Ill-gotten gains?

Nobles can be funny sorts sometimes.

The other evening, just as it was getting to dusk, I saw BREV - well, Lord Brev they call him now - slinking toward the Taurdain Suites with a dead rabbit in one hand that he looked to be trying to conceal. Why anyone would want to hide a potential dinner is beyond me ... hmm. You don't think he'd been poaching?

Then Lady ORIANA appeared and she had something in her hands too. It was a little box, about yon size, but I couldn't figure out for the life of me what was in it, though she must have told Brev, for I saw the man looking. They were too far away for me to hear any conversation, more's the pity.

Next thing Oriana was whisked into the Suites and Brev went over to talk to some skulking fellow (GIDON) who had been spying on them from the shadows. I couldn't swear if anything changed hands, but it all looked mighty fishy. If you ask me, some of our oh-so-noble nobles are engaged in illicit business ...

News has reached Esgaroth of the death of the High Warden, RIORDAN Karath. The exact manner of his end is not known: some say that his health failed him, others blame bandits for his demise, whilst some unkind gossips whisper that his horse kicked him so violently that his skull stove in. Surely such tales cannot hold even a grain of truth?

In any case, the Warden's memory was honoured at a ceremony by the Lakeside. Many came to keep vigil by the funeral pyre lit by the deceased's only son and heir, RIOLAN (Isobel) - amongst them Wardens, representatives of all four Houses and a scattering of commoners. It was remarked that Lady ISOBEL Taurdain was particularly red-eyed, though her husband BREV appeared rather more stoic. Riolan was too grief-stricken to offer more than a few words; even the flask gifted by THORALD did not loosen his tongue. Still, youth is reslient. And they do say that with the fortune left to him he's now quite the catch ...

Two ladies of noble birth met in the Karath Manor lobby the other day and their excited discussion - of frivulous things, I assure you! - drew the attention of Lady ORIANA who was, as always, trying to work. So out she came and chased off the silly women, one of whom had an escort even - her noble brother THORALD. Or shall we say Lord Thorald although he does not think the title quite fits him? So the ladies retreated to a quieter area and Oriana was sentenced to keeping the Karath soldier, watchman and former Royal Warden company.

It did not seem difficult for the two to strike conversation, an amusing one, too since the lady did laugh! I heard that's not a very common thing these days but what do I know? While he was telling her a rather unsuitable story about Lady Marwen of Karath -- currently of Girion --, in came Lady ISOBEL of Taurdain with her hands so cold that Oriana had to rush over and warm them for the dainty flower.

As she found herself in a bit of a pickle since she had promised the Lordling to keep him company but ah but she had not spoken to her friend for so long..., Lady Oriana introduced the two and really, the man wasn't as intolerable as he usually is. Maybe there is something about Isobel that makes men behave? Hmm, mark that down for later research! Anyway, where was I? Ah yes, the whole meeting was cut short however by a scared servant running downstairs and telling Oriana something about her mother, to which she fled the scene. Not sure about Lady Isobel but I'm sure I saw Thorald gloomily staring at the tapestry an hour later until at last his sister returned and the two departed.

This has been yet another fascinating report by Cer, especially for DLNN. And now back to the weather...

Ya know that market square can be a busy place. Full of them wierdo's too. Like BREV. Strange man he is. He was lookin' 'round for somethin'. Didn' know what mind ya, wonderin' how he ever got a noble sorta name tied to him! Sulkin' 'round like that!

But that lady ORIANA, now there be a woman who can turn a head but also smack it off! Don' trust me a woman that can handle a sword better than a man can, that ain't right! But kids seem ta like her! Confusin' if you ask me. That Taurdain child, that belongs to that Brev was with her. Watched how she smashed food in that Karath's hair and made her trip a brewer too! Funny bit of work there if you ask me, hurt my sides seein' them nobles all tied up in knots, fussin' over a dirty dress and hair. Ha! Who needs a bath anyway.

Not all to sure what the two said, I was busy getting me some free ale that was left in that barrel that was dropped that soaked the woman. Seems Brev was mad at his kid for somethin', maybe for talkin' to the lady Steward. Either way, the father daughter duo left in none to happy a state, same with the lady. Busy day for them noble types huh. Having to wash their hair and clothes. Might just interupt their knitting and bathing!

Did you see that young Lordling walking round town with Lady ORIANA of Karath the other day? Well, of course you did, you're not blind. Any woman would have noticed a well-favoured fellow like him - though my man Tam says he didn't see what all the fuss was about. Menfolk, eh?

Anyway, I saw the visitor and Oriana on Esgaroth Bridge saying their farewells. BREV of Taurdain (and I don't see why we should call /him/ Lord just because he married up in the world!) might be able to tell you something of the fellow's name and errand, as he was there too and the three of them exchanged a few words. The visiting Lordling looked reluctant to leave, if you ask me.

Gareth and Medson, who were on town gate duty, reckoned they knew the fellow's errand, for the pair of them set up a wager as to whether he would kiss Oriana. They should have known better! Next thing, Oriana (who'd seen off her visitor without so much as a peck on the cheek!) marched up demanding the coin. I'm telling you, it's a wonder they didn't lose their jobs. She was /not/ happy.
