Life
Early life
In the twentieth year of the Sun, the year of the Mereth Aderthad, Thileithel, which is 'Well of Shining Silver Light' in Sindarin, was born under the eaves of Neldoreth in Doriath. Long he dwelt there with his mother and father, Idhreniel and Durhael. As the young Elf grew, Durhael taught his son many things of the woods and of fighting, skills that would serve Thileithel well. As he approached his one hundredth year, Thileithel entered the service of the King, serving as a March-warden under the mighty Beleg Strongbow.
Marriage
In 490, Thileithel returned to Menegroth to marry a lady in the household of Melian. Nenduien, an Elf-maiden of deep blue-grey eyes and rich blond hair, had enchanted him long before when he had first seen her beneath the beeches of his home. They laughed and played under the trees of the forest, wandering wherever their feet took them, until messengers came seeking Thileithel, recalling him to the marches. Nenduien returned to Menegroth and the Court.
Sack of Doriath
Thileithel was one of the companions of Mablung in both his expeditions in search of Morwen and Nienor, and on the second trip witnessed the end of the Children of Hurin. Turin had been a comrade in arms during his time in Doriath, and Thileithel grieved with his captain as they made their way home. The next two years swiftly passed and with them went Thingol, slain by the Dwarves in the smithies of Menegroth. Melian soon departed, and Thileithel took his wife to live with his parents in their home deep in the recesses of Neldoreth. Soon thereafter, Dior arrived and took up the Kingship. When Eluchil married, Nenduien returned to the Thousand Caves to serve Nimloth the new Queen. There she would stay.
Thileithel's oath
The sons of Feanor attacked deep in the winter, killing those they could find in Menegroth. Yet Elwing escaped with those that could. The remnant of Doriath fled to the Havens of Sirion. Thileithel was on the borders at the time of the attack and returned to Menegroth too late, except to help guide the survivors south. Seeking his wife among the refugees, he found her not, and daring to return to Doriath in the dead of winter, he sought for her in the forests of his home. Entering the deep halls of the Thousand Caves, now darkened, He found in a small chamber his wife, an arrow protruding from her cold body, a broken sword in her hand. Thileithel sat with his beloved wife during the night, and then buried her before the gates as the pale light of the sun shone in the east. In that pale light, he drew his sword Angthilel and saluted the dawn, vowing to revenge himself upon the Noldor and their pride.
Havens of Sirion
He returned swiftly to Sirion to serve Elwing, living with his parents and younger sister, all having fled south with their lady. Soon after, the survivors of Gondolin arrived from the north, and Thileithel set aside his vow for awhile, instead biding his time in case he should come upon the sons of Feanor. His chance soon came, for Maedhros came with his brothers to take the Silmaril from Elwing. The March-warden fought valiantly, but Elwing was lost, as were her sons. He and his family joined Cirdan and Gil-galad on Balar, and afterwards went with them and the remaining Sindar to Lindon after Morgoth's overthrow.
Second Age
Unlike many of his kin from Doriath who went east to dwell among the Silvan, Thileithel remained in Lindon by the Sea. For many years he lived in peace in that fair land, recording much that he knew of the history of Doriath, and occasionally wandering into Eriador.
When Thileithel was still in Doriath, he made the acquaintance of the young heir of Nos Meril, Talroch. Later, after Talroch came into his inheritance as Lord of Narthanaer after the death of his father during the escape from Doriath, he asked Thileithel to serve him as his herald, and Thileithel accepted.
Travels
During the first half of the Second Age, Thileithel would often leave Lindon and travel alone. Journeying as far east as the plains around the Sea of Rhun and as far south as the mouths of Anduin, Thileithel saw much of the Westlands. It was during this time that he was first called Randir, or 'Wanderer', a name bestowed upon those few who felt the urge leave their homes to see the wider world.
War of the Elves and Sauron
The years passed, and when Sauron rose again, Thileithel answered the call of Gil-galad and Elrond. Yet he was wary of such an expedition to Eregion, but went out of loyalty to Elrond, the son of his lady Elwing. Thileithel felt that the Noldor's conflict with Sauron was yet another example of their pride at work and that their destruction would suit him just fine. Elrond's forces marched to Eregion, but Sauron's forces proved too great, and all they could do was escort the remains of the Noldor north to Imladris. During that time, Thileithel saw firsthand the valor of the Noldor in battle, and he made many friends among them. After the intervention of Numenor and the defeat of Sauron, Thileithel settled in the Valley, putting his vow to rest.
Last Alliance of Elves and Men
It was from the Valley that Thileithel marched with the Last Alliance to Mordor. Through the protracted battle of Dagorlad through the seemingly endless Siege, Thileithel fought in the ranks of Gil-galad's armies under his lord. It was during that time, when on leave from the horrors of Mordor, that Thileithel visited Gondor, the only other time since his journeys there in the early Second Age that he has visited the Southern Realm.
Third Age
After the war, Thileithel returned to Imladris with Lord Talroch and Elrond. Remaining in the Tirith, Thileithel worked to pass along his considerable skills to younger Elves, the children of the Third Age who never knew a High King or great wars. For the most part forsaking his Randir ways, the guard and herald served Lord Narthanaer and Elrond and continues to do so. In the late winter of 3030, Thileithel was promoted to Gweithir, or 'Host Lord', by Master Elrond.
In the year 3031, Thileithel traveled with Arwen Undomiel and her faithful retainers over the Misties in a journey to Lothlorien. East of the High Pass, the company was caught by an army of orcs led by their king, Obdiltokh. The Gweithir met the goblin before the stout line of Elven warriors. Four times did the orc-king attack Thileithel and four times did the hammer blows strike true, laying the Elf low. Yet the Elves were able to retreat safely to the village of the Beornings. There Thileithel recovered, thanks to the minstrations of the healers Elingail, Glasiel and Ailiell.
Once back on his feet, the company of Undomiel continued on its way to Lorien. There they spent the summer; as autumn and the time of departure approached, Glasiel asked her old friend and mentor if he would remain behind to escort her home after she helped in the delivery of her kinswoman Caelwen's child. Thileithel agreed, and thus spent the winter of 3031 in the Golden Wood. When the spring came, the pair, along with Glasiel's kinswoman and her little child and husband and the archer Cyndrial set out for Imladris.
Death
In the spring of 3041 (3042 in Mannish reckoning), Thileithel was out for a lone patrol when he came across a troll along the north branch of the Bruinen. He was brought down by the troll, but saved from being consumed by Landroval the great Eagle. His spirit fled to the Halls of Mandos in the Uttermost West and his body was conveyed back to Imladris.
Temperment
The new Gweithir and long time Arphedor considered himself to be a moderate when it came to relations with Men and Dwarves. He was quick to point out that isolationism was not the answer, but as a veteran of many campaigns, he was also quick to speak up for those who serve under him, so that their lives wouldn't be risked unnecessarily.
Thileithel was known for his knowledge of and taste for the wines of the Valley. Always preferring the reds, and especially culyave, he made a point of occasionally breaking out the bottles of the lesser known varieties for sampling.
Family
His parents remain in Lindon, and he has several nephews, nieces, and cousins of some degree; Thileithel himself is a widower. At leisure, there is usually a smile to greet those around him. When in a thoughtful mood, Thileithel reverts to the archaic Sindarin of Doriath. Rarely does his temper flare, yet it may be seen should he perceive Noldo arrogance (or arrogance of any kind for that matter) in his presence. The old wounds have healed, but they are not forgotten.
