Toby's story, alas, is that of a sunny day that slowly darkens into storm.
Growing up with his twin sister, Tathar, he passed from cheerful baby to gleeful toddler to happy boy, but then the clouds began to gather, ominous and inescapable, overhead. Looking back, (for hindsight is always clearer) one might add lazy and greedy and none to careful with the truth to the list of Toby's attributes. From boyish pranks, he moved to petty thefts and other, minor, infractions. There was the time he warned the town of a gang of thieves who were even then looting every house unlocked, but, ask the thoughtful, where was he in the intervening time?
Things came to a head at last, when Toby's desire out-reached his skill, and he was caught removing a sum of money from a local vendor's shop. The victim, an old friend of the family, came to Toby's father and the boy was given an ultimatum: return the money or face the consequences. That night, Toby ran away. The next day, his sister was also missing. The better part of a year went by before the two were seen in Bree again; Toby with a new hardness in his face and a wary sullen anger burning in his eyes. Since then, he has seemingly settled down. The money was repaid, the lad first took a respectable post in the Pony's stables, and then began hunting and selling what he found.
Still, gossipers will whisper of the company he keeps, and why does he not marry that girl (Lucille Ivybrook)he's living with (and her not even the mother of his two children!) And his boyhood friends shun him.
