DESCRIPTION

You look on a lanky young man of perhaps 21 years or so. His complexion is swarthy, and from beneath his helm strays a mass of dark curls that have been gathered back and held at the nape of the neck by a plain leather thong, though some have escaped to frame his face. His features are angular, though still somewhat softened by youth: wide cheekbones and a pointed chin, balanced by a narrow, slightly upcurved nose. His eyes are an unusual shade: a deep, smoky amber.

He is wrapped in a patched and faded dun cloak. Beneath it he is protected by a studded leather jerkin, rather too broad at the shoulder and cinched in at the waist by a wide belt; the jerkin shows signs of patching in several places. A folded piece of leather is stuffed into his waistband, and at his other hip hangs a utilitarian dagger, of bone with a decorative tracery in some blackened substance that, on closer inspection, might be tarnished silver. Around his neck is hung a bear's tooth, worn and polished, threaded on a piece of twine.

COMMON KNOWLEDGE

Common knowledge in Creatrach:

Breveg is the acknowledged, though illegitimate, son of the former Bear Ceann Barseg. He is currently serving in the retinue of Fian Ciaran Ranich.

Common knowledge elsewhere:

A few folk from Kierkgard remember that Brev is the bastard get of that crackpot former Chieftain - the latter never tried to conceal the fact, whilst the former will acknowledge it grudgingly if you ask him ("So what? Not my fault"). Brev has been seen with the rebel Carac, and there seems to be some level of friendship between the pair.

Breveg is a loner, though he has occasionally shown a soft spot for those younger than himself fallen on hard times.

HISTORY

When Marja Telartair, Bear lass turned mercenary, gave birth to a son in the summer of 3025 she would have no talk of a father, and few even bothered to enquire - given the number of men with whom she'd shared her bed, many figured she didn't know. Raised by his mother, young Breveg may have learned early the meaning of the word 'bastard', but he also learned that Mama was the centre of the World. Five short years later that all changed - a Dunlending trading trip to Bree left Marja lost to the Wild and Breveg orphaned. Khidyr and Elrabin (alas for their ill-fated union!) took care of the young orphan at first, then on their return to Dunland another laid claim to the boy, the man Breveg would eventually acknowledge as 'father'. It took another year and a runaway trip to Creatrach to convince Breveg that his mother was truly dead; during that escapade he gained a new friend, Carac.

The years passed, and it would seem that Breveg settled in his new life: he had a caring father, stepmother and half-brother - who could ask for more? Yet beneath the surface resentment slept like a smouldering turf, awaiting the breath of wind to fan it to life. At the age of 12, Breveg was apprenticed to the Bear carpenter Nerec, and left his step-family without a backward glance.

The lad certainly showed some aptitude for the trade - when he put his mind to it. Alas, a scant year later he would lose not only his master but the last vestige of childhood. Nerec and his apprentice were in Mathain when the Keep fell to the goblins, and Breveg was one of the few to escape with his life; the shame of that he still bears. Bitter and self-doubting, the lad did not contact his family, and it was weeks before his distraught father located him in Creatrach - and arranged a new master for him, Fornen of Kierkgard. A year later, Breveg's father simply disappeared ... That autumn Fornen left Kierkgard with a woman of whom he was enamoured. Breveg did not follow. From that point on the youth lived from hand to mouth - sometimes helping out at the blacksmith's, sometimes doing odd jobs, sometimes simply scavenging. Despite the run of harsh winters that plagued Dunland, he not only survived but thrived.

By the time he reached 20, 'Brev' was a self-sufficient and self-serving young man who showed little concern over the corruption and apathy into which Dunland had sunk. However, a chance meeting with an old friend was to change that. For better or worse, Brev threw in his lot with the rebels who brought down the Guardians and razed Kierkgard. Since then Brev has served Carac - sometimes openly, at other times as eyes and ears in places where the rebellion's figurehead could not go.
