Thingalad Carmayar was born on April 6, 3012 to Dunthir Carmayar (d. 3014) of the line of Mundoben Mormegil Lord Carmayar and Silivrenwen of Anorien. Though the youngest of three, Thingalad was alone most of the time as his brothers were already adults, close to or already married. His father died two years after he was born, leaving the young boy in the hands of his mother.

Boyhood

At a young age, Thingalad was sent off to be fostered in the house of Orchalech, at the time the younger brother of the Lord Carmayar. Living a hard life of strictness meant to prepare him for his station in life, the boy was trained in the martial traditions of the nobility of Gondor to eventually fight against the Nameless Enemy.

In 3027, the lad, now fifteen or so, did not see his mother for quite some time. After a period of almost a year, she appeared and took her son from the house of Orchalech. Thingalad noted that his mother was still the fine, handsome woman she had always been, but the insight of his people showed him that not all was well. Often at home, he would hear bitter words spoken in private by his mother about the Bragollach and especially the one known as Elenur. His mother would not say what wrong had been done to her, but soon she lost her spirited appearance as her bitterness consumed; she died in the late autumn of 3033, seemingly taking her secret with her to the grave.

At this point, Thingalad was fully come to manhood. For long though, he has been held back by his own bitterness at losing his father and then his mother. Thinking some wrong has been done to his family, he has ever sought to find out what wrong had been done to his mother so that he might avenge her.

The Company of Ithilien

During his early manhood, Thingalad served as a man-at-arms. By the summer of 3045, he decided to strike out on a new course and sought to enter the Company of Ithilien and the path of a ranger, a path often traveled by young men of Carmayar and Cuthalion heritage. After training in fieldcraft and the ways of the Garden as Ithilien was called, Thingalad was assigned to Osgiliath.

During his early training and leave spent in Minas Tirith, Thingalad became embroiled with the plight of another scout half his age, young Ceredir, a bastard who claimed that Elenur Bragollach was his father. He also began associating with Lady Morwen, the daughter of the Lord Mormegil, after defending her from the harsh words of another Bragollach, Bor, son of Dauragor.

By early 3046, he had advanced to the rank of master scout and was serving in the ranks of an army sent to aid a crusade fending off Haradrim in Harondor. On the road through Ithilien to Harondor, Thingalad revealed a meeting between he and Elenur to Ceredir and first claimed the young man as his half-brother and revealing the secret of Thingalad's mother Silivrenwen.
