Houses of Healing
You enter a large room with a high ceiling and far apart walls. Lined against the walls are beds lined row upon row filled with countless patients. Nurses move around checking each patient in a busy fashion creating the seemling chaotic scene. Yet out of the madness comes a singular efficency which cannot be matched throughout the land. This room is the largest one dedicated to healing in all of the known Middle Earth and each nurse or healer will tell you that proudly. On the far side of the room lay large windows looking out upon the farmlands and roads surrounding the city. Hope, instead of dispair, grows within you.

You step into a passage way with dully polished walls on either side. The lighting is quite bright and this combined with the lack of objects makes the room seem like a much larger place then it actually is. Nurses stream back and forth and from room to room tending to the injured and sick. This is a very busy corridor and thus is almost always busier then the usually slow sixth tier.

With the sun intermittentedly peeking from behind the grey clouds many lanterns are ablaze inside the House of Healing. Few beds are filled as most of those soliders injured in Osgiliath have returned to active duty. One cranky young soldier remains and is heard complaining to the healer as she changes his dressing. A few words are exchanged between the two and finally the young healer throws down the tin of salve and stomps from the room.
Seated at the mahoghany desk, Lady Aearwen is aware of the exchange between the two and is slightly amused as she looks up at both. The young lad looking crestfallen and angry as he looks through the door from whence the lady disappeared. Her laughter rings out as she then says, \"Ran her away again today did you? That is no way to win the ladies heart solider\"
[Dathgar(#19765)] Today is a day much like many others in Gondor. The city is bustling with people, the guards are posted dutifully at their posts, however, there exists an entity, though not foreign to this city, that pierces the routines of many Gondorians today. Twisting and turning through the streets of the city rides a coach, seemingly out of control. As it barrels through the streets it leaves a small wake of startled people in its path as it continues at its dizzying pace towards its unknown destination.
However, as this wild coach approaches the House of Healing, it slows, and stops. The door to the coach flies open and a soot covered man emerges from its depths leaping off the coach and dashing in full sprint towards the house holding his left hand with his right. The pitter patter of leather shoes echo through the halls. In the entryway to the West Wing, there appears a man, a blacksmith, Dathgar, jaw clenched, left hand covered with a dirty wet rag. Wild eyed, he briefly glances around the room until he sees Aearwen sitting at her desk. As he runs up to her, he pants, \"You.... have to.... help me...\"
Rising from her desk at the commotion in the hallway, Lady Aearwen rushes forth when she recognizes the blacksmith. Calling out sharply to the other healers she says, \"Warm water and fresh supplies. Hurry!\" Gently taking the hand wrapped in the dirty wet rag she speaks very softly to the man, her words soothing and calm as she points to a nearby chair, \"Come Dathgar. Sit in this chair and tell me what has happened to you.\" Calling to her assistant she says, \"Please bring an infusion of chamomile with a touch of yarrow added to it.\"
[Dathgar(#19765)] Dathgar is eased into the chair, still panting, and says, \"Working...metal...not...hand...OUTCH!!\" He screams as the rags are removed from his wounded, burnt, and slowly blistering hand. \"Hand...hand...hot metal...\" He makes a ssss sound through his teeth as he inhales sharply and pain slowly creeps up his arm..
Wincing as the rags are slowly unwound and the angry red wounds to the hand are exposed to view, Aearwen speaks softly still, \'Be as still as you can Dathgar and let me take a look.\", bending her auburn head closer to that of the blacksmith her eyes quickly rove over the hand, gently turning it over to look at both sides.\" Calmly inquiring, \"There were no small slivers of metal in what you were working, correct?\" Nodding her head to the assistant as the requested items are placed on the table beside the chair.
Folding up the sleeves of her gown, Aearwen says calmly, \'I am going to soak your hand in this mixture of chamomile and yarrow. This will reduce the blistering and ease the pain in the burned areas\"
[Dathgar(#19765)]Taking a deep breath, Dathgar says, \"....no...\" As his hand breaks the tention of the mixture, more sharp pain wreaks his body, however, after a couple of seconds, the pain begins to subside and he can breath a bit easier.
Gently and as slowly as possible, Aearwen eases the hand into the cool water her own face tense as she hears the sharp intake of breath from the man. Reaching for a white linen cloth she dips it in the water and squeezes it, allowing the soothing infusion to trickly over the bit of hand that is exposed. Time after time she repeats that process all the while talking to Dathgar, trying to keep his mind off of his pain.
\"The blacksmith job must be keeping you quite busy young man. I dare say that it has been since we were in Rohan since I last laid eyes upon you.\", a smile is flashed as she looks into the face of the man to guage his pain level. The flashing of a ruby stone on the silver ring upon her face glints in the light of the lantern sitting on the table.
[Dathgar(#19765)] Exhaling lightly as the pain begins to subside, Dathgar says, \"Yes.... we seem to only see each other in times.... of pain..\" He looks at her and flashes his best attempt at a smile under the circumstances and winds up looking like a half drunken guard grinning out of the side of his mouth, \"...or, to rephrase.... of my pain..\"
Touched by the bravery of the young man, Aearwen smiles gently and says, \"Shush now, that is what I am here for. But I must admit that it would be nice to see you -not- in some kind of pain or injured.\" The cool bathing continues of the injured hand as the healer talks to her friend as the ruby again flashes in the light she inquires, \"Did you hear that Melethron was back from the dead?\"
One finger lightly touches the reddened skin above his knuckle and the skin whitens for only a second before it again turns to an angry crimson colour. Silent for a moment she asks, \'How is the pain now? I do not want to give the blistered skin time to fill up with the water from this infusion. Do you think you can stand removing it and allowing me to rub a cooling salve over it?\"
[Dathgar(#19765)] Sighing gently, Dathgar removes his hand from the mixture. \"Back from the dead? Really! I had not heard...\" Turning his hand slightly to view it he says, \"Yes, I think you could rub a salve on it... the pain can\'t be worse then it was before..\"
Chuckling softly the healer adds, \"I do hope you dont mind smelling like marigold for awhile. We blend it into the salve to help with the healing and to remove some of the stench.\" Grinning impishly as she picks up a tin and pops open the lid, the pleasant spicy aroma of marigold quickly filling the air.
Two fingers dip liberally into the yellow salve and gently resting Dathgar\'s hand atop her left, Aearwen applies the salve, thickly coating the burned areas. Dipping repeatedly into the salve as she works the salve in between his fingers and into the sensitive cuticles around each nail. Quietly she says, \"Has the pain eased enough that the palm can be touched?\"
[Dathgar(#19765)] Sighing lightly as the salve is applied, Dathgar replies, \"Yes.. I believe it has... but be gentle!\" Looking down at her hand, he noticed her ruby ring for the first time... \"Ooh, and what have we here? A new ring? Very lovely...\"
Soft fingers ease carefully across the burned palm of Dathgar as Aearwen applies the soothing balm. A gentle flush of crimson floods across her cheeks as her eyes look to the ring with a sweet smile, \'Thank you very much. And yes, it is a new ring, a family heirloom of House Bragollach.\"
Strips of white linen cloth are wound around the hand, completely covering the injured area as Aearwen admits, \"For a year I grieved Melethron\'s demise in Pelargir only to discover some months ago that he had been a prisoner and slave.\" Shaking her head softly she says, \"He barely looked like his former self when he stumbled back into Minas Tirith, I hardly recognized him. Truthfully, I thought it a cruel figament of my imagination.\" Again the colour floods to her face as she admits, \"We are now promised.\"
[Dathgar(#19765)]
Dathgar\'s mouth opens and closes again after a couple of seconds. \"Really! Congradulations!\" He looks down at his bandaged hand. \"Anything I should know about this? As in, when can this be removed?\"
A smile that can best be described as content is given to Dathgar as Aearwen raises cerulean blue eyes to his and says, \"Thank you. That means a lot coming from an old friend. I shall miss being here in the House of Healing, but yet, I long home. The sweet salty air coming in from the Bay of Belfalas. Melethron and I shall be returning to Dol Amroth as soon as he is well enough to make the trip.\" A thoughtful look is given as she says, \"Will you promise not to do anything with this hand for three days? \"
.
[Dathgar(#19765)] Astonished, Dathgar says/shouts, \"Three days! But... my work! I was making a new helm... in a new design i created... Three days!\" The song of birds can be heard in the distance.
Giving the young man her -best- stern look, Aearwen nods solemnly, \"Yes. Three full days of allowing that salve to heal those blisters. Otherwise, the flesh may become festered and then leeches applied and possibly amputation?\" One hand goes to a shapely hip as she asks patiently, \"Is that too much to ask considering the alternatives?\"
[Dathgar(#19765)] Once again drawing a long deep sigh, Dathgar replies, \"No, I guess not... but.... oh well... i guess my work can wait..\"
Smiling brightly Aearwen gently lays her hand upon his shoulder, \"Perhaps while you are taking a -break- from your work we can meet for tea?\" A laugh sounds as she says, \"Granted, that will not put copper in your pockets but perhaps it will take your mind off your misfortune. \" Cocking her head to one side she inquires, \"Do you have any apprentices working with you that can carry on with your guidance?\"
[Dathgar(#19765)] Dathgar slowly stands from the chair. \"Aye, I have apprentices... but I\'m sorry m\'lady, I will have to take you up on your offer for tea at a later date... I must go back and tend to the fires of the smithy.. Thank you, though..\"
A smile is given to the man as he stands from the chair, but the words of Aearwen are serious as she says, \"I will have one of my assistants come around to the blacksmith shop on the morrow to check out your hand. If you notice any swelling, oozing of clear liquid or even worse, a stench, please come back to the House of Healing immediately. I have no wish to remove your hand.\" Take care now Dathgar and it has been a pleasure to see you again, even under such circumstances.\"
