the unusual few, but it is far more thematic to never want to leave home. Bear in mind that if you travel outside of Bree, people in Bree will look at you funny and think that you're maybe not quite right in the head, and certainly not entirely trustworthy.

We encourage plots involving travel if they involve travelling in a group somewhere nearby; for instance, a trading caravan to the Shire. But we don't need to travel to meet and RP with folks from other cultures, because they come to us. :) At one time or another, there have been members of the Arnorian, Dunlending, Yfel, Shire, Erebor and Ered Luin, Isendrim, Mithlond and Imlad cultures in Bree, as well as Gollum and Gandalf.

Another thing to keep in mind regarding leaving the Breelands is that Eriador is, for the most part, a vast expanse of unfriendly wilderness. Rivendell is several hundred miles away, and to get there, you would have to either hike on foot or with a pack animal, and it will take weeks. There are additional things to worry about besides just the terrain; bandits and trolls and orcs, not to mention wolves and bears make travel dangerous for everyone. And especially for the relatively defenseless Breefolk. A group of hobbits and human farmers walking down the Great East Road would look like dinner! If you are attacked or killed, BAD will not intervene except in rare cases. To leave Bree is to accept the possibility that your character might very possibly be killed.

These guidelines only apply to travel outside of the Breelands, though. We always encourage local travel, so if your sister lives in Archet, feel free to go visit her anytime you want.

The following rules govern all travel outside of the Breelands:

*All traveling must be approved by the LAs of Bree as well as the culture you are traveling to.
*The only culture that Breefolk might travel to on a regular basis is the Shire. If your char has good IC reason to journey somewhere else, discuss it with the BAD team. See Diplomacy for information on our friends and neighbors.
*All IC travel must fall in line with IC travel time restraints.
*Travel will only be permitted for characters for whom it is IC to travel.
*Travel is most thematic for Breefolk when it occurs in groups. If, for some reason, you have IC reason to join a group of travellers from another culture remember to ask permission from BAD ahead of time, because you will also need time to get permission from the other culture.
*Travelling within the Breelands is always permitted.

Please note that travelling outside Bree is ICly highly dangerous! There are mean, mean, mean people out there who will not hesitate to kill your character just for walking on their road. BAD cannot and will not intervene on realistic dangers your character encounters while outside Bree.

| 50 mi
| 230 mi
|}

Combat
The word 'combat' is almost a misnomer of any activity involving weapons in Bree. We generally do not have anything which compares to combat in other cultures, but now and again there is a need for drawn weapons, and this file is to help you be prepared for when such times arise.

When there is combat, it is usually brief, more like a cowardly attack on someone than an ongoing fight. Also, we occasionally have the need for a fight with a beast. Combat in Bree is mild compared to other places. We don't cut off people's heads and show them to their mothers. We don't drink blood. We don't fry up intestines (well, you'll have to talk to Barliman about that). We attack; we win or lose; and we generally rue the fact that it had to come to blows. Even the baddies of Bree probably aren't too eager to fight - they are likely much more in favor of robbing someone's house while they are away at work, picking their pocket, or simply bullying their way into money. Blows -are- exchanged, but they aren't long-lived very often, and only in extreme cases do they ever reach the point of someone dying.

Weapons
The Bree Blacksmiths are able to forge axes, bows, clubs, dagger, short swords, and staffs.
Weapons are available for anyone to purchase, though you must have a good reason for your character to have one to be able to purchase one.
Weapons are not cheap - please see the pricelist in the Blacksmith Shop for specifics. If you wish to purchase a weapon, please +mail BAD stating that you wish to do so and giving your reasons.

NOTE: Barehands is likely to be the most often-used choice here. Not many people at all need a sword, and precious few would use an axe for anything other than chopping wood. Bow would probably be used mostly for hunting. Bandits and constables, as well as the few hobbits who would carry a weapon, are the only people who would generally have daggers.
Staffs are probably popular among old men and those who need physical support. Club might possibly be the most thematic (non-barehands) weapon for Bree, as many people, upon being forced to draw a weapon, would completely fail to find one on their person and would likely pick up the nearest medium-sized stick.

Armor
The Armour Smith of Bree can outfit both Hobbits and Humans in all kinds of leather armour. Metal armours haven't been needed for so long in this land that the Smiths have all but forgotten this aspect of the craft.

It should be noted that the average Breefolk never ever needs armour. Purchasing it will require a very good IC reason.

Armour is not cheap - please see the pricelist in the Blacksmith Shop for specifics. If you wish to purchase some armour, please +mail BAD stating that you wish to do so and giving your reasons.

Combat Registration
Being combat registered is not required, nor is it necessary to enjoy your RP in Bree. However, it is recommended, as there are things that you will not be able to do if you choose not to register. You will not be able use the CS system, though you can still RP combat. You cannot +learn any languages (This is not something that most Breefolk would ever do, though.) And you would not be able to be a +healer. No player who is combat registered is required to engage in combat. However, registering will set your stats and allow you to carry weapons and armour, if appropriate for your character.

*A two-week period of activity in Bree is required before you can apply to combat-register. Once you've been around a few weeks and settled in to the culture, you should +MAIL MINION-BB and request a combat-quiz.

*When you receive the quiz, use the files under help combat to answer the questions and submit the quiz to MINION-BB.

*Assuming you passed, a member of BAD will need to run through a quick combat RP session with you, after which you will be approved for combat registration.
Go to the Registration Room, in the Combat Room, in the OOC Room, and follow the directions there.

Language
Much of the following information is referring to hobbits, but can also be extrapolated to and used for Bree humans as they have such a long and close association with hobbits.

* 'The Hobbits of the Shire and Bree had at this time, for probably a thousand years, adopted the Common Speech (Westron). They used it in their own manner freely and carelessly; though the more learned among them had still at their command a more formal language when occasion required.'

* '...the hobbits quickly adopted the Common Speech after they entered Eriador, and by the time of their settlement at Bree they had already begun to forget their former tongue.'

* 'Hobbit was the name usually applied by the Shire-folk to all their kind. Men called them Halflings.' - It seems that the Men of Bree would be an exception to this rule as Barliman specifically called them 'hobbits'.

* '...the divergence between the pronunciation and idiom of the Shire, and the Westron tongue in the mouths of the Elves or of the high men of Gondor, was greater than has been shown in this book. Hobbits indeed spoke for the most part a rustic dialect, whereas in Gondor and Rohan a more antique language was used, more formal and more terse.'

* 'The more learned and able among the Hobbits had some knowledge of 'book-language' as it was termed in the Shire; and they were quick to note and adopt the style of those whom they met.'

* 'In the case of persons, however, Hobbit-names in the Shire and in Bree were for those day peculiar, notably in the habit that had grown up, some centuries before this time, of having inherited names for families. Most of these surnames had obvious meanings (in the current language being derived from jesting nicknames, or from place-names, or - especially in Bree - from the names of plants and trees).' - Surnames in the Shire and Bree

* 'Since the survival of traces of the older language of the Stoors and the Bree-men resembled the survival of Celtic elements in England, I have sometimes imitated the latter in my translation. Thus Bree, Combe (Coomb), Archet, and Chetweed are modelled on relics of British nomenclature, chosen according to sense: bree 'hill' chet 'wood'.'

'In the westlands of Eriador, between the Misty Mountains and the Mountains of Lune, the Hobbits found both Men and Elves. Indeed, a remnant still dwelt there of the Dunedain, the kings of Men that came over the Sea out of Westernesse; but they were dwindling fast and the lands of their North Kingdom were falling far and wide into waste. There was room and to spare for incomers, and ere long the Hobbits began to settle in ordered communities. Most of their earlier settlements had long disappeared and been forgotten in Bilbo's time; but one of the first to become important still endured, though reduced in size; this was at Bree and in the Chetwood that lay round about, some forty miles east of the Shire.'

'According to their own tales they were the original inhabitants and were the descendants of the first Men that ever wandered into the West of the middle-world. Few had survived the turmoils of the Elder Days; but when the Kings returned again over the Great Sea they had found the Bree-men still there, and they were still there now, when the memory of the old Kings had faded into the grass.'

"The Bree-hobbits claim to have been the first actual smokers of the pipe-weed. They claim, of course, to have done everything before the people of the Shire, whom they refer to as 'colonists'; but in this case their claim is, I think, likely to be true. And certainly it was from Bree that the art of smoking the genuine weed spread in the recent centuries among Dwarves and such other folk, Rangers, Wizards, or wanderers, as still passed to and fro through that ancient road-meeting. The home and centre of the art is thus to be found in the old inn of Bree, The Prancing Pony, that has been kept by the family of Butterbur from time beyond record." - Merry

"About this time, legend among the Hobbits first becomes history with a reckoning of years. For it was in the one thousand six hundred and first year of the Third Age that the Fallohide brothers, Marcho and Blanco, set out from Bree; and having obtained permission from the high king at Fornost, they crossed the brown river Baranduin with a great following of Hobbits. They passed over the Bridge of Stonebows, that had been built in the days of the power of the North Kingdom, and they took all the land beyond to dwell in, between the river and the Far Downs." - Bilbo on history of the Shire

Bree Proper has a government of sorts. Everyone gets along for the most part, but now and then some sort of governing body has to settle disputes. The following outlines the government system of Bree, more or less.

Offices
The figurehead and leader of Bree, ICly, is the Mayor, who is the Head of the Town Council. He is elected by the people and serves a specified period of time (OOCly, BAD calls for a new election whenever one is needed) as mediator and chairman of the governing body.

The Town Council is made up of the Guild Masters, as well as Barliman Butterbur and the Head Breeguard. These are the people to speak with if you have any IC complaints involving Bree as a whole.

The Council has a Town Meeting at intervals which they as a group decide. Citizens of Bree are welcome to attend these meetings.

The government is more honored in the breech than in the actuality, with most folks ignoring the official structure and taking their complaints directly to the Mayor.

Current Holders of Office
The current holders of Office are NPC. Feel like running for Mayor?

Crime and Punishment
Mostly this is left up to whoever happens to be RPing the side of Officialdom at the time. Bree does have two jail cells, which are usable. Also there is community service, fines and various other punishments, limited only by the ingenuity (and irritation) of the punisher.
