Brev
Name:
Brev Telartair, also known as Bruni Marjasson (and various unsavory epithets!)
Title:
Sawbones of the Underdecks Infirmary, Journeyman of the Carpenters Guild; Lord of Taurdain
Description:
You look on a lanky fellow of perhaps thirty-odd summers or so with a lithe, slender frame. His complexion is swarthy, and his head is topped by a mass of dark curls that have been gathered back and held at the nape of the neck by a plain leather thong, though some have escaped to frame his face. His features are angular: wide cheekbones and a pointed chin, more often than not shadowed by a few days worth of stubble, are balanced by a narrow, slightly upcurved nose. His eyes are an unusual shade: a deep, smoky amber.
He is wrapped in a hooded cloak the pale grey of granite in hue, pinned at the shoulder by an oval brooch of bronze: this bears the outline of a beech tree in the midst of a lake, with the horns of the crescent moon above. His body is protected by a studded leather jerkin, its hue darkened to near-black from weather and stains but clearly in good condition and a comfortable fit to his lean frame. A folded piece of leather is stuffed into his waistband, and at his other hip hangs a utilitarian dagger, its hilt of bone with a decorative tracery in some blackened substance that, on closer inspection, might be tarnished silver. Around his neck is hung a bear's tooth, worn and polished, threaded on a piece of twine.
History:
The fellow calling himself Bruni Marjasson arrived in Esgaroth near the end of 3051, with a young (some might say indecently so!) wife and young friend in tow. He spent a couple of years hanging round town trying to pick up carpentry work and when that proved thin on the ground (didn't he know we're up to our ears in carpenters round here?) he was also seen in the Underdecks from time to time - he even got involved in that Flagon lass's Infirmary project down there. Claimed to be handy with a knife or some such nonsense.
Then when war broke out in Buhr Marling in 3053 he got himself tangled up in that. Turned out the man was no stranger to either battlefield surgery or fighting - in fact the tale goes the foreigner was quite the hero and saved Lord Girion's life, though he denies it when asked. When he returned, folk were calling him by a different name - Brev - and not long after that, he became one of Lord Lorthrain's new recruits to the poorly performing Esgaroth Watch. That didn't last long; a few months later he was out on his ear and seemed to take a perverse delight in evading any responsibility, scraping a living from carpentry and that barbaric doctoring of his.
Over the next few years, however, he built up something of a reputation, both as a journeyman of the Carpenter's Guild (he receives regular commissions from the Noble Houses) and as acting manager of the Underdecks Infirmary. His personal life was rather more murky: his young wife left him for another man and speculation as to why is rife. Still, these things blow over in time. Towards the end of 3057 he was offered a place as a retainer of Taurdain, perhaps owing to his work on an Underdecks crafts training project. Not long after this he and the noblewoman Isobel of Taurdain were betrothed, and they were wed the following autumn; one suspects she had a hand in his retainership. The couple have one child: a daughter, Dara, born in October 3059.
Quite where Brev or Bruni hails from most folk have no idea, for he tends to be evasive, coming up with vague answers like 'across the Mountains'. Reckon there's something in his past he's trying to hide?
