This is a branch of the ancient and powerful [[House Mormegil]]. Sometimes called the Elder or Higher house because it was begun by the elder heir of [[Elenadar]] the Warden of Harad, [[Narumir]] Cuthalion. Over the long history of this line the house has gone from Wardens of Harad, to Sea Lords, from which the King [[Earnil]] and his son Earnur sprang, and finally to Rangers of Ithilien. There has been a long and bitter rivalry with the Younger House, [[Carmayar]], which over time has flared both hot and cold. The Lord Cuthalion is typically styled [[Marcher Lord]]. 

The mentality of this house is typified as slow to anger, far-sighted, but impatient with those of different temper.

They are known to watch over their ancestral holdings in [[Harad]] from South Ithilien.

==History==
===Kin-Strife===
Elenadar is lord and warden of the Haradwaith.  He has an heir, Adelfaeg.  When the Kin-strife begins Elenadar does nothing, perceiving his task as warden as greater than the conflict of kingship, but he does not support Castamir’s rule.  This secretly enrages Adelfaeg who is friend and ally to the Usurper.  The twins, Narumir and Alcarmir live on Emyn Iar and have reached the age of majority by the time Eldacar flees to Rhovannion.  Alcarmir goes to join him but Narumir remains at Pauriar, seeing little wisdom in the spilling of blood in civil war.  Then, word of Elendar’s death before the battle of Erui is brought to the twins by a messenger loyal to the fallen lord.  He tells the twins of Adelfaeg’s betrayal.  Immediately, they take up Eldacar’s cause.  Alcarmir becomes a trusted advisor and captain, while Narumir leads the men of Mormegil against the Usurper.  The kin-strife ends with the rebels’ flight to Umbar and Adelfaeg being besieged at Annyn Harad.  The twins are divided on the punishment of Adelfaeg and the other Mormegili who have joined him at Annyn Harad.  Narumir sides with the other members of the house, many of whose second sons or younger brothers are with Adelfaeg, while Alcarmir wants to destroy Adelfaeg and his fellows and raze Annyn Harad.  Eventually, the siege is broken and Adelfaeg is taken captive along with many of his lieutenants.  During his captivity, Alcarmir maims Adelfaeg and tortures many of the lieutenants.  

Alcarmir is outcast from the elder members of the society and renames himself Alcarmir Carmayar Mormegil and goes to King Eldacar who gifts him with a captaincy of Minas Ithil and lands in North Ithilien.  Many of the younger members of Mormegil side with Alcarmir and call themselves Carmayar as well, they hold many of the lands around Rhun, which forces many of the other land-holders to take up the name as well. 

In response, Narumir renames himself Narumir Cuthalion Mormegil and many of the elder lords join with him in the south.  He retains his title as Warden of the South and takes up his seat at Annyn Harad, rebuilding that fortress.  He also takes Adelfaeg’s bride to wife, who was kept with him during the siege.

===Exile===
After the fall of Baradmegil and the Annyn Harad on the River Harnen in TA 2904, most of House Cuthalion emigrated to the Lebennin area of Gondor settling in the riparian area north of Pelargir. Later generations spread westward, settling in Lossarnach and Lamedon, eventually intermarrying with the local non-Dunedain population. A close connection with House Cirdain may also see Cuthalion who have resettled on Tol Falas, intermarrying with the local populace there, but they would similarly be of the lesser blooded lines. Although some engaged heavily in the military profession began to resettle in Minas Tirith, the Pelennor and parts of Anorien, there numbers were few due to the traditional animosity with their Carmayar cousins who largely resettled in these areas. The bulk of the high-blooded Cuthalions will be found nearer the Anduin in Lebennin, perhaps due to a lingering racial memory from their Sea-lord era.

===Occupations===
A high percentage of the Cuthalion males will be found engaged in military professions. The higher-blooded lines (those closest to the Line of Lords Cuthalion) especially will be found seeking the Ranger profession in the Company of Ithilien. However, as they were once renowned for being Sea-kings, this may see Cuthalion who ply the seas as sailors or merchant seamen, especially those who stem from lineages that have settled in Pelargir and on Tol Falas. Other trades include gameskeepers and master hunters and other forestry related roles, especially in those lines that have spread Westward, taking roles as leaders of the hunt for the landed nobles of Gondor.

===Personality===
The typical Cuthalion tends to be reflective, even tempered, cold, humorless, and organized if not anal. However, they tend towards impatience with people of different views. This stubbornness has often affected the continuing relationship with the Carmayar line. Disagreements in amongst the Cuthalion often become stalemated when neither party yields.

===Values===
Cuthalions value long-term relationships. They tend to be very proud of their ancestry and heritage, seeking to maintain it with other houses of high-blood. This has seen a split in recent generations with the younger sons taking brides of non-noble lineage, stemming partly from their status as landless exiles. Other traits important to them include candidness, respect, cunning, planning, organization and calculated risks.

:First of the Cuthalion lords. He renames himself Cuthalion, rebuilds Annyn Harad and takes up the ancestral Wardenship of the Haradwaith.  Marries the betrothed of his brother Adelfaeg who slew his father.

;[[Faragil]] (1491 – 1525)
:Second lord Cuthalion, first of the Hunting lords, renowned for his use with the longbow.  He is loved by Alcarmir and in his time much of the love is repaired between Carmayar and Cuthalion. 

;[[Elugh]] (1525 – 1551+)
:Third lord Cuthalion.  He was Captain under Hyarmendacil II, slain by a poison arrow.

;[[Halatir]] (1551 – 1600)
:Fourth lord of Cuthalion, he is lord under the regency of his cousin of the Carmayar line, Belegculthol.  Only takes true lordship under his own name after Belegculthol’s death.

;[[Lachrom]] (1600 – 1663+)
:Fifth lord of the Cuthalion line.  Late in his rule Himlor, the great grandson of Adelfaeg leads a host against the Annyn Harad.  Lachrom is slain in the battle but Himlor’s forces are driven off.

;[[Ruscohyar]] (1663 – 1738)
:Sixth lord Cuthalion and last of the Hunting Lords.  He survives the Great Plague but has no sons and leaves only one heir, Laesiel. She marries Arciryas, brother of Narmacil II.

;[[Arciryas]] (1738 – 1798)
:Seventh lord Cuthalion, he turns the Mormegil from their hunting ways to the ways of the sea.  From this point on the Mormegil become sea lords.

;[[Calimacil]] (1798 – 1869)
:Eighth Cuthalion lord, he takes a bride of Imrazor. They have two sons, Siriondil and Nargohir.

;[[Siriondil]] (1869 – 1916)
:Ninth lord of the Cuthalion line, he dwelt in his youth as a ward of Girithlin.  Marries Nimelwen of the Carmayar line.

;[[Earnil]] (1916 – 1944)
:Tenth lord Cuthalion, wins the Battle of Camp and becomes Earnil II, King of Gondor, leaving rulership of House Mormegil to his cousin.

;[[Alagohir]] (1944 – 1999)
:Eleventh Cuthalion lord and son of Nargohir, Siriondil’s brother.  It is said he foresees the fall of Minas Ithil and flees there three years before its seige.

;[[Elintirion]] (1999 – 2049)
:The twelfth lord Cuthalioin was known as a great navigator.  He takes the sons of [[Rhunaglos]], [[Daeruth]] and [[Damring]], as his wards.  They become enamoured of the Cuthalion wealth.

;[[Halatir II]] (2049 – 2101)
:Thirteenth lord of Cuthalion and one of the staunchest supporters of [[Mardil]]’s rule as Steward.  His voice is heard in the Council of Lords above that of Rhunaglos.  Much is done to sew Carmayar bitterness to their cousins in this time. 

;[[Cirbandil]] (2101 – 2146)
:Ten and fourth lord Cuthalion, he is said to have journeyed far up the coasts of Middle-Earth and becomes an elf-friend in Mithlond, only sets foot in Gondor late in his life.

;[[Heledir]] (2146 – 2180)
:Ten and fifth lord of Cuthalion, he is called half-elven because it is believed he is the son of Cirbandil and an elf-woman.  He is brought to Gondor at a mature age and returns north after a conflict with the Carmayar.

;[[Rosshir]] (2180 – 2209)
:Sixteenth lord of Cuthalion, he takes Arthaun as hostage after having slain Damrud in battle. He is cursed and dies in a ship-wreck along with his wife, heir and daughters.  He is the last of the sea-lords. 

;[[Firithil]] (2209 – 2242)
:Seventeenth lord Cuthalion and the son of [[Goresgal]], Rosshir’s brother.  He befriends [[Arthaun]] and is known for his prowess with the Longbow. They often go hunting. Sons: [[Penghul]], [[Nonduil]], [[Garion]].

;[[Penghul]] (2242 – 2290)
:Eighteenth lord Cuthalion blames the Carmayar for the evil that plagues his lands.  Penghul’s heir dies during a skirmish.  Full-scale conflict is avoided through the intervention of Firithil, then very old.

;[[Raindir]] (2290 – 2343)
:Nineteenth lord Cuthalion blaming the Carmayar for the death of his elder brother, Raindir must also deal with the incursions on his land. Cousins: [[Thrarandil]]

;[[Naurlam]] (2343 – 2365+)
:Twentieth lord Cuthalion dies in a skirmish against an uprising of Southron lords.  It is said he is trampled by a mumakil set loose by the enemy.

;[[Carfalf]] (2365 – 2420)
:Twenty first lord Cuthalion avenges his father in a long and bloody campaign in the South beyond the River Harnen.  The coffers of House Cuthalion are filled the plunder of the conquered southrons.

;[[Aurlost]] (2420 – 2483)
:Twenty second lord Cuthalion his time is plagued by ill-health and several Southron uprisings.  His sons win peace with their valor on the field and wise council.

;[[Culassadil]] (2483 – 2585)
:Twenty third lord Cuthalion leads a united force of House Mormegil against the Balchoth in Rohan, while Imladech is engaged in the Quest for the Sword of Telchar.  All of his sons die. 

;[[Vorodacil I]] (2585 – 2596+)
:Twenty fourth lord Cuthalion son of Culassadil’s brother Anborn.  Dies in the invasion of Minas Morgul along with his eldest son and many of the younger sons of the Cuthalion line. 

;[[Mithamrun]] (2596 – 2633)
:Twenty sixth lord Cuthalion one of the only merchant lords of Mormegil.  It is said he pacifies the Haradrim with trade.

;[[Mithfaroth]] (2633 – 2674)
:Twenty seventh lord Cuthalion continues his father’s policies, but his wife, Vardaniel, is from the Girithlin line and their son is often possessed of a war-like spirit.  Much of his son’s actions cause enmity with the Haradrim, he also engages in several quests during his life.

;[[Brunorhir]] (2674 – 2703)
:Twenty eighth lord Cuthalion, one of the heros joining Mudoben in the Quest of Amlugdol.  He takes possession of the horn, Amlugdol.  Made a Swan-Knight of Dol Amroth.

;[[Vorodacil II]] (2703 – 2758+)
:Twenty ninth lord Cuthalion, he dies defending the Coasts against the Raids of Corsairs.  

;[[Seindil]] (2758 – 2784)
:Thirtieth lord Cuthalion, he joins the reduced strength of Cuthalion to the forces of Beren, Captain of Gondor, in aid to Rohan.  In that campaign the bows of House Mormegil win great renown.  Seindil is thought to be the greatest bowman in Gondor.

;[[Norion]] (2784 – 2830)
:Thirty first lord Cuthalion, reckoned a great captain on sea and land.  He does much to destroy the ships of the Corsairs, but never again does House Mormegil take to the sea as it once did.

;[[Norpinnath]] (2830 – 2904)
:Thirty second lord Cuthalion, is a Captain under Turin II during the battle of the Poros.  The remaining strength of Mormegil is broken in the vanguard of that army.  With them fall the sons of Folcwine. Sons: Bregil

;[[Bregil]] (2904 – 2969)
:Thirty third lord Cuthalion, is the first of the Lords in Exile and becomes Ranger of Ithilien under Echthelion II.  He is a friend to Thorongil, they dominate much of the council given to the Steward.  He is considered wise by his peers. Sons: Alandir, Himloth

:Thirty and fourth lord Cuthalion, a figure of little note in the annals of Ithilien.  He held on to his lordship until his dotage in reluctance to hand it down to his son in fear. Sons: Bregedur, Faingil. Daughter: Lalaith

;[[Bregedur]] (3012 - 3028)
:Thirty and fifth lord Cuthalion, a mysterious figure, he is known to have spent many years in hermitage in the Dead Marshes, where it is rumored he spoke to the dead.  It is said his father thought him mad. Many of the Cuthalion believe this also after he cedes lordship to the hated Phallanath. Phallanath passes lordship of Cuthalion to Bregedur’s cousin after elevating himself to Lord Mormegil.

:Thirty and sixth Lord Cuthalion begins his lordship under great controversy as he must pledge his allegiance to the Lord Mormegil, the hated Phallanath. He is made heir after his father, Elsicil, a respected diplomat, declines it.

:Thirty and seventh Lord Cuthalion, a leading figure of resistance to Phallanath's usurpation of the house, he holds a decade long claim to the Lordship before finally obtaining it.
