Dol Amroth: Prince\'s Castle - Grand Hall of the Stars

If the eyes of Men are drawn to the heavens, then let them look here into the breathtaking heights and be never dismayed the great dome of the Grand Hall rises far above the earth in all its splendour. Galleries ring the rotunda at every level, and the majesty that is the birthright of Numenor\'s descendants has its heart here, in the vastness of this circular, soaring chamber. It is not so much a hall as it is the nave of a cathedral.

The skylight-windows at the dome\'s distant apex allow the natural light of the day into the hall, yet the marble stonework and polished lebethron of this place retain a chill, untouchable dignity. Grand archways lead east, to the Hall of Armor, and west, ultimately to the throne room, but a man stood at the one side would need shout for his opposite to hear him. A carpeted stair leads upward, and to the galleries that ring the open space high above.

As the dreams of men have often sailed among the stars, this great chamber calls to dreamers and thinkers to pause and wonder. In the daytime, the skylight windows allow light to stream in, and it falls, filtered, to lay on the floor in bright sheets, only to be disturbed by the passing shadow of a very slow moving girl with her nose stuck in a book, one who makes passage through this room a daily event. It is a long way to walk, for this room is so large, and the young lady seems not to mind in the least, occasionally casting her eyes up towards the heavens in appreciation.

From the carpeted stairs comes a man dressed in white. His long raven black hair is tied back into a pony tail, and his attire is that of a White-Squire. Fluttering behind him is a white cloak with a proud looking Ram embroided into the back. Upon spotting the girl walking through the hall he shouts out \"Lady Meneliel!\" and runs towards her.

Beneath the warm glow of a lantern a squire is quietly reading, every so often looking up to the skylights with an angry glare. His hair hangs limply across his face, and in one hand he holds a small purple flower, gently twirling it around his fingers.

Coming down the stairs behind the white figure Drenlyn pauses as he stares up at the dome. Smiling he turns his attention back on the hall in front of him, noticing the graceful figure who the white squire calls out to. Sighing Drenlyn reaches the floor of the chamber, walking calmly towards the figure, and bows, \"Good evening dear Meneliel, I hope I find you well, despite the stormy weather that keeps the stars hidden this night.\"

Surprised, Meneliel does what comes naturally, jumping halfway out of her skin and dropping her book with a thud against the floors, having it fall just beyond the hemline of her skirts. At the sound of her name, she turns her head and furrows her brows peering at those who approach her, and almost absently drops a half-curtsey of greeting to the two squires. \"Good evening,\" she replies to Drenlyn, not sure what to say to Falathel. \"Is... is something wrong?\" With an owlish blink, she looks from one to the other.

Falathel laughs \"Not that I know of lady. I, for one, am just happy to see you again.\"

Startled by the echoing thud of Meneliel\'s book, Morrandir looks up at the trio. Seeing that all is well he continues to read.

Drenlyn bows again, and in a swift motion picks up the book and begins to hand it back, \"Pardon us my lady for we seem to have startled you indeed. With me nothing is wrong, but I....,\" pausing to glance quickly at Falathel, \"...and others, have been seeking you of late. I only hope that we did not give you too much of a fright this night.\"

Falathel blushes lightly and looks around the hall, seeing Morrandir he smiles and calls out \"Come join us, my friend.\"

Meneliel blinks owlishly at Falathel again, in a momentary confusion. \"Oh. Of course. It is good to see you again, too, Falathel,\" she offers politely, then looks over to Drenlyn and takes her book back with a bit of a blushing smile. \"It is good that nothing is wrong, and you have not frightened me terribly... but I am confused. I have not left Dol Amroth. Why am I sought?\"

Morrandir looks up to Falathel and smiles. \"If you insist.\" he says with a grin. He closes his book and walks toward them.

Falathel seems to ignore Meneliel\'s questions with a blush and asks Morrandir \"How are you today?\"

\"I am well. And you? How are you enjoying your new life as a squire?\" he says, glancing at Meneliel out of the corner of his eye.

Blushing a little Drenlyn turns away from Meneliel, and smiles as Morrandir approaches, \"And to you my bruised friend, I hope that we have not disturbed your pleasant reading.\"

Returning his gaze to Meneliel Drenlyn blushes, ever so faintly, as he smiles, \"I have sought you only for company and to learn more of the stars that I studied as a child. For I do not doubt that your knowledge of them outmatches mine.\"

Falathel says, \"It is not all that much different...\"

\"Nay,\" Morrandir replies, smiling at Drenlyn. \"Really, Falathel?\" he says, once more turning his attention to the white squire. \"Just wait until you have to clean out the stables.\"

Falathel laughs and says \"If I remember correctly, we shall both be doing that!\"

Morrandir nods saying \"Aye, but how much experience have you had clearing out horse-muck?\"

Falathel smiles \"None so far.\"

Morrandir laughs. \"Well back in my apprentice blacksmith days it seemed to be all I ever did. Cleaning up after the horses while my master shod them.\"

Knowing nothing about cleaning out stables and being a bit shy of horses, Meneliel casts a somewhat wary glance to Morrandir and Falathel before returning her attention to Drenlyn. \"It is good to hear that I am not sought to be told bad news or the like. I will teach you, as you like. I am sure the stars are just coming out now,\" she offers mildly.

Falathel smiles to Morrandir \"So how are your wounds coming along?\" However his gaze seems distracted to Meneliel as she speaks.

Noticing Meneliel\'s glance, Morrandir turns to her and gives a slight bow. \"Where are my manners?\" he exclaims. \"Good evening Lady, I trust that you are well?\"

Laughing gently Drenlyn turns to Falathel, \"I have shamefully yet congratulated you on attaining your post sir squire, but I do indeed hope that both you and Morrandir will enjoy the cleaning, for I will be there as well, tending the knight\'s horses.\"

Drenlyn returns his kind gaze back to Meneliel smiling all the while, \"It is most certainly well that no ill news befalls us this night,\" casting a doubtful look upwards Drenlyn continues, \"but I fear that your teaching will have to wait for another night for the wind howls in the sky, and the clouds of rain shield those beautiful orbs from our view.\"

\"Ah, greetings to you as well, Morrandir,\" replies Meneliel, nodding a bit shyly, looking about at the three as they surround her. Somewhat nervously, she begins to turn her book over and over again in her hands, smiling politely at each in turn. \"So we shall have to wait for another night. Let us be glad that it is dry and quiet here,\" she notes to Drenlyn.

Smiling, Drenlyn nods to Falathel, but turns to Meneliel, \"Thanks are in order for the pleasantness of this room, but as to the peace, I believe we have disturbed whatever peace remained here.\"

Eyeing Meneliel\'s book carefully Drenlyn asks, \"Pardon my curiosity dear Meneliel, but I was wondering as to what book you were reading when we interrupted you? I have scoured the books of the library here in the castle, and have yet to see one such as yours.\"

Morrandir looks up to the ceiling. \"Curse this rain.\" he mutters. \"I can think of nothing better than sitting out in the gardens in the evening beneath the stars. And here I am trapped inside.\"

Practically clinging to her little book, Meneliel smiles slightly at Drenlyn. \"It is a little book to record my observations on. I write in pencil and keep notes of what I see in the sky every night,\" she notes, almost nervously, fidgeting one foot over the other. She glances over at Morrandir and smiles again. \"Oh, that is where I would be, were it clear...\"

Nodding at the white squire\'s comment Drenlyn retorts, \"That would be great pleasure indeed, but an even greater pleasure would be to lay on the deck of a galley, listening to the wind blow gently at the sails, as I studied the paths of the stars.\"

Gazing at Meneliel, Drenlyn continues, \"But I have often wished for such a book as yours my lady, for I have always wanted to trace the paths of stars through the seasons, for they are very different in the heat of summer, than in the dead of the winter snows.\"

Morrandir nods to Meneliel. \"Yes, the gardens use far more beautiful at nighttime -Elbereth and Kementari hand in hand...\"

\"Ah, but the patterns do repeat, from year to year, with slight variations, of course. Some move on their own, of course, but most follow the same circuit, each taking turns to be central. The summer stars and the winter stars never meet, though,\" notes Meneliel mildly. \"And some stars are visible year round. This is why we can use them to navigate, of course.\"

Pausing for a moment, the young lady looks over at Morrandir and blinks slowly. \"I don\'t know... I like the gardens during the day. They are busier, with birds and insects and lizards, and with the flowers showing their bright faces.\" She tucks her hands with her book behind her back, trying to be comfortable.

\"Full of life you mean. I prefer the stillness of night, the silence, all is so still and calm.\" says Morrandir thoughtfully, staring up to the ceiling. \"However each to their own.\" he adds quickly with a slight smile, as though coming out of a daze.

Smiling Drenlyn replies, \"I have noticed these circuits that you speak of, but have never had the time to study them so. As to the stars of navigation, it is well that they stay out throughout the seasons for many a captain would be lost without them.\"

Letting out a pleasant sigh, Drenlyn\'s face saddens, \"The gardens were my refuge for some time here in the castle, but alas they are now shrouded in evil and unpleasant memories for me. Yet their beauty and vibrance of life, calls me back more often than not, as do the stars. I have found my paradise here, for I can have beauty both day and night...\"Saying this Drenlyn glances quickly to Meneliel, but then quickly turns his face skyward.

Taking a moment to tuck her book into a nearly invisible pocket in her dress, secreting it away close to her hit, Meneliel allows herself to brush the front of her dress neat, allows herself to fix her hair behind her ear. A slow inhalation, and she glances around, still slightly overwhelmed by the attentions of the three young men. \"Yes, full of life,\" she agrees after a moment. \"I am fascinated by both the life of the gardens and the cold movements of stars.\"

\"I can\'t say life holds much fascination for me...\" mutters Morrandir in a barely audible tone, still gazing upwards.

Gazing back down to Meneliel Drenlyn smiles, \"Both are filled with beauty and I find myself attracted to both.\" A blush draws on Drenlyn\'s face as he stares at Meneliel, \"I have enjoyed our meeting this night my lady, and I hope that we could meet again on some clear night, or on a bright day. I fear though, that I must depart for now, for I have duties to attend to in the stables come morning, and I can not be late.\" Smiling Drenlyn bows to Meneliel, and then nods to Morrandir.

Morrandir nods to Drenlyn. \"I shall see you in the stables then.\" he says with a wry grin.

\"Oh,\" replies Meneliel mildly to Drenlyn. \"I bid you a good evening, then, and do offer my greetings to my cousin if your paths do cross.\" She smiles at Drenlyn, arching her brows hopefully.

\"I will do so my lady, for our paths should cross many times before my duties are done. But alas I must depart, for sleep calls hither those who wake much before the sun rises.\" With that Drenlyn bows one more time, smiling at Meneliel all the while, and departs through the archway.

Falathel smiles and looks up to Meneliel \"So, you mentioned once before that you have travelled all throughout Gondor.. Where all have you been?\"

Meneliel considers this question a moment. \"Why, I have been to a number of small towns, but no where terribly impressive. Minas Tirath, of course, and here, in Dol Amroth, and I have passed through some other places,\" she notes, shrugging slightly.

Falathel smiles and nods.

\"Minas Tirith...\" mutters Morrandir. \"I attended university there. That was where I met...\" he stops, and is silent. He quickly opens his book at a random page and begins to read.

Falathel looks over to Morrandir and asks \"Well, my friend, what are you reading?\"

Meneliel purses her lips at Morrandir. \"What are you reading now?\" she wonders, knowing better than to ask about whoever it is he might have met, sensing tension.

\"Poetry.\" he says quickly, not looking up.

\"What sort?\" wonders the lady hopefully.
